Singapore coach shortlist — Cannavaro, Kewell and a Europa League winner among notable names: Reports
According to Singaporean daily The Straits Times, over 60 people had applied for the men's team head coach's job, which included Italy's World Cup-winning captain Cannavaro.
Cannavaro, regarded as one of the best centre-backs of all time, is one of the three defenders to win the Ballon d'Or, after Franz Beckenbauer and Matthias Sammer. He led Italy to the World Cup title in 2006 and won two La Liga titles with Real Madrid.
However, he has failed to reach the same heights as a coach and winning the Chinese Super League with Guangzhou Evergrande in 2019 remains his only major feat.
Coaching China remains his only national team assignment, while his last coaching stint was in Croatia, with Dinamo Zagreb, where he was sacked after just 14 matches as head coach.
Another name on the list is former winger Australian Kewell, who won the UEFA Champions League with Liverpool in 2005.
A former head coach of Japanese side Yokahama Marinos, Kewell had also applied for the India coach job, where he could not make it to the final three-man shortlist.
Kewell had also been an assistant coach to former Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou during his time at Celtic between 2022 and 2024.
Nick Montgomery, another of Postecoglou's assistants — from Tottenham — is also on the list of applicants. Montgomery had won the A-League championship with Central Coast Mariners and the Europa League, as part of Spurs' camp this year.
Other names reportedly on the shortlist include former Indonesia coach Luis Milla, former Iraq coach Jesus Casas and former manager of Thailand, Mano Polking, who had led the War Elephants to the 2020 and 2022 ASEAN Championship titles.
The men's team coach spot has been empty since Tsutomu Ogura left the side, citing personal reasons, last month. Singapore, sitting atop Group C standings in the third round of AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, plays India next in October, a side which will also be under a new head coach.

We are proud to welcome Thomas to Vancouver." Restricted mainly to a substitute's role in the 2024-25 campaign, Muller made 49 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals. He retired from international duty in 2024, having won the World Cup with Germany in 2014. He finished his international career with 131 caps, scoring 45 goals. There had been brief speculation that he would land with Los Angeles FC, but the Whitecaps announcement came on the same day that LAFC were expected to confirm the signing of South Korean star Son Heung-min.

South Korea star Son Heung-min said he was "here to win" on Wednesday as Major League Soccer's Los Angeles FC welcomed the arrival of the "global icon" from Tottenham. The 33-year-old will reportedly cost an MLS record $26 million transfer fee, according to ESPN and The Athletic, after a decade in the Premier League where he became a household name. Gary Kirsten, under whose coaching India won the 2011 World Cup, has revealed his biggest challenge in the role. Surprisingly, it's not the WC-winning campaign but making a star bowler come to the nets for batting. 'The biggest challenge was getting Ishant Sharma to come down to the nets with his bat and pads and then to get him to face 48 balls in a Test match against England with VVS Laxman to win the Test match. That was a highlight for me to work on his batting. I really enjoyed that from a leadership perspective because he didn't think he could bat, and he still can't bat that well. But we kind of helped him get through that Test match and do really well in it," Kirsten said in an event on Thursday, as quoted by News18. Recently, Kirsten made a massive revelation on the campaign. He has said that all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, who turned out to be the Player of the Series in the quadrennial event, was not a certainty in the team that was set to be picked for it. Yuvraj had a dull 2010, but as fate would have it, he was trusted and picked for the World Cup next year. He repaid the faith by playing an intruemental role in India winning the title. Yuvraj scored 362 runs while also picking 15 wickets in the tournament. MS Dhoni -led India defeated Sri Lanka in the summit clash of the tournament by 6 wickets as the side lifted the World Cup after 28 years. "Thank goodness we picked him because it was flipping close, he was. It was not a slam-dunk selection. The selectors kind of debated around the 15 players," Kirsten told Kirsten revealed that he and the then India captain Dhoni both were keen to have the all-rounder in the team. "I was very keen to have him in the team as was Dhoni, because of the experience that he brought to the group. And look at the World Cup he ended up having," the ex-India coach said. "I was always very fond of Yuvraj. We had this kind of great relationship where like, he used to frustrate the hell out of me sometimes, but I just loved him. He was good. I just want him to be scoring runs all the time because when I watch him bat, it's just like amazing to watch," he added. Kirsten also said that Paddy Upton, then India's mental conditioning and strategic leadership coach, too played a role in helping Yuvraj reach his best. "But there was a journey he had to walk and credit to Paddy (Upton). Paddy did a lot of work with Yuvi to get him ready for that World Cup. Yuvi himself made some key decisions around getting himself prepared and ready for the World Cup," Kirsten said.
