SIPITANG: PBRS Wanita head for Sindumin, Maria Samuel, urged the government, particularly the Public Works Department, to carry out maintenance and upgrades on the road connecting Kampung Melamam to the Village Development Cooperative (KPD), as it is currently damaged and muddy. The main road for the villagers to access the KPD area and Kampung Lotok is the only route available. It also connects the old Lotok road and other villages like Kampung Kaban, Kampung Melamam, Kampung Damai and Kampung Marau to the town of Sipitang.
Advertisement Maria said residents are disappointed and angry because the Public Works Department (JKR) has neglected this road which many residents rely on. Several villages in the surrounding areas also want this road upgraded, considering that the KPD area is abundant with agricultural crops with durian, rubber, oil palm being harvested. Residents have attempted to maintain the road by placing large stones in order to allow vehicles to pass. 'JKR should consider how villagers are supposed to transport their agricultural produce to the market when their vehicles get stuck,' she said.

Not to mention pregnant women and elderly who need to go to the hospital.' 'Even an ambulance cannot to get through the road, which is filled with mud and potholes,' she said. Sipitang fire victim gets new house

SIPITANG: A single mother who lost her home in a fire just a day before Aidiladha celebrations in 2024 received a new one under the Program Perumahan Rakyat Sejahtera (PPRS). Baidah Amit from Kampung Lumut was among the recipients of the PPRS housing assistance, which aims to provide safe and comfortable shelter for those affected by unforeseen disasters. Advertisement Sipitang Umno Division Chief Abd Rahman Mat Noh said the housing assistance application successfully enabled the victim to own a PPRS home after losing her previous residence to fire last year. The programme is part of rural poverty eradication initiatives that provide new construction or home repair assistance to the poor and hardcore poor to ensure they have safe and comfortable housing. 'With this housing assistance, they can now shelter comfortably without worrying about strong winds, rain or heat,' said Abd Rahman. He hopes the victim would overcome her trauma and find joy in the government's concern by providing housing to those affected by uninvited disasters. Advertisement Abd Rahman acknowledged that while the new house may not be identical to the one destroyed by fire, the recipients should be grateful for the PPRS home contributed by the government. He said anyone can apply for PPRS housing but must follow established procedures, assuring the public that there is no favouritism or discrimination in distributing government aid. Commemorating ‘Double Six' tragedy in Sandakan

SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS), in collaboration with the Sandakan Parliamentary Service Centre, held a memorial ceremony, on Friday to commemorate the 'Double Six' tragedy at Taman Chong Tain Vun, Jalan Trig Hill. The event drew leaders and community representatives, including Member of Parliament Vivian Wong Shir Yee, MPS President Walter Kenson, several State Assemblymen, agency officials, NGOs and family members of the late Datuk Chong Tain Vun. Advertisement Wreaths were laid, followed by a moment of silence to honour the lives lost in the air crash. Walter said the memorial was a joint initiative between MPS and Vivian Wong to remember one of Sabah's darkest days and in particular, to recognise the contributions of a prominent figure from this district who died in the crash. 'He was a respected lawyer and public servant. This ceremony is a step toward ensuring the tragedy and the people we lost, are never forgotten,' he said. He also expressed gratitude to all who attended, regardless of political affiliation, and noted the strong support from local organisations despite the short notice. The tragedy occurred on June 6, 1976, when a plane carrying several Sabah leaders crashed in Kg Sembulan after departing from Labuan to Kota Kinabalu. Among the victims were Chief Minister Tun Fuad Stephens, Datuk Salleh Sulong, Datuk Peter Mojuntin, Chong Thien Vun and Assistant Minister Darius Binion.
