Owners of beloved Stockport fish and chip shop 'extremely proud' as they win major award

Yahoo27-02-2025
A much-loved Stockport fish and chip shop has won a major award at a prestigious industry awards. The National Fish & Chip Awards took place at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in London last night and saw awards handed out to the UK's best chip shops and takeaways.
In a major coup for the North East, two businesses in County Durham were awarded the coveted Takeaway of the Year and Restaurant of the Year prizes. Other awards included Young Fish Frier of the Year, Newcomer, Supplier of the Year, and Outstanding achievement, amongst others.
Organised by trade body the National Federation of Fish Fryers, The National Fish and Chip Awards are the most coveted in the world of fish and chips, and is now in its 37th year.

Closer to home Taylors, in Woodley, took home the award for Training and Development.
The celebrated Stockport chippy revealed last November that it had made it through to the final 20 in this year's National Fish and Chip Awards 2025.
Owner Anne Wallace previously told the M.E.N.: "When I look at who we're up against across the UK it's incredible in terms of the quality. I just feel very honoured."
Taylors, located on Woodley precinct in Stockport, is a firm favourite with locals and has been described by regulars as 'excellent' in reviews shared online. It was founded in 1966 in Hattersley before moving to its current home in the mid-1980s.
Sharing the news on Facebook after the win, the team at Taylors wrote: "Ladies & gentlemen...we have a winner!
"Extremely proud of the whole team and the continued support from our amazing customers. Putting Stockport on the map."
Hundreds of customers and fans of the Stockport fish and chip shop commented on the post, with many saying the news was 'brilliant', and the the award was 'well deserved'.
One wrote: "Well done, what a great team…what great fish and chips…and fabulous community spirit."
Another added: "Congratulations!! Super proud that a local Woodley business has won… we can vouch for the chips."
And a third added: "Brilliant well done to all of you . Each and everyone of you deserve this recognition."
The 2025 edition isn't the team's first time at the National Fish and Chip Awards though, as last year, manager Jamie Toland, who started working at the chippy as a 14-year-old, was crowned Employee of the Year at the 2024 ceremony.
Judging of the final 20 businesses is a rigorous process, with the number being whittled down to a final 10 before the awards ceremony.
A number of attributes are taken into account by an expert judging panel including sustainability, marketing, staff training, health and safety and hygiene.
Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers, commented: 'The bar for the National Fish & Chip Awards is set higher each year across the criteria the competitors are evaluated against, and our new titleholders have put everything into elevating their menus, sharpening their skills and developing their expertise.
'The quick-service sector is constantly changing but what remains is that customers expect a high-quality product that tastes like heaven, that sustainability is carefully considered throughout the experience and the service is on-point.
"Each winner hits the mark on all these fronts and their hard work is achieving national attention.
"On behalf of the NFFF, I'd like to say a big 'congratulations' and 'thank you' to these businesses for being shining examples of greatness in the fish and chip industry.'

Services announced for Sameer Eid, metro Detroit restaurateur

Arrangements for Sameer Kaiser Eid, a longtime and prominent metro Detroit restaurateur who died on Friday, Aug. 15, have been announced. Eid, 85, was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who spent more than 50 years in the restaurant business. He was the founder of Phoenicia, which got its start in Highland Park in August 1971. He walked into his favorite Lebanese-owned diner in Highland Park for lunch that one August day and came out its owner, having bought the place for $5,700. He later moved and relocated the restaurant to Birmingham, where it's been a mainstay on Old Woodward Avenue for four decades. Eid, along with his son, Samy, built Chickpea Hospitality, the family-owned and -operated group. Along with Phoenicia, fine dining establishments Forest and Wilder's in Birmingham, and Leila in downtown Detroit, named after his wife, are part of Chickpea Hospitality. Eid was born Jan. 24, 1940, in Marjayoun, Lebanon, to a Greek Orthodox family. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1961 to study banking and finance at North Texas State University, according to his obituary. Eid then moved to Detroit in 1967 to work in the drapery business. Over the years, Phoenicia, earned many accolades, including earning the Detroit Free Press' inaugural Restaurant of the Year Classic, a designation for restaurants of distinction with more than 10 years in operation of continuous ownership. Eid also earned the first Sylvia Rector Lifetime Achievement Award for Hospitality, an honor given in memory of the late Free Press restaurant critic who launched the Free Press' Restaurant of the Year program in 2000. Eid, according to his obituary, credited his longevity to "discipline and small indulgences." "He swore by a daily dose of Lebanese olive oil, poured into a pocket of pita and taken like medicine," according to his obituary. More: Longtime metro Detroit restaurateur Sameer Eid dies at 85 In social media posts on the Phoenicia Facebook page and the funeral home's tribute wall, Eid is remembered as a legend in the restaurant and hospitality world. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 32515 Woodward Ave., Royal Oak. On Wednesday, Aug. 20, a funeral liturgy takes place at St. Mary Orthodox Basilica, 18200 Merriman Rd. in Livonia. One of Capitol Hill's Most Celebrated Restaurants Has Abruptly Closed

Capitol Hill's Stateside, where the Vietnamese-French food has been drawing rave reviews since it opened a decade ago, is now permanently closed, owner Eric Johnson announced in a short Instagram post on Monday, August 4. 'Thanks for the memories Seattle!!!' read the announcement in full. This is something of a shock to the Seattle dining world. Stateside has been a critical darling since it opened; it was Seattle Met's Restaurant of the Year in 2015, and the magazine singled out its iced-coffee creamsicles, crispy duck fresh rolls, and chili cumin pork ribs. Stateside was also known for its crispy chicken served with a master stock that Johnson and his team have been using and reusing for literal years. In 2016, Stateside opened a sibling bar next door, called Foreign National, and together the two businesses have become cornerstones of the local scene. 'Almost a decade in, Stateside is still a Seattle go-to,' wrote the New York Times when it put Stateside on its most recent list of the city's best restaurants. Johnson opened Stateside after years of working in high-end kitchens in Paris, New York, and China. In 2016, he told Munchies that 'I start with Vietnamese food as a baseline for my cooking and I take some liberties in Chinese and French directions.' In that interview, he said that Stateside has dealt with skepticism from a couple different directions — from Vietnamese people skeptical that a non-Vietnamese chef knows his way around their cuisine, and from diners conditioned to think that Vietnamese food should be cheap. Judging by the restaurant's success and longevity, there aren't a lot of skeptics left. On Thursday, July 31, Johnson announced that Foreign National would be closing after that night. Stateside is closing with even less notice — there will be no farewell tour, no time for guests to get one last taste of that master stock. Reached by email, Johnson said that the closures were due to the lease being up.
