Aaron Boone had to come to Anthony Volpe's defense following his struggles in the New York Yankees' 4-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night.
Volpe stepped up to bat three times throughout the matchup, failing to land a hit. He even committed a fielding error as he made a mistake on a throw, which proved to be costly as Toronto scored all four of their runs in the fifth inning.
Boone reflected on the team's loss after the game. He deflected criticism regarding Volpe's mistakes throughout the season, giving the shortstop high remarks.
'He's still a top shortstop,' Boone said.

The Yankees' bullpen couldn't hold off the Blue Jays' offense, especially in the fifth inning. They conceded six hits after 31 at-bats, as Carlos Rodon got the loss after being on the mound for five frames.
New York fell to a 55-45 record on the season, holding the second spot of the AL East Division standings. They are four games behind the Blue Jays for the top seed.
Aaron Boone and the Yankees will look to bounce back in Game 2 of their series against the Blue Jays. The contest will take place on July 22 at 7:07 p.m. ET.

Lakers and Luka Doncic agree to three-year, $165-million contract extension
Luka Doncic has provided the Lakers and their fans with good news for the future by signing a contract extension with the team on Saturday. Doncic signed a three-year, $165-million deal with a player option in 2028 on Saturday morning, his agent, Bill Duffy, confirmed to The Times. In photos that accompanied in a 'Men's Heath' magazine feature, Doncic appears to be a changed man. He is toned and slimmed down in the photos from the magazine. 'Just visually, I would say my whole body looks better,' Doncic said in the story that was published Monday. Doncic was quoted in the article as having been at home in Croatia when his workouts began, and in subsequent interviews said he did not play basketball for a month. It was a variety of things that got Doncic looking so much more defined than in past years, from weightlifting, sprints and a change of his eating habits in committing to a better diet. Doncic talked in the story about how he wants to maintain his dedication to his body throughout the season. 'This year, with my [training] team, I think we did a huge step,' Doncic said in the article. 'But this is just the start, you know. I need to keep going. His Slovenian team will face Poland on August 28, which will give Doncic a chance to show off his body and conditioning in a basketball game setting. Doncic also played a role in the Lakers getting two much-needed free agents this summer by helping recruit the players. Doncic reached out to center Deandre Ayton, who signed with the Lakers for two years and $16.2 million, giving the 6-6 guard and Los Angeles the big man they absolutely had to have for this upcoming season. Doncic also called guard Marcus Smart, who signed a two-year contract worth $11 million, giving the Lakers a much-needed wing defender after they lost Dorian Finney-Smith in free agency. Aaron Glenn gets emotional as the reality of being the Jets' head coach 'hit me pretty hard'
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The reality of the situation finally hit Aaron Glenn. More than seven months after being hired by the New York Jets, the first-time NFL head coach got surprisingly emotional Saturday. And it had nothing to do with the 12 penalties called on his team during practice. 'I'm sure this is going to hit at some point, but I told the players this: The first time since I became head coach, today was the first day it really hit me,' Glenn said to open his post-practice news conference. "And it hit me once I heard the fans give the 'J-E-T-S' chant. 'And I don't know why, but it just hit me.' The 53-year-old Glenn was drafted by the Jets in the first round in 1994 and played for the franchise for eight of his 15 NFL seasons. The three-time Pro Bowl cornerback was also a personnel scout for New York for two seasons and a longtime assistant coach, most recently as Detroit's defensive coordinator for four seasons, before getting the chance to lead his former team. 'It hit me pretty hard,' Glenn said, his voice cracking slightly. "Man, I am so thankful. I'm thankful for this organization that gave me a shot. I'm thankful for this organization that gave me my second shot at becoming a coach. 'I don't know why, fellas. But it hit me and hit me pretty hard, and, man, I just feel grateful. Grateful to be in this position.' Glenn, along with new general manager Darren Mougey, faces the task of turning around the fortunes of a franchise that has the NFL's longest active playoff drought at 14 seasons. He has talked several times since being hired in January about changing the culture around the Jets and building them into a consistent winner by stressing fundamentals and competition. But with the team practicing in front of packed stands for its annual scrimmage at the facility, Glenn couldn't shake his emotions — especially when he heard the fans. 'Yeah, I was,' Glenn said when asked if he was surprised he felt that way. 'I thought it had already hit me.' One thing Glenn has focused on during training camp is cutting down on penalties after the Jets were called for the most in the league in each of the past two seasons. He has officials at every practice to try to get players to understand how plays will be called. But it didn't seem to help much Saturday. The Jets had 12 penalties called on them during what Glenn called a 'pseudo scrimmage,' including several holding calls. 'There are a lot of things we've got to clean up and the one thing I'm sure everybody saw is the penalties,' the coach said. 'I'm glad we had the refs out there because that's one thing we want to hit — we want to make sure we hit those hard. And I want them to ref it just like it was a game and I thought they did a good job of that.' It made for a sloppy practice as Justin Fields and the rest of offense, including the backups, struggled throughout the session. Some calls even had the fans booing. 'There's no excuses,' Glenn said. 'Our players understand that. We know penalties, they're discipline issues and we've got to make sure we are more disciplined in aspects on both sides of the ball. We will get those cleaned up, I promise you that. But there's a lot of work to do.' Injuries Cornerback ace Kris Boyd left the field on a cart after injuring a shoulder during special teams drills. He went down on the sideline and was writhing in pain while he was looked at by trainers. Glenn had no immediate word on his condition. Glenn said wide receiver Xavier Gipson also injured a shoulder on the final play of practice when he tried to catch a pass in the end zone. Garrett Nussmeier ahead of Arch Manning in early draft rankings
Even though LSU did not have the season most expected last year, quarterback Garrett Nussmeier still had a great season, throwing for over 4,000 yards and 29 touchdowns. Nuessmeier carried his team throughout the season, and the expectations in Baton Rouge are that he is expected to have another good season. So, it shouldn't be a shocker that, in early 2026 NFL Draft evaluations, he is ahead of Heisman favorite Arch Manning. According to the NFL experts at AtoZ Sports, they are in awe of Nussmeier and his arm. Which is why they think he will be the first SEC quarterback taken in next year's draft. 'You could make a case that last season there really wasn't a better quarterback in a clean pocket than Garrett Nussmeier. Now, granted, he had one of the best offensive lines in the entire country, but he still made some extremely impressive throws. I'm not sure that the offensive line will be as good now as it was in 2024, considering they lost a few guys to the 2025 NFL Draft, but it won't be bad. They do have an extremely impressive group of weapons around him thanks to the addition of transfer wide receivers Barion Brown and Nic Anderson. Nussmeier has pretty strong arm talent, and in Brian Kelly's offense, he will get to show that off plenty. I ultimately have him going as a first-round pick, possibly later on day one. Nussmeier doesn't really have the frame or size of a prototype NFL quarterback, but he should be great this season–perhaps the best QB in the country.' – Justin Churchill, A to Z Sports Nussmeier's stock can rise if he has a Joe Burrow-type season with the Tigers. If he can put up those types of numbers or even close to it, he may end up as the No. 1 overall pick in next year's draft.
