Modesto chooses downtown area as future site of pro soccer stadium
The city has been deep in negotiations with the United Soccer League, working to bring both men's and women's teams to town.
City leaders have spent weeks hosting workshops and listening sessions trying to narrow down a new stadium site between the two locations. But in the end, they opted for both.
This week, the Modesto City Council unanimously voted to designate downtown as the future site of a professional soccer stadium. The city also voted to develop the land on Modesto's West End Golf Course, turning it into a practice and tournament facility.
The combined project is estimated to cost nearly $188 million, with around $125 million for construction of the downtown stadium and another $62 million for land acquisition and parking.
"This is about making our downtown a true gathering place," Mayor Sue Zwahlen said. "We already have a vibrant city center, and this would take it to the next level."
The proposal also includes plans to build a hotel and nearly 940 residential units, more than 230 of them affordable, near the West Modesto facility.
The city entered a formal negotiation period with the USL last September. The agreement gives both parties until this fall to finalize the deal.
If approved, the stadium would replace Modesto Centre Plaza, a longtime downtown fixture.

Lions put CB Ennis Rakestraw on IR with season-ending shoulder injury and sign TE Steven Stilianos.
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions have placed cornerback Ennis Rakestraw on injured reserve with a season-ending shoulder injury and signed tight end Steven Stilianos. Detroit made the moves Thursday after coach Dan Campbell lamented that Rakestraw was hurt a year after injuries limited him to eight games as a rookie. 'You hate it for the kid,' Campbell said earlier this week. 'It's not his fault, just one of those tough deals. All you can do is try to get it better and rehab, come back stronger and move on.' Detroit drafted the former Missouri star in the second round last year and his season ended in mid-November after various ailments kept him off the field. Stilianos provides depth at tight end for exhibition games, limiting snaps for starter Sam LaPorta and veteran backups Brock Wright and Shane Zylstra. Rakestraw played when the Lions opened the preseason with a 34-7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Detroit plays the Atlanta Falcons on Friday night in its second of four exhibition games. ___ AP NFL:

Micah Parsons remains in camp despite not attending practice
Micah Parsons didn't show up to watch the Cowboys practice for the first time in training camp. That caused a stir, and the fact that owner Jerry Jones also wasn't at Thursday's practice caused a bigger stir. Alas, there is nothing to see here. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones told reporters after practice that Parsons remains in training camp, and two sources told Jane Slater of NFL Media that "nothing is happening" with negotiations behind the scenes. Parsons showed up to training camp on time, but he has not participated in any of the practices as he awaits a contract extension. The sides are in a stalemate, with the Cowboys' season opener four weeks from today. Now that he's in camp, Parsons essentially is stuck. According to the NFL's Constitution and Bylaws, if a player leaves the team during training camp or the regular season, he has five days to return. If he doesn't, the team can place the player on its reserve list as a retired player. And if that happens under those specific circumstances, the player cannot play again that year for any team. His contract would toll. Both sides will have a big decision to make if Parsons isn't under contract before the start of the season. The Cowboys, though, have a recent history of completing contract extensions at the 11th hour, so to speak. Jones said earlier this week that he is "absolutely not" confident Parsons will play in the season opener.
