USMNT advances to Gold Cup semis after hanging on for tense win over Costa Rica in penalties
The U.S. advanced to a Wednesday matchup in St. Louis against Guatemala, which upset Canada on penalty kicks in the opener of the quarterfinal doubleheader.

Mexico plays Honduras in the other semifinal on Wednesday in Santa Clara, California. The championship is in Houston on July 6.
The U.S. has reached the semifinals in 17 of 18 Gold Cups, including 13 straight since a quarterfinal loss to Colombia on penalty kicks in 2000.

Diego Luna and Max Arfsten scored in regulation for the U.S., which faced its highest-ranked opponent of the tournament in Costa Rica (54th) after breezing through the group stage with an 8-1 goal differential.
Alonso Martinez scored the tying goal for the Ticos in the 71st minute with a left-footed shot after Carlos Mora split Luca de La Torre and Arsten to take a shot on Freese and seize the rebound to set up Martinez.

CONCACAF changed the rules for this edition of the biennial championship for North America, Central America and the Caribbean, eliminating extra time except for the championship game.

John Tolkin had the first chance to win the shootout for the U.S. Keylor Navas knocked down his try in the fifth round. Freese then denied Andy Rojas with a diving hand, climbing to his feet while nodding his head and sticking out his tongue toward his cheering teammates at midfield. That set up the winner by the 20-year-old Downs.
Missing the tournament for the U.S. are regulars Christian Pulisic, Yunus Musah, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Gio Reyna, Antonee Robinson, Folarin Balogun and Sergiño Dest, due to a variety of reasons from injuries to rest to Club World Cup commitments.

The Ticos played without four key players. Forward Manfred Ugalde, who had three goals in the tournament, and midfielder Carlos Mora were suspended for yellow-card accumulation. Defender Ariel Lassiter (broken left hand) and forward Warren Madrigal (broken left leg) were sidelined by injuries.

Three of Costa Rica's six goals during the group stage came by penalty kick, and Francisco Calvo added another one in the 12th minute after a foul by Arsten. Calvo went low to zip the ball just out of reach of a diving Freese.
Malik Tillman, who had three group stage goals, put a 37th-minute penalty kick off a post and Navas knocked away Arfsten's attempt off the rebound.
Luna picked him up with his first goal in international competition by rocketing a shot off the chest of defender Alexis Gamboa for the equalizer in the 43rd minute.
Tillman made amends for his miss early in the second half by poking a pass ahead for Arfsten, who surged in from the left wing to send the ball into the opposite corner for the lead.

Christian Pulisic's first competitive match in nearly three months was, at once, a run-of-the-mill, early-round Coppa Italia win for Milan against second-division Bari and the first of many referendums on his summer of rest. Pulisic became a lightning-rod figure in American soccer when he opted not to play for the U.S. men's national team in this summer's Concacaf Gold Cup. After debate and blowback, he explained on a CBS Sports podcast in June that, 'towards the end of the (2024-25) season, my body just started talking to me, and my mind.' He felt that taking time to recharge would prime him for a strong campaign at club level, and then the 2026 World Cup on home soil. Pulisic wasn't necessarily at his sharpest in a 2-0 victory at the San Siro. But early in the second half, he led a counterattack, took in a Santi Giménez cross on the swivel and side-footed a close-range shot into the net. Heavily involved in the Milan attack during his hour on the pitch, Pulisic offering width and floating inside, often combining with midfielder Youssouf Fofana. He took corners from both sides. He had a right-footed shot deflected just over the crossbar. He clipped the bar with a left-footed shot. He swung in some dangerous crosses. The latest stage of his climb, though, appeared to get off to a decent start. Of the four leading contenders to lead the U.S. line at next summer's World Cup, only one was fit to start this pre-World Cup club season. Folarin Balogun of Monaco missed their opener in France's Ligue 1 with a reportedly minor injury. Ricardo Pepi has 'some fluid in his knee,' according to his manager, Peter Bosz, and was held out of PSV's squad for a second consecutive weekend. Patrick Agyemang, who moved to Derby County of the Championship from Charlotte FC after starting throughout the Gold Cup, is still recovering from hernia surgery. And then there's Josh Sargent. On Tuesday night, he put Norwich City on the way to knocking fellow Championship side Watford out of the Carabao Cup. Pochettino left him off the Gold Cup roster, and called it 'a football decision.' For his club, though, he's become integral. Advertisement A month ago, Sargent seemed on the verge of a transfer to Wolfsburg of Germany's top-flight Bundesliga. A fee upwards of $20 million had been agreed, but the player opted against the move. Now Manning, and many Norwich fans, have fingers crossed that he stays. Elsewhere, Chris Richards further cemented himself as a key figure at Crystal Palace. Haji Wright scored his first goal of the season for Coventry City, from the penalty spot in a 5-3 win at Derby. Brenden Aaronson and Leeds open their Premier League season Monday against Everton (3 p.m. ET, USA Network), though Aaronson isn't expected to start. And then, beginning Saturday, all of the major European leagues will be in full swing. Adams and Bournemouth host Wolves (10 a.m. ET, Peacock). Malik Tillman, who's been recovering from a 'minor strain,' could debut for Bayer Leverkusen vs. Hoffenheim (9:30 a.m. ET, ESPN+) in the Bundesliga. Chelsea 0 Crystal Palace 0: Pedro and Gittens make promising debuts
It felt like the first day of school after the summer holidays at the Bridge as Chelsea played out a goalless draw against Palace. There were a few new boys in the class, and one or two absentees, as the Club World Cup champions took on the FA Cup winners in the baking sunshine. Joao Pedro began up front (Liam Delap replaced him midway through the second half), while Jamie Gittens, signed from Borussia Dortmund as Jadon Sancho's replacement on the left wing, looked promising. With Levi Colwill likely to miss months of action after knee surgery, 6ft 3in teenager Josh Acheampong made a bright start deputising in central defence. The clean sheet will have boosted his confidence. But Chelsea really should have turned 70% possession into at least one goal, as chance after chance ended up in Row Z. Crystal Palace did manage to get the ball in the net, via an Eberechi Eze rocket of a free kick after 13 minutes. But the away fans' delirium was snuffed out by a VAR review. The Blues had only four weeks to recuperate after their summer adventure in the USA, winning the Club World Cup by defeating PSG and banking £85million in prize money along the way. So maybe it was too much to expect fireworks on the pitch in addition to the fireworks launched from the stadium roof before kick-off to mark their new title. "We created enough chances," said rueful manager Enzo Maresco, adding that he felt Chelsea deserved victory. Perplexingly for Chelsea fans, who overwhelmingly opt for Cole Palmer's name on the back of their replica shirts, he has switched from 20 to 10, taking over the in-limbo Mykhailo Mudryk's shirt number to mirror his idol Lionel Messi. New striker Joao Pedro has taken 20, which means the tills will be ringing in the club shop as weary parents are nagged for replacements to last season's versions at £100 a pop. Journalist: Chelsea reject shock £45m bid from West Ham for current star
Chelsea have rejected an offer of £45m from West Ham for Andrey Santos according to journalist Vene Casagrande. The Blues signed Santos from Brazilian side Vasco da Gama for a fee in the region of £13m, back in January 2023, but the youngster didn't make his debut until this summer's Club World Cup. Santos excelled on loan at Strasbourg last season, and scored ten goals as the Ligue 1 outfit qualified for the Conference League. West Ham have £45m offer rejected for Santos The Brazilian has attracted interest from a number of clubs this summer, but Chelsea have always insisted Santos isn't for sale. It' been reported Santos will play a key role in the squad this season, and despite the competition in midfield he's expected to get plenty of opportunities.
