M-80 firecrackers are small enough to fit into the palm of your hand. They're a cylinder, typically red, with a long, green fuse coming out of the side, almost like bloated birthday candles. They don't look scary. But the firecrackers, which are illegal in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., packed a big enough punch Tuesday to smatter a ripe watermelon into indistinguishable chunks and dismember a plastic prop hand at a fireworks safety demonstration.
