Aimee Betro had intention to kill before flying to UK, detectives believe
Jurors at Birmingham Crown Court deliberated for almost 21 hours before finding Betro guilty of conspiracy to murder, possessing a self-loading pistol and a charge of fraudulently evading the prohibition on importing ammunition.
The childhood development and graphic design graduate, who denied all the charges, flew into Britain to take part in a plot orchestrated by co-conspirators Mohammed Nabil Nazir, 31, and Mohammed Aslam, 56, to shoot dead Aslat Mahumad following an altercation in a shop.
Betro, 45, from Wisconsin, was caught on CCTV as she tried to shoot Mr Ali, Mr Mahumad's son, in Measham Grove, Yardley, Birmingham, in September 2019.
Commenting on Betro's conviction, Mr Orencas said of the assassination attempt: 'Whether the slider is jammed or it's a rogue round, it has failed to discharge that firearm.'
Asked about Betro's use of false names to book herself into hotels and to buy a car before the assassination attempt, Mr Orencas said he believed Betro knew of the murder plot before she jetted in from the United States more than a fortnight beforehand.
The officer said: 'I think this is a carefully planned, persistent, murderous plot. It's unbelievable to me that that would be conceived without careful lengthy planning.'
But he said of the actual shooting bid: 'It's a brazen attempt. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of effort to avoid detection. I think she fell foul of a really slick, dynamic law enforcement operation over here.
'I don't know whether that was her perspective from America that that's how we operate – but (there is) zero tolerance around firearms criminality on these shores.'
Betro was convicted on 'overwhelming' evidence, the senior officer said, adding that she had 'a troublesome relationship with the truth' in giving her account of what happened.

Betro's use of a niqab to hide her face 'didn't work very well' as 'the footwear didn't change, phones didn't change' and various CCTV cameras caught her in the area of the shooting, Mr Orencas said.
'It was a fairly poor attempt (at disguise) and again, whether or not the attitude was that the British police wouldn't be up to it, I think she was fatally flawed, if that was ever the consideration in her mind,' Mr Orencas noted.
Thanking the Daily Mail for its investigation that tracked down Betro's hideout in Armenia in summer 2024, the detective chief inspector continued: 'There were parallel inquiries going on but, without a doubt, the Daily Mail were of great assistance.
'And I'll say thank you on record to the Daily Mail with regard to that.'
Mr Orencas added: 'I think the tenacity of the investigation team has been outstanding to the point where we had officers, that were coming towards the end of their service, retire and come back as civilian investigators.
'And they've stuck in right to the end because they were so passionate about getting justice, really, for the family, but the broader community in the West Midlands who simply won't tolerate firearms criminality.'

Alderman Brendan Reilly, who represents Chicago's 42nd ward that is home to the bean, told local media: 'I am happy to confirm that a man has not been trapped inside "Cloud Gate" (a.k.a "the Bean") for the past 21 years.' He said that while he appreciates a 'lighthearted parody as much as the next guy', the sheer number of calls his office has taken about the man in the Bean is preventing them from carrying out 'the real work we do for the 42nd Ward and City of Chicago.' Despite official protests, Chicagoans seem to be loving the stunt. Marisol Nuñez told Block Club Chicago after her video of the group went viral: 'It makes me happy [that] people find it funny and even add onto the joke.' The American fugitive Nicholas Rossi has been found guilty of rape charges that he faked his own death to avoid. Rossi, 38, who hid in Scotland under an assumed name, was convicted by a jury in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Wednesday of a crime he committed in 2008 against a former girlfriend. He attracted international attention during his lengthy battle against extradition to the United States. A woman who was dragged into a 'toxic' feud between Mark Latham and his ex Nathalie Matthews has revealed the stunning lengths a 'scorned' Matthews was prepared to go after accusing her of being 'in bed' with Latham. The Sydney woman, who the Daily Mail has chosen not to name, said Ms Matthews became 'absolutely wild' with rage after learning she had struck up a relationship with Latham before her own relationship with the politician fell apart. In a series of text messages obtained by the Daily Mail, Ms Matthews warned a close associate that she 'might tell a journo about' the woman, after recent allegations against Latham were made public. 'Why not? She was in bed with pig - get in the mud too,' she said. 'I don't believe her bulls***,' she wrote, adding: 'I am outing her.' After the woman was spotted at Latham's side at a racing event, she claimed Ms Matthews took to social media to question why a man with a 'beautiful young girlfriend' would choose to 'date an old wrinkly one'. On a separate occasion, she said Ms Matthews discovered a picture of Latham at the races alongside an 'unidentified blonde' and followed up with a post to Instagram with a caption along the lines of '#upgradeblonde'. The woman, who is married, told the Daily Mail that she was stunned to learn Ms Matthews, with whom she had never spoken, held any ill feelings towards her. . Behind the scenes, she was told Ms Matthew's had gone 'absolutely wild', demanding Latham name the mystery woman he had been spotted with at the races. 'Apparently, she went on and on and then he told her and she looked me up on social media and she then had my name in her head,' she said. 'She had it in for me and I don't know why... I was no threat to her, but she obviously thought I was.' Ms Matthews is seeking an AVO against Latham after alleging he inflicted a 'sustained pattern' of psychological, financial and emotional abuse against her. The former federal Labor leader has denied all abuse claims made by Ms Matthews, alleging the pair's relationship was consensual. The woman claimed Ms Matthews' ire only grew when she went through Latham's phone and found some innocent pictures of the pair attending lunch together. 'I think she blew it out of proportion. I don't know if he made it out that I was more of a threat than I was, I don't know,' she said. The unnamed woman recalled meeting Latham at a racing event in August last year and, after learning who he was, became 'star-struck'. She said the politician was 'quite persistent' in getting her number and she soon began attending regular lunches with him over the next few months. 'Look, I did go to the Fullerton (hotel) but it wasn't what it seems... And there was certainly no defecating either,' she added. Among the accusations levelled against Latham in her AVO application to the NSW Local Court, Ms Matthews alleged he defecated on her before sex and refused to let her wash. In his affidavit, Latham accepted he did perform the vile sex act on Ms Matthews on one occasion but said he only did it 'because it turned her on'. The second woman said her relationship with Latham was a 'confidante kind of companionship', adding the pair would often discuss Latham's frustrations with Ms Matthews, whose work often took her abroad. 'I could see there were a lot of problems in that relationship,' she said, adding Latham would tell her 'everything'. 'He longed for a normal relationship… he said that they had an open arrangement because she had people in Dubai, and that she came and went as she pleased and he wasn't happy with that,' she said. The woman decided to cut ties with Latham a few months into their relationship after sensing she had become a pawn in a 'toxic game'. 'I was starting to get feelings back, during the months we were having lunch, and I didn't want to go when I realised what was going on with him and her, (so) I ended it,' she said. 'I said: 'Look, I can't keep, I don't want to be in the middle of your guys' games' and so we stopped having lunch.' She added: 'They obviously had a very toxic game going on.'
