Russell Henley surges clear at Tour Championship with Rory McIlroy in the chasing pack

RTÉ News4 hours ago
Russell Henley shot 61 to move into a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Tour Championship, finishing with three straight birdies to move to nine under par.
It leaves him two clear of defending champion Scottie Scheffler, the world number one finishing on his own in second place at the East Lake Golf Club.
Rory McIlroy was the best of the Irish on four under par, with Shane Lowry finishing on even par. McIlroy made it to the turn on three under, after a spectacular 30-foot putt for eagle at seven.
The back nine was more mixed as the county Down man mixed three birdies with two bogeys.
For Lowry, it was a more consistent day, with two birdies and two bogeys to finish on level par.
The course was set up to be more challenging with pins tucked in corners of the greens but it mattered little. In total, 22 of the 30 players were under par, six players were even and just two players were over par. The combined score of the field was 82 under par.
Perhaps it was the heavy rain that pummelled the Atlanta area Tuesday and Wednesday that helped the golfers, with Round 1 played under preferred lies rules due to evening downpours. This allowed balls on the fairways or other closely mown areas to be lifted, cleaned and placed in a preferred spot.
The Tour Championship winner will also be crowned FedEx champion and will pocket the $10m on offer, which equates to roughly €8.6m.

Cork angler qualifies for Irish fishing squad heading to top European competition

Corkman Today at 23:20 A member of Kanturk and District Trout Anglers booked his place in the Irish team ahead of the premier European fishing competition in Portugal next year. Declan O'Sullivan placed sixth in the All-Ireland River Championship, which was held in Rathdrum, Co Wicklow last weekend. More than 50 of Ireland's best anglers flocked to the county to fish in the River Avonmore, which is a notoriously tough environment to catch brown trout. Competitors took part in fishing sessions during the morning and the evening on each day of the competition. Declan told The Corkman that conditions were 'tough.' 'The fishing was technical as it was a hard river with not many fish,' he said. 'I managed to get a few anyway and I was delighted with a sixth-place finish. 'The water was low, and the temperature was high, which made for tough conditions. 'The river is known for having low numbers of trout unlike rivers in Kanturk or the River Suir, which are full of fish. Declan's placement in the competition cemented his spot in the Irish European Championship team, which is being held in Portugal next year. The River Allow, which is a tributary of the River Blackwater, flows through Kanturk and is Declan's usual practice location. 'I did a lot of practicing leading up to the competition. I would be out four or five times a week at least, and I got a lot of practice in before they closed the River (Allow),' Declan added. Kanturk and District Trout Anglers made the decision to pause angling in the River Allow on August 12, due to high water temperature, which impacted Declan's ability to prepare for the event. The angler thanked his fellow anglers in Kanturk for their support throughout last weekend's competition, as well as Rathdrum Trout Anglers for hosting the qualifying event. 'I would like to thank everyone who wished me the best for the competition and for those who helped and supported me over the years,' Declan said. 'Kanturk is a great club to be a part of. 'Thanks to Rathdrum Trout Anglers for holding the competition as there is a lot of work that goes into running it and they did an excellent job in doing so.' Related topics Martin Mongan

Shamrock Rovers edge closer to qualification with impressive away win

UEFA Conference League – play-off qualifying round, first leg Santa Clara 1 Shamrock Rovers 2 A FIRST goal in Europe for Danny Grant and another skilfully taken strike from the influential Danny Mandroiu leaves Shamrock Rovers some 90 minutes away from back-to-back qualifications for the league phase of the Conference League after a controlled, tactically astute performance in the Azores. Stephen Bradley's side did so by having to come from behind as they more than matched Santa Clara, who finished fifth in the Portuguese Primeira Liga last season, in the 24-degree heat of the Estadio Sao Miguel in Ponta Delgada. It's thus all set up for another rousing night at Tallaght Stadium ahead of next Thursday's second leg when Rovers will hope to make the group/league phase in Europe for a third time in four years. In doing so, they would also become the first Irish side to reach that stage from outside the champions' path. The prize is six matches in the 36-team league phase, and its guaranteed minimum €3.95 million prize fund. Rovers grossed €7.2 million from their run to the knockout round play-offs last February, losing on penalties to Norwegian side Molde. Santa Clara started six of the 17 Brazilians in their squad, including their lightning-quick number 10, Gabriel Silva, who scored twice in the defeat of Irish League side Larne in the previous round. Advertisement In Rovers' only change from last week's 4-0 win over Kosovars FC Ballkani, Darragh Nugent came into central midfield for the injured Connor Malley. Far from overawed by the conditions and their opponents, Rovers showed they could stretch Santa Clara with the pace of Grant on the right and bustling centre-forward play of in-form Rory Gaffney. But just as Rovers looked to have settled well into the game, Santa Clara took the lead on 20 minutes. Having just bravely blocked a drive from Mandroiu, Sidney Lima used the full width of the big pitch to pick out Paulo Victor hogging the touchline with a cross-field ball. Silva was found from the pullback to bring a terrific one-handed save by Ed McGinty. It proved to no avail, though, as the ball dropped for Vinicius Lopes to head to the net. A short VAR check confirmed the goal. Unbowed and enjoying 55% possession, Rovers passed the ball with ever more confidence as the half progressed. Mandroiu worried skipper Gabriel Batista between the Santa Clara posts when drilling a shot not far wide before Hoops were deservedly level two minutes before the break. The speed of thought and touch of Mandroiu played an integral part, with a clever return pass for the run of Grant. The winger skipped into the area to beat Batista with the help of a slight deflection off Rocha. Rovers survived a nervous moment four minutes into the second when Rocha poked the ball home from a Silva free kick, a VAR check confirming he was offside. Another VAR check for offside denied Rovers the lead at the other end on 57 minutes when Gaffney turned home from underneath the crossbar, skipper Roberto Lopes, on his milestone 50th appearance in Europe, having headed Dylan Watts' free kick back across goal. But there was no need for any check for what proved to be Rovers' winner on the night when it arrived after 66 minutes. Another Watts delivery from a free kick was headed into space in the area by the tenacious Josh Honohan. Mandroiu read it perfectly, taking a delightful first touch to burst between two defenders and confidently side-foot past Batista to the corner of the net. Santa Clara: Batista; Lima, Rocha, Nunes; Cabral (Pires, 62), Adriano, Serginho (Ferreira, 73), Paulo Victor (Pereira, 85); Lopes (Manoel, 73), Costa (Wendel Silva, 62), Gabriel Silva. Shamrock Rovers: McGinty; Cleary, Lopes, Grace; Grant, Watts (McEneff, 89), Healy, Nugent (Barrett, 90+4), Honohan, Mandroiu (Burke, 73); Gaffney (Noonan, 73) . Referee: Stefan Ebner (Austria).

McIlroy left to laugh as circus act birdie on 18th rounds off opening 66 at East Lake

More Rory McIlroy drama in Georgia. Events at the final hole of the opening round of the Tour Championship barely compared with what played out at Augusta National in April but these were still moments of McIlroy box office. No wonder he stood laughing with arm aloft. McIlroy found himself in a greenside bunker in two at the par-five 18th. He caught his attempt from the sand trap far too cleanly, the ball flying over the flag and rebounding from a grandstand. The bounce was favourable; McIlroy had 17ft left for a birdie. The putt found the bottom of the cup, much to the amusement of McIlroy and his playing partner Scottie Scheffler. McIlroy's 66 at East Lake leaves him five shy of the first-round lead after Russell Henley's stunning 61. This was a fine day for Keegan Bradley, were he not in the midst of the toughest choice of his professional career. Henley will play under Bradley for the United States in the Ryder Cup next month. Scheffler continued his excellent form with a 63, including a back half of just 31. The 64s of Patrick Cantlay, Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas were notable with that trio likely to receive captain's picks from Bradley. The key dilemma surrounds whether Bradley is also going to select himself, thereby becoming the first playing captain in a Ryder Cup since Arnold Palmer in 1963. Bradley's 70 here hardly added to the conversation. The 39-year-old did not hang around for media duties. Significant in this debate is what Bradley's peers will tell him to do. The mood music suggests they want Bradley on this team. 'Yeah, I would,' said Thomas when asked whether he would pick Bradley. 'It is a lot [to handle both jobs]. I think Keegan would say the same. I don't think he would say it's easy by any means. But myself, whatever other [vice-]captains, automatic qualifiers have all the faith in the world that whatever he decides to do is going to be in the best interest of the team.' Morikawa outlined the trickiness of the scenario: 'I think he's got one of the most difficult decisions anyone has ever had to make. He has put more hours than we could even ask and know about into this Ryder Cup and he still has played great golf. He is one of the best Americans as of right now. But I truly do not know where his head sits and I don't want to be in that position. 'If you lose, every reason is going to come up. At the end of the day, we lost in Rome because we played bad golf and they played great golf. That's what it comes down to.' There are European colours on the leaderboard. On what was a benign Atlanta day, with preferred lies allowed, Tommy Fleetwood and Robert MacIntyre joined the 64 club. Ludvig Åberg signed for a 66. 'I think the course was as forgiving as we're going to get it,' Fleetwood said. 'But actually probably the biggest takeaway is how good everyone is at golf that's here. I think the scoring is unbelievable. I'm sure we could talk about the fact that we had soft conditions and they were receptive but you've still got to play and you've still got to hit the shots.' It was announced on the eve of this tournament that Cantlay would be among players on a new committee aimed at reshaping the PGA Tour. Tiger Woods will chair the group. 'Tiger asked me to be on the committee, so I said yes,' said Cantlay when asked his reasoning for being involved. With insight like this, what could go wrong. The Guardian
