IISER supervisor faces ‘vicious trolling' after PhD scholar's death
1 2 Kolkata: PhD supervisor of the IISER-Kolkata scholar who recently died by suicide has alleged of being viciously trolled on social media. The professor at the institute's Biological Sciences department also said that the trolling has not only taken a toll on her mental and physical health but also affected her children and students. Before killing himself, Anamitra Roy had left behind a detailed Facebook post in which he mentioned recurrent physical and mental abuse since childhood, both at home and outside. He had also said that he was abused at the institute by a fellow scholar. The supervisor said on Wednesday, "The way I am being trolled... has affected everyone around me, including my children and elderly parents. The abuses that are being hurled at me have affected my career, image and the reputation of the dog lab. I am being tagged as a 'murderer' and a 'witch' and it seems that people have already convicted me without a trial. I am afraid to leave my home. So is my daughter. Several of my PhD students are seeking mental health support because of the treatment that is being meted out to them by some members of the IISER-Kolkata community, both on social media and outside the campus. "I worked tirelessly for two years for an international conference scheduled for later this month. But I had to back out because of the trolling," she shared. The professor added that she hoped investigators would record her statement soon. "I want the truth to come out and am cooperating with the investigation. I interacted with Anamitra since his second year of BS, listened to his troubles, gave advice, and supported him. In fact, he did an internship with the lab and was associated with it ever since. He did his Masters thesis in my lab and decided to continue as a PhD student in the lab because he found the environment supportive and amicable. It was a huge personal loss to me." The supervisor's husband quit as the dean of student affairs following the incident after students protested against the negligence of the anti-ragging committee headed by him.
