Australian embassy marks Women's Day with a panel on gender equality
The Australian Embassy in Cairo hosted an Iftar to mark International Women's Day, which coincided with Egyptian Women's Day on 16 March—the anniversary of the first women's demonstration against British colonialism in 1919.
Under the Australian theme 'March Forward for All Women and Girls,' this year also marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995. This landmark framework remains the most progressive and widely endorsed blueprint for advancing women's and girls' rights globally.
In his opening remarks, Axel Wabenhorst, the Australian Ambassador to Egypt, underscored the importance of continued progress in gender equality, noting that 2.4 billion women globally lack equal economic opportunities and that one in three women experiences physical or sexual violence in her lifetime.
The ambassador also acknowledged the devastating effects of recent conflicts and humanitarian crises on women and girls, including in Gaza and Sudan.
Ambassador Wabenhorst emphasised the significance of the event's timing, which coincided with several key milestones: Egyptian Women's Day, the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and Australia's new International Gender Equality Strategy.
'Launched last month, the strategy outlines how Australia is driving gender equality through action to protect and advance women's rights. It focuses on ending gender-based violence, pursuing gender-responsive peace and security efforts, delivering gender-equitable climate action and humanitarian assistance, and promoting women's economic equality,' he added.
Reflecting on the event, Ambassador Wabenhorst stated, 'When women march forward, the whole world makes progress.'
Following the Iftar, a panel discussion featured accomplished Egyptian women from diverse fields such as business, finance, science, development and sport. Soraya Bahgat, a social entrepreneur and advocate for women and girls in Egypt, moderated the discussion.

All panellists were honoured and received certificates of recognition from Ambassador Wabenhorst.
The evening was enriched by a violin performance from Mervat Shagar, a member of the Al Nour Wal Amal Orchestra—an ensemble of blind female musicians renowned for their exceptional talent and contributions to the arts. Shagar has previously performed in Australia.

In a visit to Egyptian Red Crescent warehouses in Arish, the Elders delegation, led by Helen Clark, former prime minister of New Zealand and Mary Robinson, former Ireland president, saw massive quantities of food and medical supplies, including basic medicines such as ibuprofen, stacked and ready for delivery to Gaza but blocked by Israeli authorities. In a stop at the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza, closed by the Israelis, the delegation listened to accounts from truck drivers who said their vehicles have been turned back by Israeli authorities multiple times without a plausible explanation. The Elders' visit to North Sinai comes amid growing international condemnation of the Israeli genocidal and starvation policies against 2.3 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Palestinian health authorities say more than 212 Palestinians, including nearly 100 children, have starved to death due to the Israeli blockade of the enclave. In tandem, the Israeli war in Gaza has killed and wounded more than 210,000 Palestinians and all but levelled the strip since October 2023. The Egyptian Red Crescent, in collaboration with the UN and its humanitarian partners, have sent 12 aid convoys to Gaza since 27 July to stem the unfolding famine among 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza due to the five-month-old Israeli blockade on the strip. They heard stories of patients in Gaza undergoing surgical operations without anaesthesia, as well as parents struggling to feed themselves and their children. North Sinai Governor Khaled Megahed assured the Elders delegation that the Egyptian health ministry is mobilizing all available resources for the treatment of Palestinian wounded and patients. The governor stressed to the Elders that the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza remains open from the Egyptian side, while Israeli authorities continue to close the Palestinian side of the crossing, effectively halting the flow of life-saving aid. Egypt, Côte d'Ivoire hold political talks, sign visa deal in Cairo
Egypt and Côte d'Ivoire held the third round of political consultations in Cairo on Monday, signing a visa waiver agreement for official passport holders and agreeing to deepen cooperation on a range of political, economic and security issues. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty received his Ivorian counterpart, Léon Kacou Adom, for the talks, which also covered regional developments of mutual interest. According to a joint statement, the two sides affirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation and coordinating their positions on regional and international issues. They agreed on the importance of exploring ways to elevate the relationship to the level of a comprehensive partnership, in line with the directives of both countries' political leadership. At the conclusion of the talks, the ministers signed an agreement on the mutual exemption of visa requirements for holders of official passports, a move aimed at facilitating the movement of officials and strengthening coordination between the two countries. Abdelatty praised the development in Egyptian-Ivorian relations, reflected in an increased pace of high-level visits and regular meetings between officials. He noted the success of the second round of political consultations last October, which resulted in an agreement to elevate the talks to the ministerial level. The ministers reviewed opportunities for cooperation in various sectors, including agriculture, livestock and fisheries, infrastructure, mining, health, transport, civil aviation and education. Abdelatty highlighted the capabilities and experience of Egyptian companies in supporting development projects in Africa, including the construction of roads and bridges and the localisation of pharmaceutical industries. In the area of capacity building, Abdelatty stressed Egypt's readiness to support Côte d'Ivoire in establishing a diplomatic studies institute. He also underscored Egypt's commitment to intensifying cooperation to support the counter-terrorism capabilities of West African nations, consistent with Egypt's comprehensive approach to combating terrorism through security, political, economic, social and ideological means. He pointed to Egypt's experience and tools, including field training programmes for armed forces and police, missions from Al-Azhar, and peace and development programmes through the Cairo International Centre for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding. The Egyptian foreign minister emphasised the great importance Egypt attaches to achieving security and stability in the Sahel and West Africa, given the impact of instability on the region and on Egypt's national security. The talks also addressed developments in the Middle East, the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, and ways to establish peace and security on the African continent. The Ivorian foreign minister praised Egypt's pivotal role in supporting the capacity building of countries in West Africa and the Sahel, as well as its efforts to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and ensure the flow of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people. The two ministers agreed to continue coordination in bilateral and multilateral frameworks, including the exchange of support for candidacies in regional and international forums. In this context, Abdelatty valued Côte d'Ivoire's support for the candidacy of Dr. Khaled El-Enany for the post of Director-General of UNESCO. Egypt confirmed its support for the Ivorian candidate for the position of Deputy Director-General of the International Bureau of the Universal Postal Union. The two sides also agreed on the importance of holding business forums alongside political consultations as a key part of efforts to boost economic and trade relations. It was agreed that the fourth round of political consultations will be held in Abidjan in 2026, at a date to be mutually determined.

Egypt to receive first train for Metro Line 4 in May 2026
Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, Kamel Al-Wazir, has met with the Japanese Ambassador to Cairo, Fumio Iwai, to review the progress of joint projects and discuss future cooperation in the transport and industrial sectors. At the outset of the meeting, Al-Wazir expressed his appreciation for the successful collaboration between Egypt and Japan on various transport infrastructure projects. He emphasized the Egyptian government's commitment to expanding this cooperation, particularly in transport and industry, to support the country's ongoing development. Ambassador Iwai echoed Al-Wazir's sentiments, praising the productive partnership between the two nations. He specifically highlighted the successful implementation of phase one of Metro Line 4, a key project that underscores Japan's significant role in Egypt's transport sector. Iwai also noted the growing interest of Japanese companies in investing in Egypt, citing the country's favorable investment climate. The discussions also touched on expanding cooperation in the home appliance sector, particularly between Elaraby Group factories in Egypt and Japanese companies. Additionally, the two sides reviewed the impact of a protocol signed between Egypt's Productivity and Vocational Training Department and the Education Development Fund, supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This initiative aims to enhance technical and technological education in Egypt, focusing on electronics and green energy technologies to meet both local and international labor market demands. Al-Wazir stressed the importance of providing practical training for students in Japanese factories operating in Egypt, allowing them to gain hands-on experience alongside their academic education. This, he said, will better prepare the next generation of skilled workers to operate advanced technologies in the country's growing industrial sector. The meeting also covered the ongoing success of the Automotive Manufacturing Incentives Program, which benefits the state, manufacturers, and consumers alike. Al-Wazir highlighted how the program has positively impacted car manufacturers in Egypt, including Japanese brands like Nissan. A key focus of the meeting was the development of Metro Line 4, which is being implemented with the collaboration of Japan's Mitsubishi Corporation. Phase one of the project, which spans 19 kilometers from 6th of October City to Al-Fustat, will feature 17 stations. Mitsubishi is handling the electromechanical works, depot construction, and supplying the rolling stock. The first of the 23 trains for this phase is scheduled to arrive in Egypt in May 2026, with the remaining trains to follow according to a set timetable. Looking ahead, discussions also covered the feasibility study for phase two of Metro Line 4, which will extend 31.8 kilometers from Al-Fustat to New Cairo, connecting with Line 6, the East Nile Monorail, and major transport hubs. Future phases include Phase Three, which will stretch 16.3 kilometers to Hosary Square, and Phase Four, covering 38.7 kilometers to the Capital Airport, with connections to the Light Rail Transit (LRT) network. The continued partnership with Japan is expected to play a critical role in transforming Egypt's transport landscape, with Metro Line 4 serving as a cornerstone of the nation's urban mobility strategy.
