New super-black paint could fix satellite light pollution problem

British researchers are working to solve the problem of Elon Musk's reflective satellites by painting them black.
A new partnership between Surrey NanoSystems and the University ofSurrey is aiming to tackle what has become a major concern for astronomers worldwide.
They are working on using Surrey NanoSystems's newest product, Vantablack 310, which is a super-black coating.
When Vantablack 310 is applied to a surface, it reflects only 2% of incoming light, meaning it absorbs the remaining 98%.
This high level of light absorption makes the coated surfaces appear extremely dark, helping to minimise the unwanted brightness from satellites that can disrupt the work of stargazers.
More than 8,000 low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites already orbit Earth, and projections estimate a rise to 60,000 by 2030, partly driven by the development of mega-constellations.
To combat this problem, satellite operators have begun experimenting with mitigation strategies, including dark coatings and changes to satellite position, though the negative impact on ground-based measurement persists.
Surrey NanoSystems, with a heritage in ultra-black technologies, says their new solution, Vantablack 310, is a handleable, customer-applied coating, resistant to the challenging LEO environment.
The technology will be trialled on the Jovian 1 mission, scheduled to launch in 2026, which will be the first satellite mission from JUPITER – the Joint Universities Programme for In-Orbit Training, Education and Research.
One side of a shoebox-sized CubeSat will be coated with Vantablack 310, marking the first UK-led initiative to explore solutions for reducing satellite brightness.
The initiative aims to not only improve space sustainability but also demonstrate the efficacy of Vantablack 310 as a hull-darkening solution.
Dr. Keiran Clifford, Senior Technologist and project lead at Surrey Nanosystems, said: "Our latest coating technology, Vantablack 310, offers super-black performance across a wide range of viewing angles, while remaining robust to the challenging LEO environment.
"We're proud to be working with our partners at the University of Surrey to deliver innovations in the satellite sector, ensuring sustainable and equitable access to a night sky for all."
Researchers from the University of Surrey are developing ways to evaluate the experiment from Earth.

International Space Station too dangerous to stay in orbit, warns Musk
Elon Musk has called for the International Space Station (ISS) to be de-orbited 'within two years' amid concerns about the ageing facility's safety. The billionaire owner of SpaceX, which sends astronauts and cargo up to the ISS regularly for Nasa, said parts of the station were 'simply getting too old'. 'Even though SpaceX earns billions of dollars from transporting astronauts & cargo to the ISS, I nonetheless would like to go on record recommending that it be de-orbited within two years,' Mr Musk posted on X, his social media platform. The ISS is not scheduled to be brought back to Earth until 2030. Mr Musk's comments follow Nasa's decision to postpone a commercial mission to the ISS, which is jointly run by the US, Russia, Japan, Canada and the European Union, that was previously scheduled for Friday. Nasa said it was working with Russian space agency Roscosmos to investigate 'a new pressure signature' in a section of the station, called the Zvezda service module. Zvezda hosts living quarters, life support systems, key electrical components and flight control and propulsion systems, according to Nasa's website. Leaks were first detected aboard the ISS in 2019. Nasa has described the leaks, which are caused by microscopic cracks in the station's aluminium-based structure, as a 'top safety risk'. Over time, the leaks have been growing worse – although experts say they are closer to a slow puncture in a tyre than a blowout. Nevertheless, it means valuable air is being lost from the station, which is dependent on supply runs from Earth for oxygen, food, water and other essentials. The cracks in the station, parts of which are now a quarter of a century old, are thought to be the result of general wear and tear to its largely aluminium-based structure. In orbit, the ISS undergoes a constant cycle of cooling and heating that causes what is known as 'high cyclic fatigue' in its metal components, where tiny cracks can emerge. This is because aluminium becomes harder but more brittle over time as it is flexed. Casey Handmer, an American physicist who previously worked at Nasa's jet propulsion laboratory, claimed that the problem was potentially far more serious than had been publicly acknowledged and could lead to a failure in orbit that put astronauts at serious risk. There are seven people currently aboard the ISS. 'We could wake up tomorrow and find, with zero warning, that it has failed catastrophically,' Mr Handmer wrote on X. 'Whether that means a leak slow enough to close some hatches, get the crew out or at least into safer parts of the station, is a roll of the dice. 'It could also depressurise in less than a minute.' On Thursday, Nasa said Russian cosmonauts had carried out repairs to the Zvezda section. However, the US space agency postponed the Axiom Mission 4 launch, which would have taken an Indian astronaut to the ISS, while investigations are carried out. 'The postponement of Axiom Mission 4 provides additional time for Nasa and Roscosmos to evaluate the situation and determine whether any additional troubleshooting is necessary,' Nasa said. The Axiom Mission 4 launch will be carried out by Mr Musk's SpaceX, using both the company's Falcon 9 rocket and a Dragon capsule. The billionaire threatened to decommission his Dragon capsules as part of a blazing public row with Donald Trump on social media. However, Mr Musk has since said he regrets some of his comments during the spat and there has been no sign of him following through on the SpaceX threat. Tesla's minor Model S and X refreshes cost $5,000 more
Tesla is relaunching its Model S and Model X with minor changes as the EV maker struggles to address plummeting demand. The updated vehicles are launching in the US today with a $5,000 price increase applied across the All-Wheel Drive (AWD) and high-performance Plaid versions of both models, but judging by the comments on the announcement Tesla posted to X, customers aren't particularly impressed by the upgrades. Prices for the Model S now start at $84,990 for the AWD version, or $99,990 for the Plaid. The Model X AWD and Plaid have jumped to $89,990 and $104,990, respectively. These are Tesla's latest vehicle updates since launching the refreshed Model Y earlier this year. Tesla says the highlights of the Model S and Model X refresh are: The Model S Long Range can now drive up to 410 miles when equipped with 19-inch wheels, according to Tesla, but that's only a five-mile improvement compared to the previous version. The Model S Plaid also has some minor exterior styling tweaks that are 'optimized for high-speed stability,' and the Model X has an additional 2.5 cubic feet of space for third-row passengers and cargo. The ambient LED lighting along the dash and doors mirror the same feature that's available on Tesla's more affordable Model Y and 3 vehicles, but Tesla says the Model S and X versions provide 'unique animations' upon entry. The update also comes with some downgrades: the Model S Plaid is now 26 pounds heavier than its predecessor, and its top speed has been reduced from 200mph to 149mph. The Model X Plaid is even more egregious, weighing 183 pounds more than before, but the advertised top speed remains the same. The controversial yoke steering wheel is no longer available on the base AWD versions of either model, and can only be purchased as a $1,000 add-on for the Plaid package. The refresh seems to have people fired up, but not in a way that benefits Tesla. 'Go look at what Rivian, Lucid, Escalade IQ and EV9 are doing and copy that,' one commenter said on Tesla's X post. 'People want real 3 row SUVs with more range and tech and this isn't that.' There was some expectation for Tesla to bring the steer-by-wire and 48-volt electronic architecture technology it had introduced on the Cybertruck to its flagship Model S and X cars. Tesla is currently struggling to sell all three of these pricey vehicles, not helped by the political crisis surrounding the company.
