WHO designates Jeddah and Madinah among 16 'Healthy Cities'
Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated 16 cities as 'Healthy Cities' and two Saudi cities found a place among them, according to the Ministry of Health. Jeddah and Madinah stand out as the first cities in the Middle East with populations of two million to receive the accreditation, marking a key milestone in the ministry's Healthy Cities Program and its ongoing efforts to enhance quality of life. The accomplishment reflects successful collaboration among government and community stakeholders, through the application of more than 80 international evaluation criteria across nine core domains spanning health, development, and sustainability. The ministry noted that the national health system continues to strengthen its global standing through a series of significant achievements in scientific research and international recognition. The Kingdom has also made notable advances in medical research and innovation. A study conducted by King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) on robotic liver transplantation was named one of the top 10 most influential research papers of 2024 by the American Society of Transplantation. In addition, seven Saudi hospitals were included in Brand Finance's Global Top 250 Hospitals 2025 report, highlighting the Kingdom's strong healthcare infrastructure, international competitiveness, and commitment to high-quality patient care. These accomplishments are closely aligned with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 — particularly the 'A Vibrant Society' and 'A Thriving Economy' pillars, to enhance quality of life and support innovation and scientific advancement. Together, these milestones reflect the integrated efforts of the national health system and various sectors, reinforcing the Kingdom's position as a regional hub and global destination for advanced healthcare.

Health Minister Reviews Major Healthcare Projects in Madinah
Health Minister and Chairman of the Health Holding Company Board of Directors, Fahad AlJalajel, recently conducted an inspection tour of key health projects at King Salman bin Abdulaziz Medical City in Madinah. These initiatives, led by the Madinah Health Cluster, aim to elevate healthcare quality and accessibility in line with the Health Sector Transformation Program and the broader goals of Saudi Vision 2030. Specialized Women's Health Center AlJalajel visited the placenta previa treatment center—part of the women's health track under the Saudi Model of Care. The center supports cesarean deliveries conducted in the interventional radiology department and offers uterine artery embolization procedures, which help reduce complications and improve safety for both mothers and newborns. The minister reviewed enhancements at the emergency departments of both the main hospital and the Maternity and Children's Hospital. Key improvements include: A 101-bed capacity upgrade A new 12-bed rapid triage area A fully activated case management system Expanded waiting areas These upgrades are designed to enhance patient flow, boost readiness, and improve overall care quality. A major stop on the tour was the newly expanded interventional radiology department, which now includes two cutting-edge devices. This 200% increase in capacity is expected to significantly improve diagnostic precision, treatment efficiency, and reduce the need for surgical interventions. Technology-Driven Prevention, Treatment AlJalajel also inspected the diabetic foot treatment center, which offers integrated preventive and therapeutic services. The center uses advanced technologies to manage complications and improve the quality of life for diabetic patients. The tour included a visit to the newly opened hemodialysis center, developed in partnership with the Abdullah Alrajhi Foundation. The facility is equipped with 10 beds, including isolation and respiratory rooms, and built to top-tier medical standards. To strengthen emergency response infrastructure, the minister reviewed the implementation of phase two of the air evacuation landing strips initiative. Finally, this phase adds seven new landing pads at King Salman Medical City, Al-Haram Hospital, and other regional hospitals—bringing the total to 15 helipads across the Madinah Health Cluster. Robotic-assisted implantation is world's first
RIYADH: King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Riyadh has performed the world's first implantation of two artificial pumps for biventricular support using robotic technology on a patient with advanced heart failure. The groundbreaking procedure opens new horizons in circulatory support techniques for patients with complex cardiac conditions and marks a medical achievement that culminated in the patient's recovery within a short period following the surgery. The procedure represents a major advance in the treatment of bilateral heart failure, which was traditionally performed through full sternotomy, an approach associated with higher surgical risks and prolonged recovery. However, the cardiac surgery team, led by Prof. Feras Khaliel, performed the operation through small incisions using remotely controlled high-precision robotic arms, resulting in reduced blood loss, lower risk of infection, and faster patient recovery. The milestone reflects the integration of expertise across multiple departments at the hospital, including cardiac surgery, cardiology, anesthesia, critical care, biomedical engineering, and advanced life support. The procedure was meticulously planned and benefited from 3D imaging technologies, real-time surgical navigation, and innovative solutions.
