Pennsylvania Department of Transportation driver license centers typically are closed on Mondays, but selected centers will be open on March 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to exclusively process Real ID requests.
The new federally approved ID cards will be required to board commercial airline flights or enter a military base and other types of federal facilities beginning May 7.

County identifies top crash areas in new plan to eliminate fatalities

After researching transportation trends for the past eight months, the Crawford County Planning Office's new initiative puts the county on the fast track for better safety. Its goal is to eliminate all fatalities and serious injuries on county roadways by 2035. Between 2019 and 2023, the county experienced 3,675 crashes on non-interstate roads with 220 incidents resulting in fatal or serious injuries, according to planning office data. The driving force behind the goal came from the county's current comprehensive plan, adopted in 2024, known as Crawford Inspired. To improve public health and quality of life in the area, the plan engaged various stakeholders and community members. Residents reported improved pedestrian, biking and road safety as a necessity. Now, the Safety Action Plan (SAP) provides a comprehensive strategy to enhance safety by identifying systemic safety challenges and 10 high-risk areas in the county. Then, it can establish clear implementation strategies. Crash data from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) revealed that 82 percent of severe crashes in the county occurred on just 16 percent of roadways and interstates, leading to a much more location-focused plan of attack. By identifying the top crash locations — like State Route 18 in Conneaut Lake and State Route 27 in Titusville — the county can develop targeted countermeasures. Data also showed that speeding and alcohol impairment while driving were among the highest factors of severe crashes, and one group — motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, and horse and buggies — were significantly overrepresented in severe crashes. That data will inform decisions down the road. 'We had a steering committee of 13 individuals including the townships association, boroughs association, CATA [Crawford Area Transportation Authority], folks from PennDOT, Ernst Trail group, the two cities had representation on it and this would allow us to move forward with unlocking some state and federal funding as well as addressing 10 of the most serious/fatal accident locations in Crawford County,' Planning Office Director Zachary Norwood explained to Crawford County commissioners during a work session Wednesday. Norwood told The Meadville Tribune that the plan is catered to adhere to the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program. Established under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021, SS4A must appropriate $5 billion from 2022 to 2026 for regional and local initiatives that prevent roadway fatalities and injuries. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation's website, $2 billion of that money remains up for grabs. 'We crafted a plan in alignment with that program to address the concerns and issues we are facing,' Norwood said, noting that there are state programs that they will be eligible for, too. 'We did a plan that will tackle lots of funding streams and give us the tools we need to be successful.' The road to success begins Wednesday as commissioners vote to adopt the plan and its goal. Then, the county will form an SAP coalition, invest in policy reforms and transportation planning, advance engineering projects, launch and support education and enforcement, and build capacity to implement the SAP through staffing and ensure accountability.

Uniontown Driver License Center to close for much of next week

The Uniontown Driver License Center will be closed for renovations during much of next week. Located at 855 North Gallatin Ave., the center will be closed from Tuesday to Saturday so renovation work can be completed, PennDOT officials say. It will reopen as normal on June 17. 'As part of the Shapiro Administration's commitment to enhancing customer experience, we're making important upgrades to our Uniontown location,' said Kara Templeton, PennDOT driver and vehicle services deputy secretary. 'While we understand the renovations may cause a temporary inconvenience, we're expanding services at our Waynesburg center to ensure uninterrupted access to driver licensing services.' PennDOT's Uniontown employees will be temporarily assigned to the Waynesburg Driver License Center at 1164 Willow Drive, officials say. During renovations, the Waynesburg center will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Photo services will be available throughout that period. Thousands in CT seeking a REAL ID. You'll have to wait to get one and it might be for a long time

Connecticut residents are scrambling to obtain a REAL ID several weeks after the May 7 deadline, with the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles inundated with customers and no appointment times available until June 17. 'Our staff is working tirelessly to keep up with the demand,' said Shaun Formica, director of communications for the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles. 'If you look at the numbers in the past couple of months we processed nearly 70,000 REAL ID transactions. We are more than doubling what we normally do.' Federal and local airport officials say the implementation of the REAL ID has gone smoothly. Even so, the demand to obtain a REAL ID may require longer wait times at the DMV, according to DMV officials. Formica said the DMV has opened on select Mondays, extended its hours and offered walk-in appointments to accommodate the increased demand during the months of April, May and June in which the DMV served more than 10,000 people. She added that residents who do not have a REAL ID but have plans to travel by air within the next 30 days can visit a DMV location for same day service. Residents who have an immediate need to register a vehicle may visit any DMV office Tuesday through Friday until 2 p.m., according to the DMV. Gary Pipkin, a Chester resident, said he bought a second vehicle several weeks ago and when there was an issue with the title, the seller was told that it could be fixed on the spot at the DMV. But there were no appointments available, he said. 'The sale has been delayed for weeks,' Pipkin said. 'She is sitting with a vehicle that she can't sell to me because she can't make an appointment.' He said he did not see online that there was a walk-in option. He added that he is concerned about anyone who might be living paycheck to paycheck and can't get an appointment to register a vehicle needed to drive to work and as a result the vehicle becomes impounded. Formica said she has received phone calls about appointments for REAL ID and has been able to get people in for walk-in appointments. 'If you are not traveling by air this month, it is not that pressing,' she said. She said the REAL ID has been in place in the state since 2011. 'We are doing our best to serve everyone,' she said. On May 7, travelers were required to present a REAL ID or a U.S. passport to board a domestic flight or access certain federal facilities, according to information from the DMV. The DMV states that without a REAL ID, residents may face delays or may be denied entry. In 2005, Congress passed the REAL ID Act 'to combat identity fraud and create a more secure verification standard for citizens,' according to the DMV. It is the federal standard for verifying one's ID. Formica said that AAA and Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union are also available to help residents with REAL ID upgrades and license renewals. Tracy Noble, manager of public and government affairs for AAA Club Alliance said in an email that 'AAA retail stores saw a dramatic increase in appointments for REAL ID in April and May as the May 7th deadline loomed and we are currently booking appointments in July,' Noble said. 'While we try to accommodate walk-in clients, volume remains high and we highly recommend an appointment as wait times may be significant if staffing allows.' Noble said appointments vary by location, with June appointments available dependent on the location. Daniel Velez, the New England spokesperson for the Transportation Security Administration, said REAL ID compliance has gone smoothly at Bradley International Airport with a 96.6% acceptable form of ID. 'Passengers who present a state-issued identification that is not REAL ID compliant at TSA checkpoints and who do not have another acceptable alternative form of ID will be notified of their non-compliance and may be directed to a separate area to receive additional screening,' Velez said. Velez said the maximum wait time at the airport security checkpoint was 14 minutes on May 28 and May 29 at Bradley International Airport.
