Community helps save historic Webster Theater again
WEBSTER CITY, Iowa — The Webster Theater in Hamilton County welcomed audiences back last week for the first time in 18 months after a fire next door caused extensive damage.
Since 1906, the historic theater has been a staple in Webster City's downtown square, and the community has shown its support many times.
In the early 2010s, a difficult economy plagued Webster City. A washing machine factory, Electrolux, closed its doors in 2011 and moved to Mexico, taking away 500 jobs in the city. Many local businesses closed shortly after, including the Webster Theater in 2013.
However, the public soon rallied behind the theater, proving its importance to the community.
Residents created the Help Entertain and Restore Organization, or HERO. The nonprofit's purpose was to reopen the theater and operate it moving forward.

Community donations helped save the theater then, and now, over a decade later, the community pulled through yet again for this beloved, historic theater.
In November 2023, a fire in Webster City's downtown brought multiple crews to the area. The blaze took place next door to the theater, and it took crews over three hours to extinguish. Extensive damage was left behind, and standing water even flooded the theater floors.
HERO's board president, Jeff Pingel, said the restoration process was met with a lot of waiting until they were able to begin. That's why it took 18 months for the curtains to rise again at the theater.
Pingel said the total restoration process cost was close to $2 million. While insurance helped, community donations are the reason they were able to reopen.
The theater's front entrance still has a poster with QR codes that link to ways community members can donate to the restoration process. Another banner by the entrance lists the names of people who have contributed to saving the theater. At the bottom, it reads, 'Thank you to all the stars who've contributed to the Webster Theater! Without you, we'd be closed.'
HERO wasn't sure how collecting donations again would turn out since they had asked for the community's help only one decade before, but they were overwhelmed by the outcome.
'The world's changed a lot in a decade, streaming [has] really become a thing and you kind of wonder, would people still want to donate and to help out, and we've come to find out real fast that people want it back,' said Pingel.
The theater's soft launch was held on Thursday, May 1st, with a showing of Thunderbolts by Marvel Studios. Of their 100 seats, 52 were occupied.
Audiences also came out to the theater throughout the weekend.
Pingel said many were shocked by the theater's upgrades. While the building's structure is the same, there are many changes.
Upon entering the theater, there is a new color scheme and wall art. A design by the entrance highlights photos from the theater's history, connecting all different generations of movie-goers. There's also a new light-up popcorn sign above their concessions stand. HERO also wrote the names of different donors on stars and posted them along the doorways.
'It looks dramatically different, but still comfortably the same,' said Pingel about the entrance. 'But then when you walk into the auditorium, that's like 100-percent different than what it was like in the past.'
There's a new walkway in the auditorium, and the seats no longer split down the center. The seats were also upgraded to heated, reclining seats. There's also a new screen in the theater that the board is calling one of the largest single screens in North Central Iowa.

While plenty has changed, some has stayed the same, including their popcorn, which Pingel said is the best in Iowa because of their secret recipe.
They also kept their family-friendly prices. 2D tickets for adults cost $5 and children's tickets cost $4. The price for all of the concessions is between $2.50 and $5.50, and there's even free small popcorn provided every Wednesday.
The Webster Theater has a screening every night at 7 p.m., but according to its website, some movie times are subject to change. They have additional screenings at 2 p.m. on Sundays and 1 p.m. on Thursdays.
New movies start screening every Friday.
There will be a reopening celebration for the community on Friday, May 23rd, with the screening of Disney's Lilo and Stitch.

Thunderbolts* (New Avengers) Got Good Reviews, But It Can't Escape One Startling Box Office Fact
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Friends, it's time for another example of the MCU presenting itself as a 'glass half full/half empty' paradox. With the 2025 movie schedule seeing Thunderbolts* clocking in with some pretty good reactions, including CinemaBlend's Thunderbolts* review, you could say this vibraninum glass is indeed half full. However, those of you thinking the situation looks a bit more on the 'half empty' side will feel potentially vindicated, as apparently the box office numbers are still not looking too hot. Per numbers plucked from Box Office Mojo, the MCU's cinematic finale of Phase 5 is apparently the second lowest grossing picture in the entire lot. Now keep in mind, this ranking is based on the global box office total, and not focusing solely on what *The New Avengers took in at home or abroad. With that total picture in mind, here's the bottom 10 Marvel Studios earners at the global box office, from bottom to top. The Marvels: $206 million Thunderbolts: $359 million Captain America: The First Avenger/Black Widow: $370 million Eternals: $402 million Captain America: Brave New World: $415 million Thor: $449 million Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania: $476 million Ant-Man: $519 million Thor: The Dark World: $644 million Ok, so the good news is that with a couple more weeks of strong finishes, Thunderbolts* could realistically match or surpass the $370 million brought in by the first Captain America film and Black Widow. Also, solely on the basis of director Jake Schreier's $180 million production budget, the movie is basically knocking on the door of grossing double that amount. On the rough guidelines that attempt to account for advertising, as well as other hidden costs that aren't shared with the public, this looks good. Not terrible, but ok. However, this is a Marvel movie; a concept that means a lot more today than it did when Spider-Man and the X-Men were paving the way for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While I can't say for sure, I wouldn't be surprised if this number falls short of internal projections/expectations at Marvel Studios. Those sort of expectations kind of fall into place when you turn your business into the juggernaut that delivered several record breaking Avengers movies that Disney+ subscription holders can revisit at their leisure. Disney Plus + Hulu Bundle: From $10.99 A MonthFor as little as $19.99 a month, you can have the combined worlds present in the Disney+/Hulu Bundle! Ad-free, and ready to show you everything Marvel, Star Wars, and of course Disney, this is the portal to a multiverse of entertainment. Though if you're looking for an ad-supported tier, you can pay $10.99 a month to have the same access - just with commercials. View Deal Perhaps the final word on the matter should be the fact that even in its own corner of potential disappointment, Captain America: Brave New World brought in $415 million worldwide. That puts the Anthony Mackie-starring vehicle closer to the likes of the first Thor, which isn't a terrible place to be. I'm sure that if we sat here and really broke out the domestic vs. international grosses, we'd see some sort of pattern that could point to why we're seeing these sorts of results more often at MCU HQ. And considering the reversal of fortune that saw the phenomenon known as 'Stitchpossible' owning Memorial Day weekend, that's probably what some are doing right now. But these are only numbers, folks. If you're looking to revisit or introduce yourselves to Thunderbolts* (or *The New Avengers, if you're so inclined), you can head to a theater near you and do just that. Those of you concerned for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's health, don't fret just yet. Save your worries until after The Fantastic Four: First Steps debuts in theaters on July 25th, because if that tanks, then you can panic!

Disney Defends THUNDERBOLTS* Spoiler Reveal of THE NEW AVENGERS; Says Fans Actually Liked It — GeekTyrant
Marvel fans who hit theaters opening weekend for Thunderbolts* got the full payoff after months of speculation on what that sneaky little asterisk meant. It turns out, the team introduced in the movie is officially The New Avengers in the MCU, a reveal held back until the film's final scenes… only for Marvel to drop the twist in its marketing just a couple days later. As you know, that didn't sit well with a lot of fans. I saw so many complints about that. But, Disney believes that they made the right marketing move, and that fans actually liked it. Speaking with Empire, Ryan Stankevich, Disney's SVP of Marketing, addressed the controversy over the spoiler-heavy promotional materials that rolled out post-release: 'Discourse is a great part of the Marvel fan experience. For as many people who complained, we saw a large percentage say they thought it was really clever. Some people also complained we didn't do *The New Avengers with a 'z'! But we welcome healthy debate.' Yeah, I'd say the fans that already saw the movie where the ones that thought the marketing was clever because it didn't hurt their movie-going experience. The studio rebranded the movie as *The New Avengers on posters and promo assets shortly after Thunderbolts opened, a move that many saw as premature, especially considering Marvel's usual spoiler-free grace period on social channels. Fans who missed opening weekend understandably felt blindsided. In the film, the twist unfolds near the end after the Sentry situation spirals out of control, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine publicly spins her ragtag group of heroes, Yelena, Red Guardian, U.S. Agent, Bucky, Ghost, and Bob, into heroes by branding them the 'New Avengers.' It's a big PR move for her. The post-credits scene then reveals Sam Wilson is putting together his own real Avengers team… and he's not thrilled. A lot of Marvel fans hoping for a surprise in the theater got a Marvel-branded reminder… nothing's sacred when the marketing machine kicks in.

Kevin Feige Talks Thunderbolts* Post-Credit Scene, If It Connects to Fantastic Four Movie
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige recently opened up about the mysterious post-credits scene in Thunderbolts* and what it could mean for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Speaking to Empire Magazine, Feige was asked about the post-credits scene. In it, the New Avengers can be seen talking about their lack of support from society when they notice a spaceship has entered orbit. After taking a look, the spaceship is revealed to be none other than the Excelsior, the Fantastic Four's ship. Although Feige confirmed that the ship does indeed look like the one that belongs to the group, he then teased that the ship might not be the 'same ship' people are thinking of. 'Their ship is the Excelsior, and there is a Fantastic Four ship entering the MCU . . . But I'm not sure they're the same ship,' Feige teased. Fans were quick to begin theorizing on what Feige could have meant. The leading theory for most fans is that the ship is being piloted by none other than Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom. However, it remains to be seen when the post-credits scene is taking place, as many have also theorized the scene could be a moment from 2026's Avengers: Doomsday. Thankfully for fans, more information will come soon when The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrives in theaters on July 25, 2025. (Source: Empire)
