Ex-Dunfermline Athletic defender Josh Edwards celebrates promotion joy with Charlton Athletic

The Courier25-05-2025
Ex-Dunfermline defender Josh Edwards will be playing in the English Championship next season after a dramatic promotion with Charlton Athletic.
The former fans' favourite played the whole game as the Addicks triumphed over Leyton Orient in their League One play-off final.
Having missed out on automatic promotion by finishing fourth at the end of the regular season, the London club set up their trip to Wembley with a semi-final victory over Wycombe Wanderers.
In front of 40,000 of their own fans in a bumper crowd of 76,193, Nathan Jones' side seized the advantage with Macaulay Gillesphey's curling free-kick after half an hour.
And, with Edwards and fellow Scot Greg Docherty playing key roles, they held on resolutely right into the 12th minute of stoppage time.
Edwards made the move to Charlton from Dunfermline last summer after five years at East End Park.
With plenty of suitors south of the border, the left-back appears to have chosen well with his switch to The Valley.
The 24-year-old was making his 45th competitive appearance of the campaign at Wembley and started 38 of 46 league games to prove himself a key figure for his new club.
Edwards set his sights on playing in the English Premier League when he left East End Park last year and Charlton are now a step closer to the top-flight with their promotion after five years in League One.
It is expected the former Airdrie player will now receive an enhanced contract thanks to playing in a higher league.
However, Courier Sport has learned that suggestions Dunfermline are due any windfall due to add-ons in the deal agreed with Charlton 12 months ago are wide of the mark.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Edwards said: 'It's amazing. I came down here to achieve things like this and get myself up as high as I could possibly go.
'For the first season, it's unbelievable. I'm buzzing.
'We had a slow start to the season and we were getting a wee bit of stick. But I'm absolutely delighted it's turned out this way and ended up like this.
'We were put under pressure at some points in this game. But luckily we overcame them and now we're in the Championship.'

Martin Odegaard responds to Arsenal legend who told Mikel Arteta he shouldn't be captain

Arsenal legend Tony Adams made headlines this week by telling Gunners boss Mikel Arteta to strip Martin Odegaard of the captaincy and give the armband to Declan Rice Martin Odegaard has staunchly defended his role as Arsenal captain after stinging criticism from Tony Adams. Club legend Adams took aim at Odegaard, 26, by claiming that the Gunners won't win the Premier League title so long as he's captain. ‌ The former Arsenal skipper urged Mikel Arteta to give the armband to team-mate Declan Rice, suggesting that the change would allow Odegaard to play with more freedom. But Adams won't get his way after the squad overwhelming voted for the Norwegian to remain as captain for the 2025-26 season. ‌ Now Odegaard has responded to Adams in an interview ahead of Sunday's curtain-raiser away to Manchester United. Asked about his style of leadership, the midfielder explained to Sky Sports: "It's a lot to be fair. It's a lot of small things. It's hard to describe it, it's more like a constant role you do. ‌ "There's always these small things you have to do. In general it's just how I see it is to get the best out of the team and how to give the team the right mindset. Help the players around you, get the best mindset in everyone. "I think before the game just on the pitch I do a little one (team talk) and inside the dressing room we have different people talking. It's not just me there's a lot of people sharing the responsibility and the manager does a lot as well. It's a shared thing. It's not just me all the time." Adams admitted during an event for Irish Independent that Odegaard wasn't his 'kind' of captain. "The call is to make Declan Rice the captain," the ex-Gunners defender began in a plea to Arteta. "I think Declan is my kind of captain, and it might free Odegaard up to play with a bit more freedom. Every now and again as a manager, you have to put someone who reflects you, who reflects the football club that you think can actually take you to the next level. "He (Arteta) has got an opportunity this year to actually turn into a winner. To win league titles, you have to be a [Jurgen] Klopp, you have to be a [Sir Alex] Ferguson. You have to lead by example, you have to be a winner, you have to go about your business. And that reflects in your captain. ‌ "And I'm seeing Declan Rice as a captain but I'm saying to Arteta: Come on, step up now. It's your time to be a winning manager and a fantastic manager, because you're not going to win the league with Odegaard as captain." Arteta, though, believes that there's 'no question' that Odegaard should be captain. "Well my opinion is clear and it's not just my opinion, it's all the staff and especially the players." the Gunners boss explained. ‌ "I asked them to vote the captain and I got the result yesterday. And by a mile, by a big, big 100 miles, everybody choosing the same person, which is Martin Odegaard, and which is the most clear sign that you can have. "It's how they feel about who has to be their captain to defend, improve and win the matches that we want to win. So I think there's no question about that."

Sunderland run riot on Premier League return against toothless West ham

Returns to the Premier League do not come much better than this. Those eight years away for Sunderland, half of which were spent in League One, felt almost forgotten in the sunshine of the Stadium of Light. Red-and-white and the blue of a new away kit bounced in unity at full-time. No one had left the ground. If there had been any prayers about the perfect day, then they were answered. It feels like this club is a million miles from the one whose last game at this level, on this ground, was a 2-0 defeat to Swansea in 2017. They are getting used to celebration, and headed goals at the Roker End of the stadium. It was from there that this footballing comeback really started, with the most dramatic of stoppage-time goals in the semi-final of the Championship play-off against Coventry from Dan Ballard in May. The stadium shook in celebration then, and he scored again, with his head, like last time (almost) to make it 2-0, with 17 minutes remaining. The ball dropped in the same part of the Roker End goal. The celebrations were not quite as wild, but there was still disbelief amongst the joy. Sunderland had scored their first goal back in the Premier League 12 minutes earlier, just past the hour mark. That was from another header, into the same part of the same goal. It will become sacred ground. The deep cross from the left was provided by the debutant defender Omar Alderete, who had played eight minutes of football in England at that point. It was met by Eliezer Mayenda, who out jumped Nayef Aguerd and sent a downward header back across the West Ham penalty area. Mads Hermansen in the West Ham goal seemed to follow the flight of the ball and then threw out a despairing right hand as the realisation came it was heading into the far corner. His disbelief was matched in the stands of this ground, but then came the celebration. Day one, goal one, and Sunderland were, as their supporters sing, on their way. Ballard would add that second with a much cleaner header than his stoppage-time goal against Coventry. He was excellent once more. There was more to come, when the Sunderland substitute Wilson Isidor broke down the West Ham right, in the first minute of stoppage time. It looked as if he was afforded the freedom of Wearside, before checking inside onto his right foot and shooting. Hermansen flicked out a lazy left hand and the ball went under his body. It needed a double take that Hermansen cost £20million from Leicester this summer. He put his head in his hands after the goal, which he at least did not drop. Nobody in red and white cared. They played Bob Marley's Three Little Birds at full-time. Every little thing was all right. Seven new players had started for Sunderland. After a summer spending spree that has cost £120million, all three goals came from players who had helped Sunderland out of the Championship. Somewhere amidst the joy will come an analysis of just how bad and how toothless West Ham were, and where exactly they are heading under Graham Potter. They got worse as it went on — Ballard cleared an effort off the line from El Hadji Malick Diouf in the first half — and by the time Sunderland's third went in, their 3000 supporters had seen enough and were heading south.
