Ministers tried to downplay incident, say oppn leaders
Kottayam: Congress intensified its protest against govt over the building collapse at Kottayam medical college hospital wherein a 52-year-old woman was killed. The irresponsible behaviour of ministers led to D Bindu's death, said opposition leader V D Satheesan at Thalayolaparambu on Friday. Satheesan said the ministers' remarks that the building was closed and no one was inside hindered the rescue operation. "Normally, if a hospital building collapses, govt should provide adequate compensation. But in this case, since the rescue operation was hampered by the ministers, govt has more responsibility," he said. He demanded that govt provide compensation of not less than Rs 25 lakh to the family of Bindu, who was killed in the building collapse, and to undertake her daughter's treatment and offer a job to a family member. Satheeshan said health minister Veena George was incapable of continuing in the position as medical colleges and other hospitals in govt sector were facing shortages of medicines and other materials for treatments. KPCC president Sunny Joseph, who visited the MCH and Bindu's house on Friday, termed her death as a "murder" alleging attempts by ministers George and V N Vasavan to downplay the incident. "The first phase was protests in front of medical colleges. The second phase of protests will be held in front of taluk district hospitals on July 8," Joseph said. Meanwhile, Puthuppally MLA Oommen on Friday announced a financial aid of Rs 5 lakh to Bindu's family from Oommen Chandy Foundation. Oommen had reached the spot soon after the incident on Thursday. IUML national general secretary P K Kunhalikutty said George should take moral responsibility for Bindu's death, accusing the minister of having handled the situation irresponsibly. In Malappuram, Kunhalikutty said, "It is not the minister's job to simply echo what officials say. Her response was extremely irresponsible. That is why UDF has demanded her resignation on moral grounds." Muslim Youth League activists took out a march from Vadakke Bus Stand area to the DMO office in Thrissur. Police erected barricades but the protesters tried to push the barricades and proceed to the DMO office, led to tense moments. Police then used water cannons to disperse the protesters.

Santanu Sen moves HC over suspension
1 2 Kolkata: Former Trinamool MP Santanu Sen on Friday moved the Calcutta High Court, challenging the West Bengal Medical Council's decision to suspend his registration. The move came a day after the council's president, Sudipto Roy, briefed the media about the suspension owing to the "infamous conduct" by Sen, who used FRCP on his letterhead. FRCP is a fellowship, which WBMC claims, is misleading when put on a letterhead. Justice Amrita Sinha granted Sen the permission to file the petition. The matter will be next heard on Monday. "During Thursday's hearing at the WBMC, I produced everything required to prove my FRCP. While I was told the council would let me know its decision, I learned from media reports about the suspension, though I am yet to get an official communication. This decision is illegal, done out of personal vendetta," Sen told TOI. An MBBS from RG Kar, Sen said he updated his PG in radiology with WBMC. He said his FRCP from Glasgow was an honorary title that did not need registration. WBMC president Sudipto Roy on Thursday told reporters FRCP was "not a degree but a fellowship and that putting this in the letterhead was misleading, amounting to infamous misconduct". Sen said he even deposited Rs 10,000 as WBMC to get his FRCP registered. "This decision to suspend Sen's registration is uncalled for as he has not violated any norms of either WBMC or IMC Act. It is unfortunate personal and political issues were seeping into professional issues. We hope justice will be granted by court," said psychiatrist Ranjan Bhattacharyya, joint secretary IMA Bengal.
