Is Nebraska on the verge of a breakthrough? Cincinnati opener should provide quick answer

New York Times11-07-2025
Nebraska football won 29 consecutive season-opening games from 1986 to 2014. The Huskers are 4-5 since then, losing each time they opened away from Memorial Stadium or against a power conference opponent.
Many of the stinky starts — Illinois in 2021, Northwestern in 2022 and coaching debuts for Scott Frost against Colorado in 2018 and Matt Rhule at Minnesota in 2023 — snuffed months of offseason momentum.

Now, though, confidence is swelling internally at Nebraska. The program believes it has progressed and is not so vulnerable to another faceplant. But as Rhule's third team pushes toward the newly named Kansas City Classic against Cincinnati at Arrowhead Stadium on Aug. 28, evidence of an impending breakthrough remains scarce.
Has Nebraska made a jump? Its first season-opening win against a Power 4 team since 2003 would help signal that it has.
Prognosticators are largely predicting that the Thursday night ESPN opener will be a Nebraska victory. Joel Klatt of Fox Sports listed the Huskers among 10 teams most likely to make the College Football Playoff in 2025 for the first time. Nebraska is often in the conversation as a nine- or 10-win contender, not a team in danger of an early stumble.
Don't sleep on the Bearcats, though.
While Cincinnati is 8-16 in Satterfield's two seasons, the Bearcats return a quarterback in Brendan Sorsby who threw for 2,813 yards while completing 64 percent of his passes last season. In Cincy's first five games, Sorsby, an Indiana transfer, tossed 10 touchdowns to one interception. But he struggled late in the season when his receivers failed to get free on the perimeter, Satterfield said. Big 12 defenses loaded up in the box.
The Bearcats addressed their issues in the portal by adding 6-foot-5 receiver Jeff Caldwell, who's pushed his weight to 214 pounds while maintaining speed and an 11-foot-9 broad jump. Cyrus Allen from Texas A&M and Caleb Goodie from Colorado State provide a burst that Cincinnati lacked in 2024.
Tight end Joe Royer is a preseason All-Big 12 pick. Running back Tawee Walker, a transfer from Wisconsin, rushed for 864 yards last season.
While the Bearcats have had their ups and downs — Cincinnati beat Big 12 champ Arizona State last year but closed the season with five consecutive losses — the program is only four years removed from a CFP appearance.

And as other coaches captured the attention of Nebraska fans this week at Big 12 media days, Cincinnati's Scott Satterfield billed his squad as a contender in the wide-open conference, and his revamped offense could be a handful for first-year Nebraska defensive coordinator John Butler.
'We're a much more explosive football team this year,' Satterfield said.
Satterfield said he's noticed an uptick in urgency among the Bearcats this summer because of the name-brand opponent in Nebraska.
'It's a great gauge for our football team,' he said. 'We feel like you've got to be hitting on all cylinders when you start the season against a team like Nebraska.'
He referred to the game in Kansas City as a 'neutral site.' It is, of course, but only by definition.
Per an early summer update from Nebraska athletic director Troy Dannen, 62,000 tickets were sold for the opener. A sellout or close to it at the 76,000-seat home of the Kansas City Chiefs appears likely.
Expect the overwhelming majority of those fans to back Nebraska, a seven-point favorite, according to BetMGM. The willingness of Nebraska fans to travel and the state's close proximity to Arrowhead ensure an environment that will feel like home to the Huskers.
Initially, the matchup was scheduled for Indianapolis, 110 miles from Cincinnati. The programs agreed late last year to move to Kansas City in a deal that sweetened the financial pot for the Bearcats.
'Strictly football and as a coach, I'd rather play at home,' Satterfield said. 'Bring Nebraska to our place, and let's go. So now, it'll be like a road game for both teams.'
Or perhaps not.
Regardless, Rhule and Nebraska players, including quarterback Dylan Raiola, will have their opportunity at Big Ten media days on July 22 to present a picture of a team on the rise. Many of their talking points figure to sound similar to what we heard this week from Cincinnati.
They are two programs mired in something closer to the same place than the Huskers might comfortably want to admit. But of the two, only Nebraska has a chance to exorcise a decade of demons.

Barstool Sports ranks Nebraska's Dylan Raiola as one of the Big Ten's best quarterbacks

Another round of rankings arrived this week for Big Ten quarterbacks, with Barstool Sports' Brandon Walker releasing his preseason list. Nebraska's Dylan Raiola found himself in the top ten, nestled in the No. 6 spot. Raiola's been finding himself ranked highly among quarterbacks across the league. The Athletic put him No. 40 across all 136 starting quarterbacks, and USA TODAY Sports placed him at No. 17. According to Walker, Raiola is ranked higher than eight of the nine Big Ten quarterbacks Nebraska's set to face this season. The one quarterback ranked higher than Raiola that will play Nebraska this season is Penn State's Drew Allar, who sits atop the list, with Illinois's Luke Altmyer in second. Although Ohio State has not yet named a starter, the position of 'Buckeyes starting QB' is ranked third. Incoming Michigan freshman Bryce Underwood sits at No. 10, who Nebraska is set to face in September. Raiola and the Huskers are already entering the season with high expectations following their 7-6 season and victory in the Bad Boy Mowers' Pinstripe Bowl. Last year, Raiola led FBS freshmen in completion percentage and also ranked 14th nationally in completion percentage, tossing 275-for-410. His mark is also the best completion percentage by a freshman in school history. Raiola also set the freshman record at Nebraska in passing yards, racking up 2,819 yards. He also ranked third among all freshmen in passing yards and was a semifinalist for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year award. Nebraska will open the 2025 college football season on Thursday, August 28, when the Huskers face the Cincinnati Bearcats at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. World's Tallest Teen, 7-foot-9 Center Olivier Rioux, Tries Football at Florida

The world's tallest teenager is trying his hand — his reach, really — at football. Florida basketball player Olivier Rioux, a 7-foot-9 center who played for the Under-19 Canadian national team this summer, recently worked out for the Gators' football team. Rioux donned an orange helmet and took snaps on special teams, with Florida assistant coaches hoping his massive wingspan might be a difference maker when it comes to blocking field goals and extra points. "I like the idea," Gators basketball coach Todd Golden said during a booster event Thursday evening. "I give them credit for trying it." There was one issue: The 305-pound Rioux has an 11-inch vertical, so even with his extra-long reach, he was unable to block any kicks during the workout. "They were a little disappointed," Golden said. No worries. Rioux can simply stick to his full-time gig with the hoops team. After redshirting as a true freshman last season, he's expected to get on the court in a limited capacity this fall. He's unlikely to play much considering the defending national champions return their entire frontcourt, but he should at least get on the court in garbage time. Golden has already considered using him to guard inbound passes, something Rioux did to perfection just before halftime against the United States in the FIBA U19 World Cup in Switzerland earlier this month. Rioux forced an errant pass that led to a turnover and a 3-pointer just before halftime. Rioux's unusual height landed him in the Guinness World Records a few years ago, and he has become a walking viral video at Florida. While coaches and teammates climbed a ladder to cut pieces of the nets after the Gators won the SEC Tournament, Rioux was able to do it while standing flat-footed. Reporting by The Associated Press. Taylor Swift finally debuts on Travis Kelce's Instagram

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift have been together for two years, but the couple crossed a major milestone on Thursday. For the first time in their relationship, the 14-time Grammy winner made an appearance on Kelce's Instagram (@killatrav). "Had some adventures this offseason. Kept it 100," the caption of the post read. Kelce posted 13 photos -- a number significant to Swift -- that spanned several events and seasons from the last few months. There are images of Kelce with friends fishing and hiking, pictures with his brother, Jason Kelce, a picture from his Tight End University event, a picture of each of his parents, several images with girlfriend Taylor and many more. It was a lovely look into Kelce's life, highlighting friends and family since the season ended in February. The images also adorably revealed that a photo of the couple is the lock screen on what seems to be both Kelce's and Swift's phones. This isn't the first time that one half of the superstar couple has been featured on the others' social media, however. The Kansas City player was posted to Swift's TikTok account (@taylorswift) back in February of 2024 after the Chiefs won the Super Bowl. NOW it's officially official.
