After Zimbabwe took early wickets, Mulder rebuilt the innings with a 184-run partnership alongside David Bedingham. Lhuan-dre Pretorius also contributed with a quick half-century to help the World Test Champions post a dominant total on the opening day.
Mulder was appointed captain in place of Keshav Maharaj, who is out of the series due to a groin injury. Regular skipper Temba Bavuma is also unavailable. Mulder had already made an impact in the first Test, where he scored a century and helped South Africa to a 328-run victory.

Knight, who made his ODI debut against Pakistan in Manchester on August 29, 1996, amassed a total of 264 runs for the English team in his first three ODIs. Whereas Breetzke has scored 290 runs. The right-handed batter scored 57 runs from 56 balls against Australia on Tuesday in the first ODI of the bilateral series played at Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns. In his first two ODI matches, he scored 150 runs against New Zealand and 83 runs against Pakistan in February 2025. The record of scoring the most runs after four ODIs is in the name of South Africa's Temba Bavuma. Bavuma amassed a total of 280 runs after his first four 50-over matches for the Proteas. The decision about Bengaluru's replacement for the ICC women's ODI World Cup is set to be finalised later this week. With the Karnataka State Cricket Association informing the Board of Control for Cricket in India of its inability to obtain the requisite clearances to stage matches, the International Cricket Council, in consultation with the tournament host BCCI, has been trying to finalise the replacement venue for the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. With the World Cup opener barely six weeks away, time is running out to finalise the logistics. The Hindu understands that Thiruvananthapuram has emerged as a front-runner, with Guwahati in contention to host additional matches. According to a source in the know of things, a formal announcement will be made 'in a couple of days'. With Bengaluru having been deemed unfit following the stampede outside the stadium a day after the Indian Premier League final in June, the World Cup matches, including the final on November 2, will have to be rescheduled.
