AI's medical hits and misses: Some patients get relief from years of suffering; others are misdiagnosed
OpenAI
president and cofounder Greg Brockman has claimed that artificial intelligence is beginning to make a meaningful difference in people's lives, particularly in areas such as medical diagnoses.
In a recent post on X, Brockman said, 'I'm hearing more and more stories of ChatGPT helping people fix longstanding health issues.'
He followed up with an anecdote involving a ChatGPT user, who had suffered from chronic back pain for over a decade. Despite trying physiotherapy and other treatments, relief had remained elusive.

With all else failing, the individual fed detailed information into ChatGPT — including history, pain triggers, and exercises tried. The user claimed this led to a breakthrough, with pain levels decreasing by 60–70%.
Not just ChatGPT
Back in November,
Elon Musk
's AI chatbot Grok made headlines for similar reasons. Users had begun uploading medical scans, including MRIs and X-rays, seeking diagnostic insights.

Musk had encouraged this and urged users to 'try submitting x-ray, PET, MRI, or other medical images to Grok for analysis', adding that the tool 'is already quite accurate and will become extremely good'.
Some reported helpful feedback. However, others were misdiagnosed, highlighting the risks of relying solely on AI for medical interpretation.
Promise vs precision
The role of
AI in healthcare
remains a widely debated topic, raising questions about its potential and its pitfalls.
A study led by Dr Hirotaka Takita and Associate Professor Daiju Ueda at Osaka Metropolitan University's Graduate School of Medicine explored the diagnostic performance of generative AI. Their research, reported by IANS, found that the average diagnostic accuracy was 52.1%, with newer models performing on par with non-specialist doctors.
However, specialists still outperformed AI significantly, maintaining a 15.8% higher diagnostic accuracy.
Meanwhile, a Reuters-reported study revealed troubling disparities. AI systems were shown to recommend different treatment paths for the same condition based purely on a patient's socioeconomic and demographic profile.
For example, advanced tests such as CT scans or MRIs were more often suggested for high-income patients, while low-income patients were more frequently advised against further testing — a mirror to the current inequalities in healthcare.
On the other hand, in October last year,
ET reported
that Mumbai-based AI startup Qure.ai successfully assisted in diagnosing tuberculosis in a patient, whose symptoms had confused several doctors.
Experts agree that AI has a role to play in assisting medical professionals, but its impact hinges on the quality and diversity of the data it is trained on. Caution is advised when using AI for self-diagnosis.
'Imperfect answers might be okay for people purely experimenting with the tool, but getting faulty health information could lead to tests or other costly care you don't actually need,' said Suchi Saria, director of the machine learning and healthcare lab at Johns Hopkins University.

SNB, Entally among 4 sites to get KMC EV charging stns
In a bid to curb air pollution by promoting electric vehicles , Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided to set up four more EV charging stations . Currently, the KMC electrical department runs three such charging stations. According to the member, mayor-in-council overseeing KMC electrical department, Sandip Bakshi, land has been identified in Beleghata, Ultadanga (off EM Bypass), Entally , and S N Banerjee Road for setting up the EV charging stations. It has already started setting up the charging station near Esplanade. It will have two 30 kW electric charging points only for four-wheelers. The proposed unit is being constructed at the eastern flank of KMC headquarters , at Hogg Street and S N Banerjee Road crossing. It will be operational soon. The lighting department of KMC has been supervising the work, and once operational, these will be handed over to the parking department. A Bangalore-based firm is setting up the EV charging station. It has installed several charging points for the NKDA in the past. "Though it depends on battery size, a completely drained battery of an e-car can be fully charged here in 30 minutes due to its fast-charging capacity," said an expert working with the project. KMC has roped in a Kolkata-based firm for setting up 12 EV charging stations across the city. According to the agreement, the civic body will provide space for setting up such charging stations and, in lieu, will earn a part of the revenue to be generated after these EV charging stations start functioning. The civic body is in the process of identifying land near its parking lots that will be handed over to the firm for setting up charging stations. According to modalities being worked out before inking a pact, while the firm may be allowed to levy Rs 12-15 (maximum) on car owners for one kilowatt unit of charging an EV, KMC will earn Rs 1.2 from the deal. An official said besides looking for land in locations identified for handing over to the firm, the civic body was also in search of plots in prime locations so that motorists find it convenient to charge their vehicles. KMC also recently made it mandatory for realty developers taking up construction of high-rises to keep 50% of car parking space reserved for EV charging points.

Software developers take note, Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan slams Anthropic over Claude access
Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan has slammed Anthropic for allegedly cutting off Windsurf's first-party access to Claude 3.x models (Claude 3.5 Sonnet, 3.7 Sonnet, and 3.7 Sonnet Thinking) with less than a week's notice forcing the company to make immediate adjustments for users, particularly those on the free tier. This is not a one-off recently accused Anthropic of deliberately keeping Windsurf users from accessing the new Claude Sonnet 4 and Opus 4 models on day one [May 22, 2025], unlike some competitors such as Cursor and GitHub little bit of context and reading between the lines is enough to state the obvious. Windsurf is a popular AI-native IDE (Integrated Development Environment) which is used by over a million developers globally - it was recently acquired by OpenAI, which is a competitor to Amazon-backed Anthropic. According to one far-fetched conspiracy theory on the internet, Anthropic may not want OpenAI collecting its data, both query and response, to seemingly train and improve its own AI. This could be a reason why it is taking these measures. Through X (formerly Twitter) and a dedicated blog post, Mohan informed that while Windsurf has some capacity from other inference providers, it's currently insufficient to meet existing demand due to the short notice window from Anthropic and so, users may experience some capacity issues with Claude 3.x models. He reiterated that this was a 'short-term' is actively working to bring new capacity online, he said, while launching a promotional scheme for Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro, offering it at 0.75x its original price while highlighting it as 'a strong alternative' for users during this had implemented a "bring-your-own-key" (BYOK) system for Claude Sonnet 4 and Opus 4 as a workaround for users to access these models through their own API keys from Anthropic. Now, it is extending this BYOK option to include the Claude 3.x models - while removing direct access for free users and those on Pro plan theory why all this might be happening, is that, with OpenAI now owning Windsurf, there is an off chance that it would start to limit options to boost the use of its own AI. At the time of writing though, Mohan has emphasised Windsurf's commitment to providing the best product and access to all models - including Anthropic's.'We have been very clear to the Anthropic team that our priority was to keep the Anthropic models as recommended models and have been continuously willing to pay for the capacity,' he said, adding that 'We are concerned that Anthropic's conduct will harm many in the industry, not just Windsurf.'It will be interesting to see how things pan out in the future.

OpenAI gives ChatGPT a memory boost so AI can remember chats, update available to free users now
If you are using the free version of ChatGPT, here is some good news for you. Once exclusive to Pro users, the ChatGPT memory boost feature is now available for free users as well. Launched in April, the enhanced memory feature now enables ChatGPT to offer more personalised responses by remembering your preferences and interests. This allows it to be even more useful across tasks such as writing, learning, seeking advice, and more. Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), OpenAI says, "We're starting to roll out a lightweight version of memory improvements to Free users. In addition to existing saved memories, ChatGPT now references your recent conversations to provide more personalised responses." advertisementTo test this feature and to measure how much your go-to AI model knows about you, just ask "Describe me based on our chats." Now, it may not have recorded the conversations that you had with it 6 months ago, but it has records of all the recent chats. For those granted access to the feature, OpenAI offers the option to disable it if preferred. As Sam Altman explained in a post on X, 'You can, of course, opt out of this, or memory all together. And you can use temporary chat if you want to have a conversation that won't use or affect memory.'advertisement To turn off the feature, simply go to Settings > Personalisation > Memory. From there, you can switch memory off entirely, preventing ChatGPT from retaining any information from your future chats. You also have the option to tap "Manage Memory" to review what has been saved or to erase it completely. It is noteworthy that chat memory is not a new feature, but OpenAI has improved it for the better. OpenAI improves Codex, its coding assistant Now for paid users, OpenAI's AI-powered coding assistant, Codex, is now being extended to ChatGPT Plus subscribers. Previously, access was limited to those on the Enterprise, Team, or Pro plans. With this broader rollout, independent developers and smaller teams can now benefit from Codex's capabilities, which are designed to streamline writing, testing, and debugging most noteworthy enhancement in this update is Codex's new ability to access the internet during programming tasks. This functionality enables the assistant to install packages, interact with staging environments, and run tests that require fetching online resources. However, OpenAI is proceeding cautiously—internet access is switched off by default. Users can enable it manually and specify exactly which domains Codex may access and which HTTP methods it's permitted to also noted that it is 'actively monitoring for prompt injection attacks,' where bad actors attempt to manipulate Codex into performing unintended web actions, in order to keep the tool secure and reliable.
