PARIS, France — French police have detained twelve suspects after 145 people reported being pricked with syringes during the country's annual street music festival, officials said Sunday.
Millions of people took to the streets across France on Saturday evening for the Fete de la Musique, with authorities reporting 'unprecedented crowds' in Paris.
Before the party, posts on social media had called for women to be targeted during the festivities.
The interior ministry said 145 victims across the country had reported being stabbed with needles. Paris police reported 13 cases in the capital.
Officials did not say if these were cases of so-called needle spiking with date-rape drugs such as Rohypnol or GHB, used by attackers to render victims confused or inconscious and vulnerable to sexual assault.
'Some victims were taken to hospital for toxicological tests,' the ministry said.
In Paris, investigations were opened after three people including a 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old male, reported being stabbed in separate incidents across Paris, prosecutors said.
All three reported feeling unwell.
Across France, 12 suspects have been arrested, the interior ministry said. Among them were four people in the southwestern city of Angouleme suspected of having targeted around 50 victims, said a police source.
Apart from those suspects, more than 370 people were detained during the festival on various charges, including nearly 90 people in Paris.
Fourteen participants in the festivities were seriously injured, including a 17-year-old hospitalised after being found sitting on the street with stab wounds to the lower abdomen.
Thirteen members of law enforcement were also injured.
The prefect of the Paris police, Laurent Nunez, said that 'no major incident has been reported'.

$1.1 million worth of scallop meat seized, person arrested in southwest Nova Scotia

Scallops are caught in the net aboard the trawler Le Chant des Sirenes (The Mermaids' song), fishing at the limits of the French-UK waters, off Granville, Normandy, Tuesday, Nov.9, 2021. (AP Photo/Nicolas Garriga) Fisheries and Oceans Canada officers arrested one person in southwest Nova Scotia Tuesday after officers seized 22,638 kilograms (49,795 pounds) of scallop meat, worth about $1.1 million. The department says fishery officers from the Barrington detachment first detected the fishing vessel using a Vessel Monitoring System, before dispatching an offshore surveillance unit to visually confirm the vessel was fishing illegally in the closed area. 'Fishery officers boarded the vessel at sea and seized the catch. The un-shucked scallops on board were returned live to the ocean, and the captain was directed to take the vessel to Shelburne where the rest of the catch was offloaded,' reads a news release from Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The department says the unnamed person was arrested for violations under the Fisheries Act, including fishing in a closed area – Scallop Fishing Area 29 D. The incident is under investigation. Toronto police arrest 2 people in human trafficking investigation

22-year-old Tyrique Harmer of Hamilton alongside 21-year-old Maria Toth-Taddeo of Toronto charged in connection to a human trafficking investigation (TPS photos). Toronto police say they have arrested two people following a human trafficking investigation involving two underage female victims. The investigation began in June, as members of the Human Trafficking Unit began looking into allegations that two women, aged 14 and 17, were trafficked through a 'combination of deception, coercion, and control.' Police say the accused created online ads for sexual services, took sexualized pictures of the victims, transported them to hotels to meet clients, and kept the money they earned. On Thursday, officers arrested the suspects who are from both Hamilton and Toronto. The first suspect, 22-year-old Tyrique Harmer, is charged with trafficking persons under 18, possession of a weapon, publishing and possessing child pornography, and advertising another person's sexual services, in addition to several other offences. The second suspect, 21-year-old Maria Toth-Taddeo of Toronto, faces the same charges along with several other offences. Police say they believe there may be additional victims and are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
