One key observation from Commanders' OTAs: Improvement in the secondary
With the conclusion of OTAs and minicamps, the Washington Commanders are on a break until July 22, when training camp begins. We often don't get to see much of the OTA practices because they are closed, but some media members are in attendance and can keep us abreast of what is happening. Recently, The Athletic wrote one key observation for every team, and the Commanders should be excited.
The Commanders' cornerback room has a chance to be much improved. At this time last year, Benjamin St-Juste, Emmanuel Forbes Jr. and Michael Davis were the top outside options. All are justifiably gone, but their woes led to shifting rookie Mike Sainristil from the slot to the boundary and making a trade deadline deal for an injured Marshon Lattimore, who proceeded to struggle in the playoffs. Injuries have haunted Lattimore, but he arrived healthy for minicamp following needed rest. If available weekly, the four-time Pro Bowler and second-round rookie Trey Amos have potential as a viable tag-team against the NFC East's star receivers. Ex-Patriot Jonathan Jones brings quality experience to the mix along with Sainristil, who may shift back to his natural inside role after impressing in his first season. — Ben Standig
The Commanders' defense as a whole wasn't great in 2024, but the secondary was a major problem. Adam Peters recognized that and made moves to right the situation. Trading for Lattimore in the middle of the season may not have done what they hoped at the time, but he is a capable veteran. The time off to rest and heal did him some good, and he will be ready to hit the field this fall.
If Jonathan Jones or Trey Amos can fill in opposite Lattimore, then Joe Whitt will be able to move Mike Sainristil back to the slot where he excels the most. As good as he was on the outside last year, an uncomfortable position for him, imagine what his capabilities will be when he's confident in what he is doing.
Commanders fans should feel relieved at hearing this, and even more excited for what the 2025 season is going to bring. With a new regime and correct adjustments being made, this season is going to be just as exciting as 2024.

NBA rumors: Hornets engaged in trade talks amid Ace Bailey draft dilemma
The post NBA rumors: Hornets engaged in trade talks amid Ace Bailey draft dilemma appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Charlotte Hornets are engaged in trade discussions surrounding the No. 4 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, with several teams eyeing Rutgers guard Ace Bailey, according to ClutchPoints' NBA insider Brett Siegel. Advertisement League sources told Siegel that the Brooklyn Nets, Washington Wizards, and New Orleans Pelicans have shown serious interest in acquiring the pick, anticipating Bailey will be available at No. 4. Brooklyn, in particular, has five first-round selections at its disposal to facilitate a potential deal. 'The Nets, Wizards, and Pelicans are the three teams with serious interest in Bailey, and Brooklyn now has five first-round picks they can use at their disposal in trade talks,' Siegel reported. 'Charlotte's main draft targets — Knueppel, Tre Johnson, and Khaman Maluach — will be available if a trade-down scenario for Jeff Peterson and his front office.' Hornets explore trade-down scenarios as Bailey's stock slips ahead of NBA Draft John Jones-Imagn Images Bailey, an 18-year-old 6-foot-10 guard, averaged 17.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.3 blocks, and one steal per game in his lone season at Rutgers. He shot 46% from the field and 34.6% from three-point range across 30 games. Despite his production, his draft stock has reportedly slid due to canceled workouts and his decision not to meet with certain teams during the pre-draft process. Advertisement Speaking to reporters Wednesday ahead of the draft at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, Bailey said he has gained over 20 pounds of muscle since the end of the college season. He was listed at 210 pounds at Rutgers but weighed in at 203 pounds at the NBA Draft Combine in early May. Charlotte is reportedly considering multiple options with its pick, including trading down to target other prospects. Khaman Maluach and Kon Knueppel, both at Duke, and Texas guard Tre Johnson are viewed as potential fits should the Hornets move back in the draft order. Executive vice president of basketball operations Jeff Peterson is overseeing the Hornets' strategy as the organization continues to build around young cornerstone players. The 2025 NBA Draft begins Wednesday night at 8 p.m. ET at Barclays Center and will be televised on ABC and ESPN. The Hornets hold a key position in shaping the top of the draft, with Bailey's availability potentially triggering a major trade. NBA rumors: Lakers check in with Heat on Andrew Wiggins trade
The post NBA rumors: Lakers check in with Heat on Andrew Wiggins trade appeared first on ClutchPoints. As Miami Heat star Andrew Wiggins has reportedly been made available in trade talks, there is one team that has shown interest in acquiring the former champion with the Golden State Warriors. With the immense rumors about the Lakers and looking to improve, it looks as if the team sees Wiggins as a potential acquisition. Advertisement According to ClutchPoints' Senior Lakers insider Anthony F. Irwin on his show 'Lakers Lounge,' Los Angeles has 'checked' on Wiggins and even has asked Miami 'about what the price would be.' He would go on to say that with the team's ties with Heat president Pat Riley, since he was the head coach of the Lakers from 1981-1990, the franchise is gauging what he saw from Wiggins ever since he was traded to Miami in the Jimmy Butler deal. 'I will say that the Lakers again, because of their relationship with Pat Riley, I would imagine they are very well in tune with what Pat thinks of what he saw from Andrew Wiggins, which I don't think was all that great,' Irwin said. 'I don't know, but the Lakers have checked in on him. They have asked about what the price would be.' 'In practice, you know, the thing with Wiggins is that the practical application of Andrew Wiggins isn't always what the theoretical Andrew Wiggins gets hyped up to be,' Irwin continued. 'And you arrive at a pretty meh experience, sometimes.': Lakers with interest in Heat's Andrew Wiggins Sam Navarro-Imagn Images While the Lakers have rumors surrounding such players as Austin Reaves, the primary goal is to continue to build around Luka Doncic and LeBron James. Wiggins has been a productive player, but Irwin has some concerns in regards to how 'driven he is,' which the team takes 'very seriously.' Advertisement 'Have I heard of any interest in him? I think right now the Lakers are interested in any athlete,' Irwin said. 'But there have been some other situations there where it's like you aren't necessarily sure if basketball is the highest priority, and when you have a guy making that much money, like, I better eat, sleep, and breathe the sport,' Irwin continued. 'So some of those questions about how driven he is, those are the kinds of things that the Lakers take very seriously.' At any rate, Los Angeles looks to improve after a disappointing early playoff exit after finishing third in the West. Lakers' LeBron James hilariously recalls ‘most egregious' travel of his career
The post Lakers' LeBron James hilariously recalls 'most egregious' travel of his career appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Los Angeles Lakers are currently looking for ways to retool this offseason in the hopes of maximizing however much time LeBron James has left in the NBA. James still has plenty left in the tank at 41 years old, but his patience may be wearing thin after the Lakers' second straight first round exit this past spring. Advertisement Recently, James took to his newly relaunched Mind the Game podcast with co-host Steve Nash, and one of the topics discussed was what James views as the most egregious uncalled travel of his career. James recalled a 2017 game against the Washington Wizards, at which point he was a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers, in response. 'We were down one. I got the ball in transition at about half court, and I was driving the lane. It's late in the game… I got into the lane and I traveled like a motherf*****, and missed the layup' said James. 'I don't know if I felt guilty. It felt weird. I had a wide open layup and missed it.' Of course, moments later, James would go on to hit one of the most iconic shots of his career when Kevin Love launched an inbounds pass down to him with less than three seconds on the clock and the Cavs now trailing by three. Advertisement James spun off of defender Bradley Beal and lofted in a turnaround three-pointer from the wing off the glass to tie the game and send it into overtime, where Cleveland eventually won. It's safe to say that the incredible shot more than made up for the layup blunder seconds earlier. James is hoping to create more memories like this one with Lakers teammate Luka Doncic, but the team has some serious work to do this offseason if they want to reach the level of the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference.
