Malaysia boosts Islamic NGO empowerment in Southeast Asia
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has reiterated its dedication to strengthening non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and dakwah institutions across Southeast Asia.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar emphasised the importance of regional collaboration in education, social development, and economic empowerment.
Speaking at the Mahabbah ceremony of the MADANI SEA Leadership Programme (MSEALP), Mohd Na'im highlighted Malaysia's role as ASEAN Chair in fostering Islamic community development.
'The Prime Minister's Department of Religious Affairs remains committed to empowering NGOs and dakwah institutions in Southeast Asia,' he said.
Key initiatives include the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) sponsoring 100 Cambodian students for higher education in Malaysia.
The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) is also actively involved in regional halal programme development and dakwah efforts under the MABIMS framework.
'This year, JAKIM is coordinating the World Mosque Congress and the Southeast Asian Islamic Youth Gathering with ABIM,' Mohd Na'im added.
Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (YADIM) continues to lead dakwah activities at regional and international levels.
The minister also announced plans for goodwill visits to Southeast Asian nations to enhance Islamic affairs cooperation.
He described MSEALP as a 'laboratory for tomorrow's leadership,' focusing on collaboration rather than competition.

During the session, he highlighted Malaysia's achievements, including strengthening nationwide connectivity, adopting a multi-faceted approach to infrastructure, talent, and trust development, and introducing data centre regulations to position Malaysia as a regional hub for data infrastructure. "I am confident that many more commendable milestones lie ahead. That said, I firmly believe that the next phase of advancement must be underpinned by robust and forward-looking policies and regulations. "At the Ministry of Digital, our commitment to driving this agenda remains unwavering. We will continue to strive for a digital future that is inclusive, secure, and sustainable," he said. Later in the day, Gobind held a bilateral meeting with Thailand's Minister of Digital Economy and Society, Prasert Jantararuangtong, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister. Gobind said their discussion centred on opportunities for regional collaboration in digital technology and AI, with a particular focus on transformative applications in the agriculture, health, and transport sectors. "Building on the relationship first established during ADGMIN, we reaffirmed our shared commitment to Asean cooperation in digital technologies and AI. As Malaysia assumes the 2025 Asean Chair, I extended invitations to the upcoming Asean AI Summit in August and the Smart City Expo in September, both of which will be held in Kuala Lumpur," he said. PUTRAJAYA, June 25 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the empowerment of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and dakwah institutions across Southeast Asia, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar. In line with Malaysia's role as the Chair of ASEAN, he said agencies under the Prime Minister's Department of Religious Affairs must continue actively implementing appropriate cooperation programmes in their respective fields at the Southeast Asian level. He emphasised that such collaborative programmes must be implemented, particularly to facilitate knowledge transfer, sharing of expertise and community empowerment through inclusive and sustainable initiatives in education, social development and the economy. 'The Prime Minister's Department of Religious Affairs will remain committed to jointly pursuing the agenda of empowering the roles of NGOs and dakwah institutions in Southeast Asia towards the development of the Islamic community in the region,' he said at the Mahabbah ceremony of the MADANI SEA Leadership Programme (MSEALP) here today. Mohd Na'im said the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) has sponsored 100 students from Cambodia to pursue higher education at University College MAIWP International and Dar al-Hikmah College.
