Denied aid, yet undeterred: Corporation school topper Shriya's journey to Ethiraj College admission
CHENNAI: From washing and filling soda bottles two years ago to someone who is getting ready to go to the prestigious Ethiraj College for Women, life has come a full circle for D Shriya, a student of a Greater Chennai Corporation school.
Her journey – from being a school dropout in 2022 to securing second rank in Class 12 at the Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School in Saidapet with 565 marks out of 600 – is a quiet yet powerful story of resilience and determination.
She was forced to discontinue her studies after completing Class 10 at a private school in the academic year 2021-22. Both she and her younger brother, Nikylesh, had pending school fees amounting to around Rs 80,000 that their father refused to pay. Her father, a government employee in the law and order department and the sole bread-winner, was allegedly addicted to alcohol, the family said.
Having had enough, Shriya's mother D Sreedevi (42) moved out to a single-room rented house with Shriya and her brother to ensure their safety. Although they eventually managed to pay the pending fees and obtain transfer certificates from the private school, the children were forced to take a year-long break from school due to financial instability. Sreedevi took up a job at a specs company, earning Rs 13,000 per month. Meanwhile, Shriya began working at a soda company, washing and filling bottles for Rs 300 a day and an additional Rs 150 for night shifts.

Family of UP woman cop, found dead in May, alleges she was sexually assaulted
A 27-year-old woman constable of the Uttar Pradesh Police was found dead in her rented accommodation in Lucknow on May 27. Following the family's complaint, a case of abetment to suicide has been registered against the accused at the Ghazipur police Commissioner of Police (Crime) Babloo Kumar confirmed that Satwant is currently absconding and efforts are on to trace him."Preliminary investigation has revealed that the constable was under severe financial and emotional stress. We are conducting a thorough investigation, and further action will be taken based on the evidence," he said.

Rajasthan: Bank employee withdraws Rs 4.58 crore from customers' in Kota, arrested
ANI 08 Jun 2025, 02:27 GMT+10 Kota (Rajasthan) [India], June 8 (ANI): A woman employee of ICICI Bank in Kota allegedly withdrew Rs 4.58 crore from customers' accounts and invested it in the share market, police said on late Saturday, adding that she has been arrested. Sub-inspector (SI) Udyog Nagar Police Station Mohammad Ibrahim told reporters, 'Bank officer Sakshi Gupta took Rs 4.58 crore from 43 customers' accounts. A case has been registered, and she has been arrested'. 'Sakshi Gupta had invested this money in the share market through a demat account,' the officer added. More details are awaited. (ANI)

Muslims in their festive attire congregated at mosques and idgahs for morning Eid prayers, and later exchanged greetings. In Nashik, the city police implemented strict security measures. Due to large gatherings at Idgah Maidan, along Trimbak Road, for mass mamaz, a significant police presence was deployed. Traffic diversions were enforced on two roads near Idgah Maidan from 7am to noon. The mass namaz commenced at 10 am. Senior police officers present extended wishes to Shahar-e-Khatib Hafiz Hissamuddin Ashrafi. The security arrangement included 300 personnel, comprising two DCPs, four ACPs, 20 PI, 80 APIs, and PSI. Additional forces included riot control, quick response team, a bomb detection squad, and home guards. Police conducted patrols near mosques and maintained surveillance on social media to prevent objectionable content. In Kolhapur, the Muslim community celebrated Eid-al-Adha peacefully.
