Rescued foreigners were promised jobs
GEORGE TOWN: The three foreign men rescued from wrongful confinement during a police raid on an apartment here on Tuesday had been promised employment — but were never given jobs.
Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad told the New Straits Times that the victims had been held for periods ranging from four months to a year.
"Yes, their legs were chained, but not around the clock. There were times when the caretaker removed the chains upon request.
"They also remained silent throughout their confinement, which is why neighbours were completely unaware of the situation," he said.
Rozak added that one of the men had secretly hidden a mobile phone and managed to contact a relative in Indonesia for help — a move that led to their rescue.
He said investigations were ongoing.
The victims — aged between 28 and 52 — were found in good health and rescued following a report lodged by a 47-year-old foreigner, who claimed his friends were being held against their will.
The raid, conducted on Tuesday, led to the arrest of three Malaysian men aged between 40 and 56, along with a 40-year-old foreign woman believed to have been guarding the victims.
Rozak said that two of the suspects were expected to be charged in court tomorrow.
Meanwhile, residents at the apartment complex said they were shocked to learn about the incident.
Some, who spoke to the NST on condition of anonymity, said they had no idea anyone was being held captive.
A resident living a few floors above the unit said there was nothing unusual to indicate something was wrong.
"We didn't hear anything suspicious — no shouting or signs of distress.
"We only found out what happened when we saw it on social media," he said.
Another resident, who lives just a few doors away, said they only realised something was amiss when police officers arrived on Tuesday afternoon.

Court fines Singaporean for road rage, spitting incident
Day in court: Police officers escorting Cheng at the Magistrate's Court in Johor Baru. JOHOR BARU: A Singaporean man was fined RM9,100 by a Magistrate's Court here for damaging a Malaysian man's car and spitting in the driver's face during a road rage incident. Human resources manager Cheng Kuan Poh, 40, pleaded guilty to the two offences, which were heard by Magistrate A. Shaarmini yesterday. In the first charge, he was accused of committing mischief by damaging Ng Yeow Meng's Malaysian-registered car at Jalan Sutera Tanjung 8/4, Taman Sutera Utama, here, at 2.39pm on Saturday. Cheng was also charged with insulting the modesty of 32-year-old Ng by way of spitting on his face at the same place and time. The two charges were framed under Section 426 and Section 509 of the Penal Code respectively. Cheng said he understood the charges and punishment, which were read to him in Mandarin. His lawyer Norfarahin Mohd Yazid asked the court for a lower fine, noting that he has to take care of his sick parents, who are also bedridden. 'He earns S$2,000 (RM6,595) as a human resources manager and this is his first offence,' she said. The magistrate then ordered Cheng to pay a fine of RM4,300 in default six months' jail and RM4,800 in default six months' jail for the first and second charges respectively. Earlier, before entering the courtroom, Cheng, who wore a face mask, stopped in his tracks at the sight of media members and turned away while saying, 'I don't want, I don't want.' The court police officers then tugged him on the arm and nudged him forward to enter the courtroom. It was reported that Johor Baru North OCPD Asst Comm Balveer Singh said the Singaporean was detained on Sunday to assist in the investigation after a video of an altercation between two men outside a car went viral on social media. The video, recorded by a woman seated inside the vehicle, showed the Singaporean shouting at them and repeatedly kicking the car, damaging it.

Immigration swoops on ‘Dugem' nightspot packed with foreigners in Pudu and callgirls hotspot in Klang
KUALA LUMPUR: The Immigration Department (JIM) detained 188 illegal immigrants while they were mesmerised with 'Dugem', or thumping Indonesian techno-dance music that has invaded the Malaysian scene, in a raid on a nightspot in Pudu here at 2 am on Wednesday (yesterday). JIM said a total of 310 patrons comprising 128 foreign men and 116 foreign women and 66 local citizens were checked, leading to the detention of 106 Indonesian men and 79 women, one Cambodian man and woman and one Nepalese man, all aged between 21 and 35 years old, for offences including overstaying and lacking valid travel documents. The JIM statement said all the foreigners were detained under Section 51(5)(b) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and placed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Lenggeng immigration depots for further investigations and action. In the special night operation enforced by 129 immigration officers and 11 National Registration Department officers, eight summonses were also issued against the supervisor and caretaker of the nightspot as well as a woman deejay. According to the statement, the centre opens for business from 11 pm to 5 am while local and foreign DJs play hypnotic Dugem music to keep foreign patrons engrossed. In KLANG, the Selangor Immigration Department (JIM) arrested 12 foreigners during a raid on an entertainment centre believed to be a transit point for guest relations officers (GRO) in Bandar Bukit Tinggi here through Op Gegar last night. Selangor JIM director Khairrul Aminus Kamaruddin said those arrested in the raid that began at 9.30 pm consisted of seven Cambodian women, two Vietnamese and one Thai, aged between 21 and 35, who were suspected of offering sexual services to customers in Klang. He said two men working as bartenders, a Pakistani and a Vietnamese, were also nabbed. 'Their modus operandi is for negotiations initiated on social media before meeting customers at the nightspot and after an agreement is reached, GROs will be taken to hotels for a fee of between RM150 and RM300 per hour,' he said after the operation ended at midnight yesterday. Khairrul Aminus said the cases are being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 as well as Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963 for misusing social visit passes. He said the raid involved 21 officers and all detainees were taken to the Selangor Immigration Office for further action. In a separate case, Khairrul Aminus said four illegal immigrants (PATI) including a married couple with a one-year-old boy were arrested under Op Sapu at 10.20 pm at a rented house in Taman Klang Jaya. He said the raid follows complaints about the noisy house being used as a transit point for foreigners.
