Must-see Twin Cities concerts this week: Uncle Acid, Abel Selaocoe, EIVøR
Don't let the return of snow bring you down. There are plenty of reasons to get out of the house this week.
Here are (nearly) all the concerts around the Twin Cities worth an evening out this week.
Thursday, Feb. 13 at The Fitzgerald Theater
Uncle Acid has somewhat quietly become a titanic force in psych rock. As far back as 2012's Blood Lust, the English band has donned a horror-show, B-movie aesthetic in its album art, movie dialogue samples, and epic, guitar-forwarding songwriting. Their latest album, Nell' ora blu, pushes the vibe a little further. It's a psych-rock soundtrack to an Italian Giallo movie that doesn't exist. The tour has them performing that new release.
Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, who preceded Nell' ora blu with a live album recorded over multiple shows at First Avenue, will have Jonathan Hultén opening.
Friday, Feb. 14 at The Cedar Cultural Center
The Faroese singer last passed through the U.S. in 2022, and in the intervening time, her stature has only grown. Her latest album, Enn, is an eerie, ethereal record that showcases her powerful voice and songwriting that melds folk, classical, ambient, and electronic influences.
Her music can be richly atmospheric, almost new age adjacent (as long as you don't take "new age" as an insult). Then it turns on a dime with booming beats or demonic growls. She's maybe the Nordic Kate Bush with her versatility and ability to synthesize classical, dance, and even metal genres.
Saturday, Feb. 15 at The Dakota
The Americana group is posting up at The Dakota post-Valentine's Day. Independently, their members have been playing around the Twin Cities and Eau Claire for a long time, but when they landed as a unit in 2020, they almost instantly gained a following. That was furthered with their sophomore album, New Rays From an Old Sun.
There's an easy charm to the pop melodies produced by Barb Brynstad, Savannah Smith, and Adam Levy. They work off one another like they've been playing together for decades, crafting modern-feeling roots music. But there's also a thread in there that cuts a little deeper, both emotionally and musically.
Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15 at Ordway Concert Hall; Sunday, Feb. 16 at Ted Mann Concert Hall
South Africa-born, UK-based cellist and vocalist Abel Selaocoe defies genre. I don't mean that in the way where we use it as shorthand to say an artist blends styles. Selaocoe, who will perform with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra this week, feels more like he's daring genre to bind him. He, of course, plays classical music, but he has also created site-specific installations, improvises, throat sings, incorporates electronics, and crafts distinctive sounds through prepared cello. He can as easily play Bach as draw on his South African heritage.
As the SPCO's Artistic Partner, he'll bring all of that to the stage with a program that includes work by Igor Stravinsky, Norwegian jazz musician and composer Marius Neset, and the world premiere of his own composition, "Four Spirits."
On Saturday, the SPCO and Selaocoe will be joined by the Heart & Soul Drum Academy, an organization that empowers "8 to 17-year-olds through African cultural enrichment via drumming and dance, while developing essential life skills."
Friday, Feb. 14 at Turf Club
The fiery local group is hosting its third annual tribute to Lucinda Williams. While it seems clear, knowing that the band does this tribute, that there's a bit of Williams in their music, they're also a very different band, which ought to bring some fresh perspective to Williams' classic (and expansive) work.

Rescue Dog Who Loves Playing With Water Wins Pet of the Week
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. From the adorable moment a puppy "picked" his owner to the heartbreaking reason a pug was hiding in a closet, we love viral pet videos, but we also love seeing our readers' pets. Every week, as part of the Newsweek Pet of the Week, we share a selection of readers' adorable videos and pictures of their pets. If you want your pet to be featured, follow the instructions at the end of this story to get involved. Winner Rebel the dog playing with the hose. Rebel the dog playing with the hose. Leiha Boyer This week's Pet of the Week winner is Rebel, a rescue dog who loves to play. In a heartwarming video, he was caught on camera playing with water—just one part of his new happy life. But things weren't always that way for Rebel, as his early life was marked by neglect. Abandoned at a trailer and confined to a kennel, he was forgotten. "There was no power or water so they kept a blanket over the kennel," owner Leiha Boyer told Newsweek. When she first met him, he had been under that blanket, "I guess since yesterday," she was told. Rebel's sad, soulful eyes silently pleaded, "please help me," and Boyer did just that. "From the moment I opened that kennel door, he has never had to be in one again," Boyer said. Now, Rebel is a cherished companion who is always with his owner and is "absolutely ROTTEN from how much I have spoiled in a good way," she said. Though he's a big dog who may appear intimidating, Boyer insists "he just wants to be loved to sing Chris Stapleton's 'Tennessee Whiskey,' and play in a water hose." Finalists Pictures of Casper the cream golden retriever who loves mud. Pictures of Casper the cream golden retriever who loves mud. David Wilmoth Our first finalist this week is an English cream golden retriever named Casper. The English cream is a variation of the standard and much-loved golden retriever, characterized by a coat that ranges in color from light cream to almost white. But Casper doesn't seem to have gotten the memo about his light coat and spends much of his time covered in mud. "I've never had a dog so in love with mud and dirt," joked owner David Wilmoth. Phoebe Donald Next up this week is Bitty Boo Boo, a 10-year-old cat with a diva personality. "Since I first adopted her she has allowed me to dress her up," owner Phoebe Donald told Newsweek. Bitty loves lounging in the warmest spots, especially "directly in front of or on a heater vent." Though she's not fond of other cats, she greets humans with a friendly "bunt" on the leg. Surprisingly, she also enjoys car rides and even looks forward to vet visits. "She is one awesome cat," Donald said. Expressive Loki the cat hanging out on the bed. Abandoned as a kitten on a second-floor balcony, Loki was rescued by friends and brought to Hokey, who had lost his cat a year and a half earlier. Since then, Loki has become "one of the most amazing cats I've owned," Hokey said, describing him as intelligent, talkative, and considerate, especially to his other cat. "You can easily tell what's on his mind because of his facial expressions," Hokey said. "Love this little guy." If you think your pet could be next week's Newsweek "Pet of the Week," send us your funny and heartwarming videos and pictures of your pet, along with a bit about them to life@ and they could appear in our "Pet of the Week" lineup.
