NBC News12 hours ago
If you own an iPhone, Apple makes some of the best smartwatches you can get. We've tested and reviewed many of them over the years — they have a great mix of smart, fitness and health features that make them useful and convenient for all kinds of people. The most affordable model, the Apple Watch SE (2nd Gen), is back on sale for 32% off, matching the lowest price we've seen all year. Apple Watch SE (2nd Gen) deal The Apple Watch SE costs much less than the Apple Watch Series 10 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, but has most of the brand's best features, including nearly identical sleep and fitness tracking tools. You can use the Apple Health and Apple Fitness app to view your sleep stats, heart rate, steps and previous exercises. The watch syncs easily to your iPhone, and can send texts and make requests using Siri and your voice. It has up to 18 hours of battery life, which isn't great, so I usually charge my Apple Watch every morning. You can get it with all kinds of different watch bands, but this deal comes with either the Sport Band or Sport Loop. Want more from NBC Select? No, Vine isn't Coming Back

This story was originally published on Social Media Today. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Social Media Today newsletter. So Vine isn't really coming back after all. As you may recall, a couple of weeks back, X owner Elon Musk announced that X was planning to bring back Vine, but in AI form. At the time, I speculated that this was actually about xAI's new 'Imagine' text-to-video tool, which is currently in Beta testing among selected X Premium users. And now, Elon has confirmed this, posting that: So as Musk says, X isn't bringing back Vine, the app. But instead, in his view at least, the new Grok Imagine functionality is 'AI Vine,' and will provide similar functionality and engagement as Vine did in the past. But it won't. I mean, sure, there's going to be a new influx of AI-generated video on X, which will be largely dominated by right-wing memes (as this is the primary audience that can currently access the option, being paying X Premium users). But it's nothing like Vine, which was TikTok before TikTok, providing an endless, full-screen, vertically-aligned feed of short-form video clips, which helped to kickstart the careers of many now-established online creators. Vine, as many have noted, was really the beginning of the short-form video trend. But without a dedicated app and presentation format, and without providing a stream of super short-form content (Vines were originally only 6-seconds long), this will be nothing like what Vine was. Instead, it's just going to be more weird AI-generated video clips posted to X, of which some will be good, some will be interesting. And a lot will be rubbish. Which, I guess, maybe does actually replicate what Vine had been, but the user experience and engagement process is not the same. And we've already got this in TikTok and via Reels. AI-generated clips have been gradually infiltrating these platforms as well, so enabling the same functionality on X likely won't have a major impact. So, sorry to burst your bubble Vine fans, but Vine isn't coming back. All that's happening is that random AI clips will now be filtering through your X feed. Though as Elon also notes, they are working to restore the Vine video archive. So you can check out videos from ten years ago. Maybe find some classics. But again, this is not the return of Vine, but a re-angling of what Vine kind of was, in order to promote xAI's latest tool. X hasn't announced plans for a broader roll-out of its 'Imagine' text-to-video tools as yet. Sign in to access your portfolio

Elon Musk says he's bringing back Vine's archive

Elon Musk says he's bringing back Vine — sort of. The X owner announced over the weekend that the company discovered the video archive for the popular short-form video app, thought to have been deleted, and is working to restore user access. Vine — something of a precursor to today's TikTok, but with only six-second-long looping videos — was acquired by Twitter back in October 2012 for $30 million to expand the social media platform's video ambitions. Unfortunately for Vine creators and fans, the company fumbled the app's potential and decided to shut down Vine in 2016 by limiting all new uploads. The following year, it was fully discontinued, though a user archive remained for a time. Despite no longer having an App Store presence, Vine still has a place in the internet's collective cultural consciousness. Through online compilations of the best Vines uploaded to YouTube, and through the careers of numerous creators who got their start on Vine, the company lives on to some extent, and its content continues to be discovered by new generations. Musk himself seemed interested in bringing back Vine after acquiring Twitter in October 2022. In a poll posted on the social media app, he asked Twitter's users, 'Bring back Vine?' to which nearly 70% responded 'yes.' Axios reported at the time that Twitter had devoted some engineers to working on the Vine reboot, but nothing ever came of it. It's unclear whether Musk has any ambitions for Vine beyond getting its archive back online, however. In the same post about restoring Vine, he also touted that Grok's new video-creation feature, Grok Imagine, also available to X Premium+ subscribers, is 'AI Vine.' That suggests that his interests in video creation no longer lie with human creativity, but in human-directed AI prompting. Whether or not Musk will actually deliver on the promise remains to be seen, as the X post could have just been another way to draw attention to Grok AI, rather than being representative of a real effort inside the company to make old Vines available for reposting.
