More ticks carrying Lyme disease bacteria in pheasant areas

New research has revealed that ticks are more likely to carry the bacteria that causes Lyme disease in areas where pheasants are released.
The research was carried out by the University of Exeter and the UK Health Security Agency, which subsequently published the study titled 'The release of non-native gamebirds is associated with amplified zoonotic disease risk' in the journal Ecology Letters recently.
According to Bird Watch Ireland, pheasants are not native to Ireland or the UK, but rather to Asia, where they were imported from and first introduced here as game birds in the 16th century by the Normans.

Researchers from the University of Exeter have claimed that approximately 47 million pheasants are released into the wild in the UK each year for recreational shooting.
To conduct the research, scientists at the university studied ticks in 25 woodland areas in south-west England where pheasants were released and 25 nearby control sites where no pheasants were released.
They discovered that Borrelia spp. – the bacteria that causes Lyme disease – was almost 2.5 times more prevalent in ticks in the pheasant-release areas compared to the control areas.
Head researcher from the Centre for Ecology and Conservation on Exeter's Penryn Campus in Cornwall, Emile Michels said: 'Borrelia bacteria can live in a wide range of hosts, including pheasants, wild birds and mammals and humans.
'Pheasants are known to be competent hosts of Borrelia spp, meaning they have a relatively high likelihood of contracting and retransmitting the bacteria.
'More research is needed, but our findings suggest there may be an increased risk of potential exposure to Borrelia-infected ticks for people, such as gamekeepers, who work in woodlands where pheasants are released in numbers.'
According to researchers, the control sites in the study were 1-2km from the pheasant-release sites, so more research would be required to see if Borrelia spp in ticks declines further at greater distances.
Researchers tested ticks at different life stages, nymphs and adults, and found that, overall, the proportion containing Borrelia spp was 7.8% in pheasant-release woodlands, and 3.2% where pheasants were not released.
University of Exeter professor, Dr. Barbara Tschirren said: 'Our findings are evidence of spillback, where non-native species increase the prevalence of native pathogens. This can be an important route for the emergence of zoonoses (diseases that animals can give to humans).'
Head of the Medical Entomology and Zoonoses Ecology team at UKHSA, Dr. Jolyon Medlock also commented on the study:
'While we have observed an increase in the bacteria that can cause Lyme disease in ticks, we do not have data on the resulting impact on human health, including evidence of Lyme infection.
'Following these findings, we continue to work with academic partners to better understand what drives Borrelia transmission, including the roles of climate and environmental change.'
Lyme disease
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be spread to humans by infected ticks. According to the HSE, it is usually easier to treat if it is diagnosed early.
According to the Annual Infectious Disease Report, published by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre in conjunction with the HSE on April 28, 2025, seven cases of Lyme disease were diagnosed in Ireland last year, up one from the six reported in 2023.
The HSE has also indicated that about 5% of ticks in Ireland are thought to carry Lyme disease bacteria.
It has urged individuals to remove ticks as soon as possible, explaining that Lyme disease can be prevented if infected ticks are removed within 36 hours of embedding themselves in a person.
It published three steps to remove a tick safely, which included:
Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible; Slowly pull upwards, taking care not to squeeze or crush the tick – dispose of it carefully; Clean the bite with antiseptic or soap and water.

That's how long Meath native Anne-Marie has been living and dealing with the debilitating effects of chronic Lyme disease, the symptoms of which have robbed her of so much of who she used to be. Now though, they are hoping that a GoFundMe page set up to help her receive promising – albeit expensive – treatment at the Klinik St Georg in Germany. This was described by Daire as 'the only chance to get some of her [Anne-Marie's] life back.' A lover of all things outdoorsy and described by Daire as being in the 'prime of her life' at 33, Anne-Marie would once have thought nothing of heading off up Ireland's highest mountain, Carrauntoohil, if the mood took her. She was trained in social care and was heavily involved in supporting women and children fleeing domestic violence, survivors of the Magdalene laundries, and children with special needs. Follow Independent Meath on Facebook Now though, the 36-year-old struggles to make to it the end of her street – approximately a 200-metre distance – and even if she does, the only reward for her efforts is a week spent languishing in bed, drained by fatigue. Daire added that she is now almost fully dependent on him and others for even the most basic of needs, including showering and eating. It was in February of 2022 that Anne-Marie first began to feel unwell, eventually becoming bedbound and barely able to muster enough strength to eat or even speak. Unable to sleep for more than a few hours, even with the help of medication, her weight dropped to a mere 48kg, just 7.5 stones. What followed was three years of the couple going to see countless specialists including cardiologists, neurologists, immunologists, infectious disease specialists, gastroenterologists, sleep and respiratory experts, and many more. As well as this, Daire said that she became so frail she didn't have the strength to put a jumper on herself or pull the blankets up over herself. She had severe light and sound sensitivity and has had to spend most days and nights in a dark room with noise-cancelling headphones and an eye mask on, in pain, and unable to sleep. Having exhausted all of the treatment options available here in Ireland, the couple have moved back in with their parents in an effort to save money and have been forced to turn to crowdfunding to help raise enough money to get Anne-Marie the potentially life-saving treatment at a prestigious clinic in Germany. Daire, also a Meath native, spoke to the Irish Independent this week about the fundraiser – it currently sits at just over €26k raised of their target amount of €62k – and explained, in heartbreaking fashion, just exactly what this disease has cost them both. "It [Anne-Marie's illness] is our everything. It's something that we manage sometimes from hour to hour, day to day. "The disease takes everything from you. Anne-Marie was a very active person before all this. Down in Killarney, we used to love hiking and we would have lived right next to one of the access points to Carrauntoohil. We'd have been up there any time the sun was shining,' he said. "Now though, the simple act of walking to the top of the street which is 200 metres maybe, this will leave her in bed for the rest of the week,' he continued. Getting sick right at the tail end of COVID, Daire said, was possibly the worst timing as he believes that early Lyme disease symptoms were crucially missed by medical professionals here in Ireland. "I think the first 14 months were probably the hardest. We just didn't have a clue, we were grasping at straws and relying on a system that doesn't know this disease well and it was also at a time, in the country, when the health service was firefighting the last of the bad COVID waves." "To be sick in that climate, we were being told that some of the more ambiguous symptoms of Lyme were probably just COVID and we ended up in this misdiagnosis loop and you start losing time,' he said. With almost half of the money now raised from the fundraiser, Daire is, thanks to talking to others who have been through the treatment in the clinic that Anne-Marie can get back to something resembling her normal life. "There's a high percentage of success there. The clinic has some people who don't respond but we've spoken to quite a few Irish people who have been there. One of them actually was a young lady from Kerry, Karen O'Shea. She went over there to the clinic in a wheelchair and after the treatment, she was able to walk onto her flight. It was a huge night and day turnaround for her." "A lot of the patients from the clinic that we've spoken to are all in the same boat. They might not have the full lease of life that they had before but at least they are no longer constrained/stuck in their bedrooms or prisoners in their own home." The treatment, he says, will be intensive. "They will give the person a triple course of IV antibiotics on the week leading up to a hypothermia session where they'll then put the person under anesthetic before bringing their core temperature up to 42 degrees. This is right on the threshold of what the human body can tolerate. They'll keep it at this temperature for multiple hours with the idea being that the heat is able to access places that the antibiotics can't go to and that the Lyme likes to hide in." In total, the in-patient treatment in the clinic will be five weeks long and there will be six months of follow-up after this when Anne-Marie is at home. You should also be using insect repellent containing DEET on your clothes and skin, and wearing light coloured clothing so you can spot a tick easily. Also stick to paths where possible when you're out walking. How can I remove a tick safely? To remove a tick safely: Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick-removal tool. Just a tick — take time to find out about Lyme disease

People enjoying outdoor activities during the June bank holiday are being advised to take precautions against tick bites which could lead them to contracting Lyme disease. Ticks are most active during the warmer months of summer and autumn and are often found in areas with high grass, woodland and sand dunes. Lyme disease is spread through a bite from an infected tick on a person's skin. Symptoms include red rash, fever, headache and fatigue. And, chances are, they'll have you bitten before you see them. The HSE points out that a tick can cause Lyme disease in humans after it has bitten an infected animal. According to Professor Jack Lambert, a Dublin-based infectious disease consultant, between 5% and 15% of ticks are carriers and many people may not know they have Lyme disease which, he said, is poorly understood and poorly recognised here. We knew the tick by its Irish name, 'sceartán', and have good reason to remember this little bloodsucker from bites received, almost daily, during childhood days roaming the fields in summertime. It's always interesting to refer to the renowned Irish-English dictionary compiled by the distinguished Fr Patrick Dinneen (An Duinnineach), well over a century ago. Not alone did he give an exact translation of a word, he often provided numerous, detailed definitions as well… some strange or quirky, but always descriptive and even amusing at times. The scholar-priest, who was born, in 1860, into 10 hungry acres in the shadows of the Paps Mountains, on the Cork-Kerry border, defined a 'sceartán' as follows: 'A parasitical insect, a bug, a crab louse, a flesh worm, an insect found in healthy sheep, dogs etc." That's quite comprehensive. No mention of deer, however, which many people now link to the spread of Lyme disease — understandably so due to the massive growth of the national deer population. Deer were not nearly as numerous in Fr Dinneen's lifetime. To prevent bites, people are recommended to wear long-sleeved shirts, and long pants, which should be tucked into socks, when outdoors; and to use insect repellent. If a tick is removed within the first number of hours, the risk of infection is very low. The entire tick, including its mouthparts which might break off, should be removed with a tweezers by gripping it close to the skin. The skin where the tick was found should then be washed with soap and water and the area checked over the next few weeks for swelling or redness. Image: It's also wise to check your body for bites. If you find a tick, the advice is to remove it with a tweezers, avoiding squeezing, or crushing it. The HSE urges people to stick to paths, where possible, and to wear light-coloured clothing so that ticks easier to spot and brush off. Because of climate change and rising temperatures, Asian and north African ticks are moving towards Europe. And, though no new species have been reported in Ireland in recent years, existing species are becoming more prevalent, thriving in warmer, humid conditions.
