
Top Greek scientist: Santorini earthquake outlook remains uncertain
The Greek government's chief seismologist says the frequency of earthquakes affecting Santorini and nearby islands has eased in recent days, but that the outlook for continued tremors in the coming weeks remains uncertain.
'Unfortunately, for now, we must wait. These seismic sequences do not end quickly. They follow their own timeline,' seismologist Costas Papazachos told state-run ERT radio Monday.
'Hopefully, this particular sequence will surprise us in a positive way and resolve itself sooner rather than later,' he said.
A state of emergency has been declared on Santorini and the nearby islands of Ios, Amorgos, and Anafi after a swarm of undersea earthquakes this month – sometimes felt every few minutes – prompted thousands of residents and workers to move to the Greek mainland.
Schools on the islands remain closed for a third week, while security services have set up rescue teams and backup power generators as part of precautionary measures.
The government announced Monday that an emergency port facility was being established on Santorini in case of a wide-scale evacuation.
Papazachos, a professor of geophysics at the University of Thessaloniki, currently serves as the representative of two emergency committees that include scientists and officials from government, the military, and emergency services.
He said Santorini, a volcanic island shaped by catastrophic eruptions, did not face danger from its dormant volcano, but noted that magma was affecting the tremors.
'The root cause of the activity is the interaction of tectonic and magmatic processes,' he said. 'That does not mean that the molten material – the magma – will manage to break through 8 kilometers [5 miles] of crust and reach the surface, causing a new volcanic eruption.'
Scientists were developing a clearer picture after gathering data from multiple sensors, he said.
'We are monitoring not only seismographs but also numerous other systems that track ground deformation, gas emissions, and satellite data,' he said. 'At this moment, I can honestly say we do not have a definitive forecast, as it is too early to assess the current slight de-escalation of seismic activity. We have encountered many surprises.'
Earthquakes of up to magnitude 5.1 were recorded Monday in the undersea area bordered by the four islands which remain under a state of emergency.

A total lunar eclipse is about to make the moon appear a reddish color across the Western Hemisphere. The event will happen Thursday night into Friday morning. The best places to see the eclipse will be in North America and South America. Parts of Africa and Europe may also get brief views. A lunar eclipse happens when the sun, Earth, and moon line up just right, with Earth positioned between the sun and moon. This causes the Earth to create a shadow on the moon. In a total lunar eclipse, the Earth's shadow covers all of the moon. Another kind of eclipse is a solar eclipse. In a solar eclipse, the moon gets in a position where it blocks light from the sun, causing a partial or full shadow on Earth. A total lunar eclipse can also be called a blood moon. It makes the moon appear reddish-orange, similar to the element copper. The color comes from small amounts of sunlight passing through the Earth's atmosphere. The American space agency NASA says lunar and solar eclipses happen between four and seven times a year. The last total lunar eclipse was in 2022. This one will be visible for about one hour starting Friday morning at 2:26 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). The time when the Earth's shadow covers all of the moon will be close to 3 a.m. EDT. 'As long as the sky is clear, you should be able to see it,' Shannon Schmoll told the Associated Press. She is the director of Abrams Planetarium at Michigan State University. No special equipment will be needed to see the reddish moon. The total lunar eclipse may be harder to see in Europe and Africa because the moon will be close to setting. Michael Faison is an astronomy expert from Yale University. He told the AP, 'This is really an eclipse for North and South America.' Zoe Ortiz is a historian with the University of North Texas. She noted that different civilizations have observed lunar eclipses for thousands of years. This helped ancient people learn things about the behaviors of the sun, moon, and stars. 'They were looking at the night sky and they had a much brighter vision than we do today,' Ortiz said. The ancient Greek thinker and writer Aristotle observed that Earths' shadow on the moon during a lunar eclipse was always curved. This fact supported proof that the Earth is round. The next total lunar eclipse will appear in the sky September 7, across parts of Asia, Africa, Australia and Europe. Parts of the Americas will get the next chance to see one in March 2026. Researchers: Oldest Evidence of Lead Pollution Found in Greece
Ancient Greece produced the earliest records of democracy - and, scientists now say, lead pollution. That is the finding of a study that recently appeared in Communications Earth and Environment. The researchers studied sediment cores removed from mainland Greece and below the Aegean Sea. They found in the cores the oldest known evidence of lead pollution in the environment dating back around 5,200 years. That is 1,200 years older than the former oldest evidence of lead pollution. That evidence was discovered in Serbia. In ancient times, lead was released into the atmosphere as a product of copper and silver production. The toxic, or poisonous, metal turned to dust over time and settled onto the soil. Joseph Maran of Heidelberg University was a co-writer of the new study. 'Silver was used for jewelry, for special objects — but it wasn't found in a pure state,' it was mined in ore combined with lead, Maran said The place with the earliest signs of lead is in northeastern Greece, near the island of Thasos. Past evidence suggests Thasos was one of the area's most important places for silver mining and metalwork, said Maran. Yale historian Joseph Manning, who was not involved in the study, said 'Lead released from smelting is the world's first form of toxic or industrial pollution.' The researchers found that levels of lead contamination remained fairly low in ancient Greece. The levels remained low throughout the Bronze Age, the Classical period and the Hellenistic period. The Classical period is famous for Athenian democracy, and the thinkers Socrates and Plato. And the Hellenistic period saw Greek cultural influence reach its height across the Mediterranean. But the new study shows that around 2,150 years ago 'a very strong and abrupt increase" in lead releases caused by human activities took place across Greece, said co-writer Andreas Koutsodendris of Heidelberg University. Around that time, the Roman army won control of the Greek peninsula, completely changing the area's society and economy. As Roman trade, colonies and shipping grew across the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea, demand for silver coins also grew. As a result, more smelting was required, Koutsodendris said. Later the Roman Empire used lead to make tools for eating and building, including pipes. Past research – including a study of ice cores from Greenland – had detected high levels of lead across much of the Northern Hemisphere during Roman times. But the new study adds a more exact 'and local picture to how lead levels changed,' said Nathan Chellman.
