People never say it is a hero-oriented film: Divya Dutta
Often mistaken for a Bengali because of her surname, actress
Divya Dutta
's connection with Kolkata is one she never fails to talk about. She says, 'It feels good to be a Dutta in this city.' In town on Sunday for a wellness conclave named "The Common Thread – Together for Tomorrow's Wellness" hosted by Annantaa, the National Award-winning actress opened up about three decades in the industry, the changing landscape of working in films and what keeps the artiste inside her excited.
Excerpts:
'It felt like Yash Chopra relaunched me in the most unassuming way'
Talking about her big break in the industry, Divya heartily acknowledged: 'It was Yash Chopra's
Veer Zaara
that proved to be a turning point for me. But, I have to admit that I was scared of being typecast as the lead's best friend, like my role as Shabbo, Zara's friend.' My mom said, 'Do this role, you'll be remembered.' And she was right. When I walked out of the premiere, people were coming up to me for pictures.
I was relaunched in the most unassuming way.' She also recalled a time when she signed 20 films and later learnt that 18 never started, and that she was replaced in the other two.
She said: 'Rejection didn't sit well with me, but my mom would always listen patiently – having someone who listens really helps.'
Not like we didn't have women-centric films before, but they were always called 'heroine-oriented.' You never hear 'hero-oriented' films. Now women characters have layers, grey zones, and stories beyond the usual, all thanks to OTT

Even after three decades in the industry, Divya still approaches every role with the nerves, thrill, and hunger of a newcomer. For her, acting is pure instinct. 'Acting can't be learnt. Acting is a feeling,' she says. On the set of
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
, that instinct led to a moment of quiet magic.

'We were shooting a scene, and the director told me, 'Find the end yourself.' I was hugging Farhan and thinking, 'Is this the clichéd way to end?' Then I remembered an earlier scene where the father salutes young Milkha. I broke the hug and saluted. I didn't know where it came from. The set fell into pin-drop silence. That was the character's subconscious, not just mine.' Delhi-6 brought another turning point.
'When Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra called me, I asked, 'Is it a Punjabi role?' He said no.
I had a monologue and I was nervous – Waheeda ji, Om ji, Abhishek were all there. That day he told me, 'Let Jalebi' – my character – 'take over the scene. Leave Divya out.' I learnt a lot that day. It did magic.'

The actress said, '
People say, 'Ma'am, aap toh kar loge.
' But they don't realise, I'm approaching a new role, a new unit, every single time. That nervousness is important.' In recent projects like
Chhava, Bandish Bandits S2
and her upcoming
Echoes of Valour
, directed by Indira Dhar, she continues to break new ground.
'In my upcoming film, I play Shukla Bandopadhyay, mother of Captain Anirban Bandopadhyay. She visited us on set and told us stories about her martyred son. It was so emotionally overwhelming I had to ask the director for breaks. But I'm honoured I got to play her. The first look was launched at Cannes, and I'm so proud of it.'
Quotes:
Rejection didn't sit well with me, but my mom was my biggest believer
I came to Mumbai with many dreams and hopes, but the journey is not always glamour – you have to work hard. The industry doesn't say no to your face, but you never know if you'll get the opportunity or not

'I can't wear...' Director wanted to destroy THIS actress's career, was hurt by her decision to not..., later she..., her name is... Moushumi Chatterjee has cemented her place as one of the most admired actresses of Indian cinema. She was one of those rare actresses who actually started working as a leading lady in Hindi movies after she got married. In a recent interview, Moushumi talked about her career struggles, and how she lost out the lead role in Guddi, a film that later went to Jaya Bachchan, and became a milestone in her career. At the age of 15, Moushumi Chatterjee made her acting debut with the Bengali film Balika Badhu, alongside legendary actor, Uttam Kumar. Around the same time, she got married to Jayanta Mukherjee, and had received an offer from director Hrishikesh Mukherjee to work in Guddi (1971) . She turned down the film as her character was supposed to wear a 'short skirt'. In a chat with Filmfare, Moushumi Chatterjee recalled, 'I didn't do Guddi because the heroine was supposed to wear a short skirt. My father said no because firstly, this was a Hindi film, and because we didn't know who Hrishikesh Mukherjee was. He said I did Talaash only because I wanted to make up for what happened on Guddi. He said, I ruined your career.' Hrishikesh was so upset by Moushumi's refusal that he promised to destroy her career even before it began. Years later, while working on the 1990s TV show, Talaash , he confessed that her rejection hurt his ego, and he no longer wanted to cast her as heroine. That's when, the role was offered to Jaya Bhaduri (now Bachchan), and catapulted her to fame. 'He said… 'At that time, I was such an egoist. I thought you said no to Hrishikesh Mukherjee, we will see how you come and make a career in Mumbai.' He said, I did not want you to work on that movie. I don't want this heroine, I want that heroine.' Moushumi revealed. Moushumi shared that she was never comfortable with revealing outfits, and started wearing sarees at the age of 13. In the same interview, she recalled an incident when director Mani J Rabadi asked her to wear a backless blouse and short ghagra for a film. She started crying and told her husband, 'I feel like I am naked.' He then assured her that the dress was okay and not anything unusual for films.

Rashmika Mandanna says never let criticism 'weigh you down' after Sikandar's failure: 'Don't burden yourself with...'
Rashmika Mandanna has quickly become a big name in Bollywood, but she admits that acting was never her childhood dream. Her first Hindi film, 'Animal' with Ranbir Kapoor , was a huge hit. She followed it up with another success, 'Chhaava' starring Vicky Kaushal . But her latest movie, 'Sikandar' with Salman Khan , didn't do as well at the box office. In a recent interview, she shared how the pressure of success affects her and why she sees challenges as lessons, not problems. An unexpected journey into films Despite her fame today, the 'Geetha Govindam' actress confessed that acting was never on her radar during her early years. In an interview with Hindustan Times she said, 'To be completely honest, the younger version of me would have never imagined becoming an actress because it was never part of the plan. But looking back, I'm incredibly grateful I took that leap, because it truly changed my life in so many meaningful ways. ' Following what makes her happy When it comes to career choices, the 'Pushpa' actress follows one simple rule, do what brings joy. But instead of seeing criticism as something negative, she treats it as a learning experience. 'There aren't any hard lessons, but there have definitely been some valuable learnings along the way. One of the most important is to always give your best and put in 100%, but don't burden yourself with the need to please everyone. Focus on your own happiness and well-being first,' she said. She also pointed out that criticism shouldn't break one's spirit, 'Of course, it's important to stay open to constructive criticism, but never let it weigh you down or define your worth. And above all, go after what you truly want. Believe in yourself and claim what's yours because if you've set your heart on it, it's already halfway yours.'
