The American satellite was tracked making two close passes to China's TJS-16 and TJS-17 satellites on April 26 and 29, with a distance of 10.5 miles and 7.4 miles, respectively. It was not immediately clear why the U.S. Space Force's satellite maneuvered around the targets.
USA 324, which was launched in January 2022, and other GSSAP satellites can track and observe objects in geosynchronous orbit more than 22,000 miles above the equator, NASA said.
The U.S. Space Force said the GSSAP satellites support its space surveillance operations by conducting "Rendezvous and Proximity Operations," in which the satellites maneuver near a space object, enabling characterization for anomaly resolution and enhanced surveillance.

Meanwhile, the TJS-16 and TJS-17, which were launched into space on March 29 and April 10, respectively, are part of the Chinese satellite program Tongxin Jishu Shiyan, meaning "communication technology experiment," according to SpaceNews.
While China said both satellites were designed for satellite communication technology verification, SpaceNews said they were viewed by Western analysts as conducting classified missions, which included satellite inspection activities, to support the country's armed forces.

These units represent nearly one-third of the Space Force's operational squadrons and are already integrated into global combatant command operations. Despite that, the Department of the Air Force is pursuing a plan to transfer these forces into the active duty Space Force — effectively dismantling seasoned units and starting over. Internal projections show only 8% of these Guardsmen are willing to leave their current status. The rest would walk, taking decades of hard-won experience with them. This approach isn't just shortsighted — it's expensive. The National Guard Bureau estimates that standing up a Space National Guard using existing personnel and infrastructure would cost just $250,000. By contrast, transferring and rebuilding units under active duty structures is projected to cost upwards of $700 million. That's a staggering figure, particularly as the proposed fiscal 2026 defense budget would force the Space Force to cut elsewhere. National Guard space operators provide a combat-ready reserve force that can be activated quickly and cost effectively. The U.S. must preserve and enhance every ounce of operational capacity it already has. Support for a Space National Guard spans party lines. Multiple bills to establish the component have been introduced in Congress. Governors have expressed concern over losing control of their state-based units. And in 2024, then-candidate Donald Trump pledged before the National Guard Association that, if reelected, he would create the Space National Guard as the 'primary combat reserve of the U.S. Space Force.' That promise has not yet been fulfilled. The infrastructure exists. The mission sets are clearly defined. The personnel are trained and ready. What's missing is leadership at the national level to codify what's already working — and avoid the costly mistake of breaking it apart. This isn't a debate about force structure on a whiteboard. It's a matter of readiness, war-fighting continuity and strategic risk. The Space Force was designed to be lean, agile and focused. A Space National Guard complements that mission, providing surge-to-war capacity without burdening the active duty end strength or duplicating systems already in place. The U.S. needs a space reserve that's trained, trusted and ready to mobilize. We already have one. We should keep it. It's time for the administration and Congress to act. Although Musk backed off from his initial threat hours later in a post on X, it is possible the world's richest man could change his mind again. Space science experts told ABC News that SpaceX has been essential to NASA's missions and the breakdown of a relationship would leave a hole that would be hard to fill. "Basically, the United States has uniquely put all of its eggs into the Elon Musk basket in terms of a sovereign, uniquely American vehicle to get people into and out of space," Moriba Jah, a professor of aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics at the University of Texas at Austin, told ABC News."Now that relationship's severed; it leaves the United States completely vulnerable." NASA and SpaceX's relationship began in 2008 when the federal space agency launched the Commercial Resupply Services program to deliver of cargo and supplies to the ISS on commercially operated spacecraft. The agency signed a contract with SpaceX, and awarded the company 12 flights valued at about $1.6 billion. Mark Jernigan, executive director of the Rice Space Institute in Houston and former associate director for Space Life Sciences Spacecraft Systems Development Support at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, said he was involved in the launching of NASA's commercial cargo program. "The idea was to offload NASA responsibility by actually changing the paradigm of how NASA did business, and commercial cargo was kind of one of the groundbreaking versions," he told ABC News. "The nature of that was to specify what kind of cargo you wanted to launch, and how much you wanted … and the requirements that the rocket has to meet in order to safely dock with the station." At the time, Jernigan said space programs in Japan, Europe, the U.S. and Russia delivered cargo, but now just the latter two do so. Dragon 1 provided cargo service to the ISS for 10 years, between 2012 and 2020, before it was retired. SpaceX launched Dragon 2 with two versions: one as a replacement for the Dragon 1 spacecraft and the second as a capsule that could take crew into space. In September 2014, NASA announced the selection of SpaceX and its Crew Dragon spacecraft as one of the companies to transport U.S. astronauts to the ISS. Michael Liemohn, a professor of climate and space sciences and engineering at the University of Michigan, said SpaceX has been essential to NASA's commercial cargo program. "[SpaceX has been] very important," he told ABC News. "When we retired the space shuttles, our only way [for] sending humans into low Earth orbit was to contract with Russia on a Soyuz capsule, and that's why NASA commissioned both Boeing and SpaceX to build new crew capsules so that there would be capability there." Jernigan -- the Rice Space Institute executive director -- noted that SpaceX has been more successful than other candidates including Boeing and its spacecraft Starliner. In June 2024, two NASA astronauts performed the first astronaut-crewed flight of Starliner capsule to the ISS. What was supposed to be a mission lasting about one week turned into a nine-month stay aboard the ISS due to several issues with Starliner and NASA's decision to add the two astronauts to the ISS crew. Eventually, in March 2025, SpaceX's Crew-10 successfully docked at the ISS, bringing four new astronauts to work on the floating lab and setting up the return to Earth of the two astronauts, as well as a third NASA astronaut and a Russian cosmonaut. "Right now, the only U.S. provider [for crew] is SpaceX, and so not having SpaceX would be a big deal," Jernigan said. "My speculation would be that if the SpaceX Dragon went away, it would be difficult to ramp up Boeing to replace SpaceX." He noted that such a change would be costly. "So if we had to do without SpaceX, we would really have to shift gears and infuse a lot of capital to try to get back our alternatives up to speed," he said. SpaceX also plays a role in the Artemis program, which aims to send astronauts back to the moon for the first time in more than 50 years and eventually set up a permanent base there before heading to Mars. SpaceX is the lunar lander provider for the first flight and Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, is the second lunar lander provider. If Musk were to decommission the Dragon spacecraft and no longer have contracts with NASA, it would be hard for Blue Origin to get up to speed, according to Jah from the University of Texas at Austin "If Dragon goes away and then it's just Blue Origin, we would have to put more funding resources not just into trying to get Blue Origin to launch sooner, but also in being able to test all those technologies in ways that they haven't been tested yet," he said. "Like, so far, the SpaceX technologies have been very successful in getting people into and out of space. That has not happened yet with the Blue Origin technologies and, at most, they've only had sub-orbital flights."

A day after the White House held a farewell press conference for SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk to highlight his efforts as outgoing leader of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), President Donald Trump suddenly pulled Musk ally Jared Isaacman as his pick for NASA administrator. While the White House released a May 30 video chronicling Musk's contributions to DOGE and several X posts thanking him and listing various "DOGE wins," the gestures were some of the last, final public actions of goodwill between Trump and Musk. On Saturday, Trump announced in a social media post he was pulling the nomination for Isaacman, a commercial astronaut and founder and CEO of payment processing company Shift4 Payments after "a thorough review of prior associations." Trump also said he would unveil a "new Nominee who will be Mission aligned, and put America First in Space." Isaacman's affiliations with Musk include being an investor in SpaceX, in addition to leading two private spaceflight missions with SpaceX, including Inspiration4. The 2021 Inspiration4 mission was the first time an all-civilian crew orbited Earth. Isaacman addressed his pulled nomination in an episode of the "All-In Podcast," which is hosted by four venture capitalists and covers business, technology and society, that dropped Wednesday. Specifically, Isaacman said he received a call from the White House May 30 notifying him his nomination wouldn't advance because the White House had "decided to go in a different direction." Isaacman said he suspected his ties to Musk were part of the decision, noting the call came the same day Musk's tenure with DOGE concluded. "I don't need to play dumb on this," Isaacman said in the podcast. "I don't think that the timing was much of a coincidence, that there were other changes going on the same day. "There were some people that had some axes to grind, I guess, and I was a good, visible target." Tensions between Musk and Trump continued to escalate after Musk's departure as a special government employee May 30 and Isaacman's withdrawn nomination the following day. Although Musk previously told CBS News in an interview clip released May 27 that he was disappointed by the House's passage of Trump's massive tax and spending package, the "big, beautiful bill," because it would increase the federal deficit, Musk's attacks on the measure ramped up exponentially after Trump rescinded Isaacman's nomination. Specifically, on Tuesday, Musk labeled the measure a "disgusting abomination" and followed up by urging the American public to contact lawmakers to "KILL the BILL" in an X post Wednesday. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Tuesday that Trump was aware of Musk's position on the bill and that it didn't change the president's stance on the measure. And Trump did not mince words Thursday as tensions between the two men reached a boiling point. Trump said Musk was irritated with provisions in the bill that would cut an electric vehicle tax credit that benefits companies like Tesla. He also suggested Musk may suffer from "Trump derangement syndrome," a term used to describe deeply negative reactions to the president. "I'm very disappointed because Elon knew the inner workings of this bill better than almost anybody sitting here, better than you people," Trump said in the Oval Office during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. "He knew everything about it. He had no problem with it. All of a sudden, he had a problem, and he only developed the problem when he found out that we're going to have to cut the EV mandate because that's billions and billions of dollars, and it really is unfair." Trump also specifically mentioned Isaacman's nomination, claiming Musk recommended Isaacman for the role. But Trump voiced concern about Isaacman's ties to the Democratic Party. "He wanted and rightfully, you know, he recommended somebody that he, I guess, knew very well. I'm sure he respected him, but to run NASA," Trump told reporters Thursday. "And I didn't think it was appropriate. And he happened to be a Democrat, like, totally Democrat. And I say, you know, look, we won. We get certain privileges. And one of the privileges is we don't have to appoint a Democrat. NASA is very important." Trump then said he "understood" why Musk was upset over the pulled nomination. The White House directed Fox News Digital to Trump's comments Thursday and Isaacman's previous donations to Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York. Isaacman told the "All-In Podcast" he doesn't think his past political donations to Democrats were a factor in his pulled nomination, and that he identifies as "right-leaning." Isaacman and Musk did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital. Trump and Musk continued to trade barbs Thursday. At one point, Musk urged the removal of the "disgusting pork" included in Trump's tax and spending bill. He also said it was "false" that he was shown the measure "even once." Musk even went so far as to say Trump wouldn't have won the 2024 election if it weren't for Musk's backing. Meanwhile, Trump accused Musk of going "CRAZY" over cuts to the EV credits and said Musk was "wearing thin." Although Politico reported that Trump and Musk were slated to speak Friday over the phone, Trump shut down speculation of a call between the two. "No. I won't be speaking to him for a while I guess, but I wish him well," Trump said, according to CNN. "I'm not even thinking about Elon. He's got a problem. The poor guy's got a problem," Trump said. Despite Musk's departure, White House officials have said DOGE's efforts to address waste, fraud and abuse will continue, and Trump and cabinet members will oversee DOGE. The agency is expected to formally shut down July 4, 2026.
