Canucks schedule: No mulligans allowed after horrible home-ice record last season
It's not the end of the world if you win or lose your NHL home-opener because there is always ample time to right the wrongs.
However, if you're the Vancouver Canucks with lingering memories of blowing two big leads in a 6-5 overtime loss to the Calgary Flames at Rogers Arena to commence a troubled 2024-2025 campaign, their Oct. 9 curtain-raiser in Vancouver this season against those same Flames should be treated like a playoff game.
It has come to this in an alienated market where getting back to the playoffs is like conquering the Grouse Grind with consistent and strong strides. It's exhausting but exhilarating if you ascend without losing balance or taking a tumble.
The Canucks stumbled out of the gate last season at Rogers Arena. They were 3-5-3 after 11 dates, won two straight on just two occasions, and finished at 17-16-8. Put it this way. Minnesota and St.Louis claimed the final two wildcard playoff berths because of 23-13-5 and 24-14-3 home marks respectively.
Seven more points would have got the Canucks to the postseason. And whether that came from overtime points with a league-worst 10-14 mark, or being harder to play against at home, it brought a paltry 23rd-ranked offence into focus. It overshadowed a third-rated penalty kill and strong 21-14-6 road record.
Of course, a new season brings new hope. That's what the faithful cling to and pay for.
A healthy Thatcher Demko and Kevin Lankinen should form a formidable goaltending tandem. The back end is a lot better than a year ago when it bled odd-man rushes and turnovers. The Canucks now defend better down low and spend less time in their own zone. And with a healthy captain Quinn Hughes as the get-out-of-jail-free card, and packing an added offensive arsenal, there's reason for hope.
The biggest intrigue comes up front in the top-six mix potential.
The trade play for left winger Evander Kane, who turns 34 on Aug. 2, could pay dividends because he's healthy, in a contract year, returning home, and motivated to extend his career. The Canucks took on the $5.12 million US remaining on his deal and gave up a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft to the Edmonton Oilers. Kane has potential to hit 30 goals for the third time in his career.
Kane's arrival and Brock Boeser's pivot back from free agency sets the Canucks up for better balance and production in their top two lines. Boeser, 28, got a seven-year, $50.75-million extension to put his mind at ease, and an incentive to get this game back to 30 goals and potentially more.
Jake DeBrusk is coming off a career 28-goal season, which included 14 on the power play to rank fifth overall, and the burning question is which left winger works best for struggling Elias Pettersson. Kane to drive play and open up space, or DeBrusk for big down-low presence?
The Canucks still have a riddle in the middle after losing Pius Suter to free agency. The can't rely on Pettersson and Filip Chytil to carry the load, and need support via a trade, which could see a roster player or players depart, depending on the roster addition.
MUST-SEE HOME GAMES:
Oct. 25: Reigning Calder Trophy winner Lane Hutson and the vastly improved Montreal Canadiens make their only trip in a 4 p.m. clash.
Oct. 28: J.T. Miller makes his return to Vancouver after being dealt to the New York Rangers in a multi-player deal Jan. 31. The fans might still chant his name. At his best, he was dynamo. A 7 p.m. tilt.
Nov. 11: Jonathan Toews, 37, returns in a one-year deal with the Winnipeg Jets. The legendary Chicago Blackhawks centre has battled numerous ailments — including long-COVID effects — and hasn't played since April 13, 2023. It's a 7 p.m. start.
Jan. 21: Ageless Alex Ovechkin, 39, is the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer with 897 career regular-season tallies with the Washington Capitals. It's a 7 p.m. contest.
March 17: Two-time defending Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers make their lone trip to the West Coast to hone their game for a three-peat title quest in a big 7 p.m. tilt.
NOTES OF NOTE:
Crazy Eights: Vancouver has two eight-game home-stands. The first starts Jan.17 against Edmonton and concludes Jan. 31 against Toronto. The second runs March 2 against Dallas through to March 26 against Los Angeles.
Backstreet's Back (to back): The Canucks have 14 sets of back-to-back games, including three in each of November, December, and January, as well as two in October and April, and one in March.
Hitting the Road: The team's longest road trip is six games, spanning Jan. 6-15. The Canucks make stops in Buffalo, Detroit, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Columbus.
Weekly Planner: The breakdown by day of the week is as follows:
Monday – 12
Tuesday – 13
Wednesday – 7
Thursday – 15
Friday – 8
Saturday – 19
Sunday – 8
Olympic Return: The schedule pauses Feb. 6-24 as players travel to Italy for 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. Quinn Hughes (USA) and Teddy Blueger (Latvia) have been named to preliminary rosters.

Was MLS Right To Suspend Lionel Messi For Missing The All-Star Game?
HARRISON, NEW JERSEY - JULY 19: Lionel Messi #10 of Inter Miami looks on during the second half ... More against the New York Red Bulls at Sports Illustrated Stadium on July 19, 2025 in Harrison, New Jersey. (Photo by) Lionel Messi caused a stir in Major League Soccer this week when he failed to appear for the league's annual All-Star game and was suspended for Inter Miami's next league game as a result. Messi and his Inter Miami teammate Jordi Alba were absent for the event, having originally been selected for the MLS All-Star team for a game to face off against counterparts from Mexico's Liga MX. In a press conference on Friday, Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas said the decision for Messi and Alba not to play in the All-Star exhibition match was made by the club. This forced MLS to enforce its rule that any All-Star player who fails to participate in the game 'without prior approval from the league' will be suspended for their team's next match. A statement from MLS, released on Friday evening, read: 'Inter Miami CF's Jordi Alba and Lionel Messi will be unavailable for the club's match against FC Cincinnati on Saturday, July 26, due to their absence at this week's Major League Soccer All-Star Game. 'Per league rules, any player who does not participate in the All-Star game without prior approval from the league is ineligible to compete in their club's next match.' The press conference from Jorge Mas came shortly after, and further stoked the fires of this debate around the All-Star game and Messi's involvement, or lack of. Was Messi Right To Miss The All-Star Game? All-Star games are an American sporting tradition, but sometimes, in soccer, which brings sporting cultures from around the world to US shores, there is confusion around what the game is actually for, who it benefits, and if it is necessary. This is especially the case now that the number of games players are being asked to play is regularly increasing due to participating in domestic football, international football, and the introduction of new, expanded tournaments like FIFA's Club World Cup and the Leagues Cup in MLS and Liga MX. Messi and Miami naturally prioritised the Club World Cup at that time, and MLS will have wanted him to, as the league hoped for a good showing on the international stage. Inter Miami delivered this by reaching the Club World Cup knockout stages. The Club World Cup is a tournament unlike any other, so you could argue there should be a place for such a diverse, competitive global soccer festival in the calendar. When it comes the the All-Star game, and indeed the Leagues Cup, they can feel like unnecessary additional games in the middle of the season. Inter Miami have now prioritised an MLS regular season game, and everything that comes with that, over an All-Star exhibition. What if Messi played in the All-Star game and got injured? That wouldn't have been good for the league either. Ultimately, you can understand why Inter Miami decided Messi and Alba should skip the game, but you can also understand why others in MLS will question why Miami at times appears to view itself and its players as above the rest of the league. But maybe it is also making some important points. CINCINNATI, OHIO - JULY 16: Lionel Messi #10 of Inter Miami CF and teammate Jordi Alba #18 enter the ... More pitch for the second half during the MLS match between FC Cincinnati and Inter Miami CF at TQL Stadium on July 16, 2025 in Cincinnati, Ohio. (Photo by) Should MLS Have Suspended Messi? This is an easier one to answer. If the rule is in place, then it should be applied. If anything, it was surprising that the decision to suspend Messi and Alba for the game against FC Cincinnati was made so late, which suggests there might have been some doubt that it would be applied, but eventually the right decision was made. Messi is an obvious star of the league and of the sport in the United States, but shouldn't be above it. You can argue whether the rule should exist in the first place, but if it is there, it should be applied. Messi has already been given special treatment by the league in that he has not been made as accessible to the media as other players are, but it is important that the league treat Messi the same way they would any other player in the interests of consistency and fairness. What Will It Mean For The Supporters' Shield Inter Miami's game against FC Cincinnati is an important game in the race for the 2025 Supporters' Shield, which is awarded to the team that finishes top of the overall MLS standings at the end of the regular season. Cincinnati currently sits top of the standings, and was helped by a recent 3-0 home victory against an Inter Miami team that did feature Messi when the teams met just over a week ago. Inter Miami is playing catch-up following the Club World Cup and has several games in hand, and the schedule threw up an immediate chance to get revenge. Cincinnati's own star player, Evander, who did attend the All-Star event, was the standout player in that previous game and scored two of the goals in the 3-0 win. He'll be present, and Messi won't, which means their stars' no-show at the All-Star match puts Inter Miami at a disadvantage in this important regular-season game. Messi's absence from the All-Star game has certainly caused a stir and brought attention that the league might not otherwise have had at this time. Whether this kind of attention around something fairly trivial and very specific to US sports culture is good or bad for the MLS is up for debate. It could be said that Messi and Miami made the right decision for him to miss the All-Star game, and the league made the right decision to suspend him as a result, but now that all of this has played out, maybe the whole idea of a mid-season All-Star game needs to be revisited.

'We've got a long way to go': Public reaction grows after Canada's former World Junior Hockey players acquitted of sexual assault
Five members of Canada's 2018 world junior team charged with sexual assault were acquitted, but they likely won't find themselves back in the NHL anytime soon Ont-Hockey Canada-Sexual Assault 20250724 The verdict of a widely publicized sexual assault trial involving five former NHL players has ignited a complex national conversation with Canadians weighing the outcome through lenses of accountability, justice and hockey's cultural grip. Members of Canada's World Junior Hockey squad — Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Alex Formenton, Cal Foote, and Dillon Dube — were charged with sexually assaulting E.M., a woman whose identity is protected under a standard publication ban, in a hotel room in 2018 while the team was gathering to celebrate its gold medal win months before. On Thursday, following eight weeks of trial, Ontario Superior Court justice Maria Carroccia found all of the accused men not guilty on all charges. Judge did not find complainant's evidence to be 'credible or reliable' As part of her judgment on Thursday, Justice Carroccia stated that she found the evidence submitted by the prosecution to be unreliable, before going ahead and sharing the reasoning behind her decision. Going through each defendant one-by-one, Justice Carroccia said the Crown had failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the complainant in the case, E.M., had not given consent. Hour-after-hour on Thursday, Justice Carroccia laid out a number of issues she found with the evidence and E.M's "reliability and credibility." Carroccia noted several "gaps in E.M.'s memory and discrepancies between her statements to London police and her civil settlement in 2022 compared to her recollections under cross-examination," according to the CBC. Justice Carroccia also told the court that the complainant 'exaggerated her intoxication' on the night the alleged acts took place, while rejecting the Crown's argument that E.M. had only participated in the sexual because she was afraid of the group of men in the hotel room. 'We've got a long way to go': Canadians react to Justice Carroccia's ruling Following the acquittal of each former NHLer, many social media users expressed their dissatisfaction with the verdict, while offering support to E.M. Outside the courthouse in London, Ont., on Thursday, Lawyer Karen Bellehumeur told reporters her client, E.M., faced "insulting mocking and unfair treatment" during cross-examination as she went on to reflect on the judgment. 'She's obviously very disappointed with the verdict and very disappointed with her Honour's assessment of her honesty and reliability' said Bellehumeur. Where does the NHL stand on the players' future in the league? Per insider John Shannon, it's still unknown whether the five acquitted players will ever be allowed to make their way back to the NHL, despite being found innocent by Justice Carroccia. The NHL released a statement confirming Shannon's report: "The allegations made in this case, even if not determined to have been criminal, were very disturbing and the behaviour at issue was unacceptable. We will be reviewing and considering the judge's findings. While we conduct that analysis and determine next steps, the players charged in this case are ineligible to play in the league." Crown has 30 days to appeal the verdict Following Thursday's verdict, assistant Crown attorney Meaghan Cunningham spoke to reporters outside the courthouse as supporters of E.M. cheered. 'A successful prosecution is not measured solely by whether or not there are guilty verdicts at the end,' Cunningham said. Cunningham added the Crown will 'carefully review' Carroccia's decisions but won't comment further because "this case is still within the appeal period."

Russell Wilson joined Gabe Davis at dinner during New York Giants visit
Throughout free agency and the draft, one of the main focuses for the New York Giants has been ensuring that there are enough skill players for Russell Wilson to throw the ball to this fall. Malik Nabers, Wan'Dale Robinson, and Darius Slayton are the sure starters in 2025, but after that, it gets a little murky. In May, the Giants hosted former Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Gabe Davis for a visit. It wasn't a traditional free-agent visit, but more of a "let's see where you're at" visit focused on medical evaluations and system familiarity. Davis appeared on the Up & Adams Show on Thursday, and Davis shared some details on that visit. "It was great, Chad (Hall), Dabes, Shea (Tierney), all those, Joe (Schoen), I mean, it was awesome," Davis said. "Going out to New York and seeing those guys and talking with them. Russ, Russ came to dinner, that was dope, you know, to have Russell Wilson there. That was pretty sick. He's a legend." Davis was drafted in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft by the Buffalo Bills. He played there, catching passes from Josh Allen, until his rookie contract expired and he signed a one-year deal with the Jags. Through 72 games over four seasons, Davis has recorded 183 passes for 2,969 yards and 29 touchdowns with four fumbles. He also has postseason experience, which is crucial to the locker room. In seven postseason games, Davis has 22 receptions for 474 yards and six touchdowns with zero fumbles. Davis currently remains a free agent, but as camp continues, that could change.
