Thiruvananthapuram Gets Smarter with TSCCC Boosting Traffic and Safety
As part of the Smart City initiative, Thiruvananthapuram is witnessing a tech-driven transformation in urban traffic management through the Traffic Safety and City Command Centre (TSCCC). Conceived as an integrated command hub, the TSCCC functions as the nerve centre for regulating traffic, ensuring public safety, and enhancing city-wide surveillance.
After successful installation, extensive field testing and integration, the command centre was formally inaugurated on 6th February 2024 in the presence of Honorable Chief Minister Sri Pinarayi Vijayan, Honorable Minister Sri M.B. Rajesh, Honorable Mayor Smt. Arya Rajendran, Sri Nagaraju Chakilam IPS (IGP & Commissioner of Police), Sri Nidhinraj IPS (Deputy Commissioner of Police), Sri Rahul Krishna Sharma IAS, CEO and other notable dignitaries. The project was fully commissioned and operational sustainability secured via a 5-year Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) for continuous upkeep and system monitoring.
The utility of the TSCCC extends far beyond traffic management, emerging as a critical asset in law-enforcement and crime prevention. Access to high-quality surveillance footage has significantly enhanced evidence gathering, accelerated probe timelines, and in many cases, proved instrumental in cracking complex cases. In just a short span, police officials have tapped into the system 923 times, procuring video footages to aid major investigations spanning homicides, chain-snatching, robberies, two-wheeler thefts, child abuse cases, accidents, hit-and-run incidents, and missing person reports.
Several advanced technologies work in tandem to make TSCCC a powerful urban management tool in the city. At the heart of the system is the Traffic Control System, deployed across 57 major junctions.
Complementing this is the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), in operation at 32 high-traffic intersections. The backbone of ITMS includes Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras for vehicle tracking and Red-Light Violation Detection (RLVD) cameras for enforcing signal discipline. Together, these tools support round-the-clock monitoring and automated violation capture, boosting deterrence against traffic offences.
A robust network of city-wide CCTV surveillance further strengthens visibility and security. With fixed bullet cameras and high-zoom pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras positioned at 93 strategic points, the system uses AI-driven analytics to detect no-parking violations, wrong-way driving, unattended objects, overcrowding, and even conduct appearance-based searches. This 360-degree monitoring capability has vastly improved situational awareness for both traffic managers and law enforcement agencies.
The TSCCC project is a highly successful initiative and has been seamlessly integrated for the command control centre providing camera feeds 24*7 for the safety and security of the city of Thiruvanthapuram.

Man kills parents, brother in south Delhi; police looking for absconding son
Agency: New Delhi, Aug 20 (PTI) A 22-year-old man killed his parents and elder brother in their house in south Delhi's Maidangarhi area, police said on Wednesday, adding that he has been absconding since the incident. The accused, identified as Siddharth, is suspected to have some mental health issues and police said they have recovered documents and medicines showing he has been under psychiatric treatment for the past 12 years at multiple mental health institutions. The deceased were identified as Prem Singh (around 45-50), his wife Rajani (40-45) and their elder son Ritik (24), police said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan said police received a PCR call about the incident around noon. A team from Maidangarhi police station rushed to the spot and, on entering the premises, found Prem and Ritik lying in a pool of blood on the ground floor. Rajani's body was discovered on the first floor. 'The crime and forensic teams were called in for inspection. The scene was preserved, evidence collected, and photographs of the bodies taken before further medico-legal formalities," the DCP said. According to preliminary probe, Siddharth, the couple's younger son, was missing. Further inquiry revealed that he had been undergoing psychiatric treatment and allegedly told someone that he had killed all three of his family members and that he 'would not stay here anymore", police said. Treatment documents and medications belonging to Siddharth were discovered during a search of the house. Police claimed the records showed he was undergoing treatment for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and 'aggressive behaviour" for more than a decade. 'His history of psychiatric treatment suggests long-standing behavioural issues," a senior officer said. Enquiries also indicate that he had strained relations with his family due to his condition, he added. The officer said the house has been secured and the bodies sent for post-mortem. A case of murder has been registered, and multiple teams are working to trace Siddharth. Neighbours expressed shock over the triple murder. 'Three members of a family of four have been murdered. As for the whereabouts of the fourth member, only the police can provide information. The family often had conflicts due to the father's alcoholism," said Mohammad Shakeel Khan, a lawyer by profession. 'Whether he (Siddharth) is involved in the murders or not can only be determined after a thorough police investigation," Khan said. Mukesh Tiwari, a neighbour, described the family as 'quiet and decent". 'They seemed like decent people, at least from what I know. It was a family matter, and we weren't very close. I got to know about it around 2:30 pm. It was a family of four — husband, wife and two children," he said. Tiwari said Siddharth had mental health issues and had even run away from home 'two or three times, but eventually returned". 'The rest of the family had jobs; they were decent, working people and were never involved in any scuffles." Police said investigations are underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the killings. Police teams are scanning CCTV footage from the area, questioning relatives and neighbours, and have also alerted other states to trace Siddharth. 'The accused's mental health condition will also form a key part of the investigation. We are looking into all angles, including family disputes, mental health history and motive," the DCP said. PoP idols, DJs banned for Vinayaka Chaviti in W. Godavari
Authorities in West Godavari district have imposed a ban on Vinayaka idols made of Plaster of Paris (PoP) and the use of DJ sound systems during the Vinayaka Chaviti celebrations. At a joint review meeting held on Wednesday by Superintendent of Police Adnan Nayeem Asmi, District Collector Ch. Nagarani directed officials to ensure that only clay idols are installed at pandals. The Collector announced that a single-window clearance would be given for the pandals. She emphasised that only devotional songs will be allowed to be play at the pandals to maintain a spiritual atmosphere. Mr. Nayeem Asmi has urged pandal organisers to immerse idols only at designated sites in the Godavari river and canals. He warned of strict action against organisers violating the guidelines or playing indecent music.

2 arrested with 18 gram heroin
The Chandigarh Police has arrested two persons in separate cases registered under the NDPS Act, leading to the recovery of nearly 18 grams of heroin. In the first case, a police team from Mauli Jagran police station arrested Ravi, alias Gattu (20), a resident of Mauli Jagran Complex, during routine patrolling near Shiv Mandir, Makhan Majra. On spotting the police party, Ravi allegedly attempted to turn back but was apprehended. A search led to the recovery of seven grams of heroin concealed in a polythene packet. The contraband tested positive with a drug detection kit, and was subsequently sealed and taken into police possession. Ravi was produced in court and remanded in judicial custody. In a separate matter, a team from Maloya police station, headed by SHO Inspector Jasbir Singh, arrested Kajal (30), a resident of Sector 56, Chandigarh. The case was registered on the complaint of ASI Baljit Singh, who, along with his team, intercepted the accused during patrolling. A total of 11.10 grams of heroin was recovered from her possession. Kajal was arrested on the spot, and the contraband was seized following proper procedure. She has been remanded in two-day police custody. Police officials said that both recoveries highlight the ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking and street-level peddling in the city. Investigations in both cases are at an initial stage, and further efforts are being made to trace the supply chain and wider network linked to the arrested accused, said the police.
