Perak FMM Calls For More Engagement Sessions To Clarify SST Expansion
Its deputy chairman Mark Chan Chow Loong said this was important given that the expansion involves more than 3,000 additional items, raising many technical questions among manufacturers.
'As we know, the SST expansion was only recently announced, so many companies and manufacturers still require further clarification on how it is implemented and its impact on production costs.
'Therefore, these sessions are very beneficial as they provide a clearer understanding to manufacturers, especially regarding the list of products involved, exemption applications, and implications on production costs,' he said at the Special Coffee Series: SST Expansion briefing here today.
Also present was Perak State Development Corporation (PKNPk) chief executive officer Datuk Redza Rafiq Abdul Razak.
A total of 450 industry players and manufacturers from various sectors across Perak attended the session.
Chan explained that while the SST expansion has implications on the cost of raw materials, the impact varies depending on the type of product and the composition of raw materials used.
'For instance, in the plastics industry, raw materials contribute between 60 to 80 per cent of the cost of finished products. So any additional tax imposed will have a direct impact on prices,' he said.
Meanwhile, Redza Rafiq said the engagement session was not just a typical briefing, but rather a strategic and inclusive platform that brought together policymakers, implementing agencies, and the business community.

Sabak Bernam leads Selangor rice production with RM220 million sales
KLANG: Sabak Bernam has been identified as Selangor's top rice-producing district, contributing over 60 per cent of the state's total rice sales, according to the 2024 Selangor Agricultural Census Interim Report. Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin revealed that rice cultivation in Sabak Bernam spans 24,098 hectares, generating RM220.1 million in sales. 'This district also leads in agricultural holdings, with 9,296 out of 37,117 statewide,' he said during the report's launch. The district recorded the largest planted (44,123 hectares) and harvested (43,287 hectares) areas, driving RM1.64 billion in agricultural sales. Statewide data showed 95.6 per cent of holdings are individually owned, predominantly by farmers aged 46 and above (77.3 per cent). Mohd Uzir highlighted concerns over ageing farmers, noting nearly half are above 60. 'The sector relies on tradition and expertise, but attracting youth is critical for sustainability,' he added. The livestock subsector posted RM3.16 billion in sales, while fisheries contributed RM1.39 billion. Aquaculture, including ornamental fish, added RM196.4 million. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari launched the report, attended by state Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim. – Bernama

Cross-Border Insolvency Bill 2025 boosts FDI and economic stability
KUALA LUMPUR: The Cross-Border Insolvency Bill 2025 has been passed by the Dewan Rakyat, marking a significant step in Malaysia's efforts to attract foreign direct investments (FDI) and reinforce economic stability. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said emphasised that the bill aligns Malaysia with progressive international legal standards. 'By adopting the Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency (MLCBI), Malaysia demonstrates its commitment to transparency and efficiency in resolving cross-border insolvency disputes,' she said during her winding-up speech. The bill, approved via a majority voice vote after debates involving 11 MPs, establishes a structured mechanism for handling insolvency cases involving multinational companies. Azalina highlighted that the legislation provides clarity for investors facing financial risks, fostering greater confidence in Malaysia's business environment. 'Previously, cross-border insolvency relied on the principle of comity. This bill ensures formal cooperation between Malaysian courts and foreign insolvency authorities, offering legal certainty to stakeholders,' she explained. The framework includes clear procedures for recognising foreign proceedings and granting relief, supporting business recovery efforts under the amended Companies Act 2016. The move is expected to strengthen Malaysia's reputation as an investor-friendly hub, addressing globalisation challenges while safeguarding jobs and investments. – Bernama

RM3.3 mln aid for rural communities in Gua Musang
GUA MUSANG: The government has allocated over RM3.3 million to support rural communities in Pos Brooke and Kuala Betis through the Essential Goods Distribution Programme. The initiative, running from this year until 2027, aims to provide six essential goods—white rice, white sugar, wheat flour, cooking oil, LPG, and RON95 petrol—at prices matching urban rates. Kelantan Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) director Azman Ismail said the programme will benefit over 9,000 residents. 'This effort ensures rural consumers access basic necessities without price disparities,' he told reporters after the programme launch in Pos Brooke. Transportation costs for the goods will be fully covered by the government, with a contracted transporter delivering supplies from source points to rural sales centres. The estimated cost for Kuala Betis is RM1,185,409, while Pos Brooke's allocation exceeds RM2,187,840. Azman emphasised KPDN's commitment to improving rural livelihoods through this initiative. – Bernama
