Baptism Site wins best UNESCO World Heritage Site at 2025 GIST Acta Awards

AMMAN — The Baptism Site has been honoured as the Best UNESCO World Heritage Site at the 2025 GIST Acta Awards for Archaeological and Cultural Tourism, the Jordan Tourism Board (JTB) said on Sunday.
This award celebrates cultural heritage sites that stand out in preserving history, improving visitor access and promoting sustainable tourism, the JTB noted in a statement.
The award was presented on Friday during a ceremony at Sala Verde, Villa Vittoria Piazza, in Florence, Italy, as part of the global tourismexhibition dedicated to archaeological and cultural tourism.
Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Lina Annabhighlighted that this recognition boosts Jordan's reputation as a leading religious tourism destination.
She emphasised the Baptism Site's "deep historical and spiritual value," noting its role in promoting peace, coexistence and cultural diversity on a global scale.
'This award reinforces Jordan's mission to safeguard and share its religious and cultural heritage. It's also an open invitation for pilgrims and cultural tourists to visit the Kingdom and connect with this sacred part of the Holy Land,' Annab said.
JTB Director General Abdulrazzaq Arabiyatechoed these sentiments, pointing out that the award showcases Jordan's continued focus on religious tourism.
He stressed the Baptism Site's importance as a key pilgrimage destination for Christian visitors and a significant site for international tourism.
Arabiyat reiterated the JTB's commitment to protecting and promoting the Baptism Site, ensuring its historical and spiritual significance is preserved for future generations.
Situated on the eastern banks of the Jordan River, the Baptism Site is a UNESCO World Heritage site that draws pilgrims and tourists from across the globe, where its increasing prominence further solidifies Jordan's status as a hub for religious and cultural tourism.
This achievement highlights Jordan's success in safeguarding its heritage while positioning the country as a global leader in archaeological and cultural tourism, the statement added.

In 2024, Umm al-Jimal was inscribed on the World Heritage List. Its outstanding universal value lies in its status as a remarkably preserved example of a Haurani rural settlement that naturally evolved atop the remnants of a former Roman settlement during the 5th century AD, continuing to thrive until the late 8th century. The site's layout—residential and religious in nature—along with its distinctive basalt architecture, reflects the unique local architectural style of the Hauran region. A series of artistic and cultural events were also held on Saturday, including musical evenings at the Roman Theater in Amman. The Roman Theater hosted vibrant artistic evenings that began Saturday evening. Artist Saad Abu Tayeh then took the stage, delivering a musical performance full of festive spirit. The festivities will continue on Sunday evening, June 8, 2025—the third day of Eid al-Adha—with performances by the 'Oscar' dance troupe, as well as musical segments featuring singers Rami Shafiq, Tawfiq Al-Dalou, and Raghad Hijazi, in a family-friendly atmosphere open to the public. Located in the heart of Amman, the Roman Theater dates back to the 2nd century AD during the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius. The structure consists of three semi-circular tiers and can seat around 6,000 spectators. It was originally used for theatrical, musical, and athletic performances and is renowned for its unique acoustic engineering. In addition to the Amman events, a series of artistic and cultural evenings and concerts were also held on Saturday in Umm al-Jimal in Mafraq Governorate and at Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II Cultural Center in Ma'an. 571,000 Tourists Visited Jordan by End of May, Marking 27% Increase – Details - Jordan News
Director General of the Jordan Tourism Board, Dr. Abdul Razzaq Arabiyat, announced that the tourism sector has experienced a significant boost over the past two months (April and May), with a noticeable improvement in performance reflected in rising figures. He made the remarks during a meeting held on Tuesday at the Government Communication Forum, attended by Zaid Al-Nawaiseh, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Government Communication, to discuss the future outlook of tourism in Jordan. اضافة اعلان Arabiyat stated that the total number of tourists increased by 27% in May compared to the same period last year, reaching 571,000 visitors during the current month. He also confirmed that from the beginning of the year until the end of May 2025, the number of tourists rose by 25%. This growth is largely attributed to the resumption of air travel, including the full return of Royal Jordanian Airlines' routes, the launch of new routes, and the comeback of low-cost carriers, which introduced 14 new routes since April 1. These include 27 weekly flights from European countries such as Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, France, Germany, Italy, and Romania. Additionally, Wizz Air has launched six new routes to Amman from four European countries and one from Abu Dhabi. Arabiyat highlighted that the number of passengers arriving via low-cost airlines reached 102,000 by the end of May 2025, across 578 flights, with the vast majority being tourists — as only 14% of them were Jordanians.
