As a child in the 1950s, growing up on a cattle station in the dusty red Kimberley, Mervyn Street remembers finding a rock in his mother's kitchen, with numerical markings on one side. This, he would learn, was a 'black penny'.
'My dad had, on the back of the penny, three ones – 1, 1, 1 – I didn't know what that meant,' he recalls now, wearing a worn bush hat and sitting at Mangkaja Arts Centre near his home in Muludja community, east of Fitzroy Crossing. The numbers, his father told him, were ration entitlements for flour, tea and sugar.
Both of Street's parents were never paid a wage for their labour in their lifetimes; Street was only paid for his work for the first time when he was in his 30s.
His father, John, was a Walmajarri and Jaru man from the desert. He built fences, tanks and troughs on Louisa Downs station, midway between Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek. His mother, Penny, a Gooniyandi woman from river Country, would clean and cook on the station. As a boy, Street chopped wood or helped his father with the fencing.
Street was born in the traditional way: under a yellow hakea birthing tree known as a 'boomerang tree', although he is unsure if his birth year is 1950 or earlier. When he was around eight, or maybe 10, Hollywood westerns were shown at Eliza Downs, which inspired him to begin using charcoal and pencil to draw on the welded steel panels of a huge water tank on the property. He would draw the cowboys and cattle wranglers like his father, the tank becoming his first canvas, an artistic testimony to a way of life.
As an adult, Street would often return to the water tank to remind himself of what he learned growing up, about the communal way of life and a love of Country. His drawings, then later his paintings, would chronicle the lives of Aboriginal mustering workers – such as his father and Street himself on cattle and sheep stations along the Canning stock route, spending his nights telling stories by campfire.
Now comes Stolen Wages, Street's new exhibition at Fremantle Arts Centre as part of Perth festival, which tells the story of the wage theft inflicted on his parents, his people, on him. In recent years, Street led a class action against the Western Australian government on behalf of thousands of Aboriginal workers like himself; in 2023, the government settled, agreeing to pay $180m to these workers and their relatives.
Asked about what this settlement means to him, Street, whose first language is Gooniyandi, modestly agrees it was 'probably' a good achievement. He recalls sitting across the table from lawyers who had come to his Country to ask about life on the land and the withholding of wages.
'Long time ago, maybe the [white] working men used to get something like £7 [per month] but our [Aboriginal] workers got nothing,' he says. 'My parents had nothing. They worked for nothing.' And yet, he remembers a spirit of comradeship among all the workers: 'There was [a] good relationship when the European settlement came, [building] good relations, and they worked together, you know? That's the time people didn't have a boundary line, nothing. All together.'
But the work was hard. Street's father would accompany the muster, building cement tanks in the sand to draw water wherever the cattle went. Back at their tent home in Louisa Downs, his mother made bread and soup and taught the younger girls in the community to cook and clean. When at home, his father kept an eye to the weather
'When my dad saw there was cloud hanging around, he'd sing this rain song, and he'd get a feather of a white cockatoo and put it outside. I'd say, 'What you doing, dad?', and he'd say, 'I'm singing, I'm going to make that rain come' … when big rain came, that was the only time my dad stopped working.'
Street's grandfather taught him to ride horses, by putting Street on the back of a small donkey. This was the start of his own life wrangling cattle. When he told his parents he wanted to go out bush mustering, his father showed him the swag and cup he would need to pack on a mule. He was all set. 'It was a lot of fun for me,' he recalls of that time. 'I didn't care about anything, makin' my own way, learning about all the different jobs.'
At Fossil Downs Station in the 1970s, just north of Fitzroy Crossing, Street honed his skills at rough riding the newly broken-in blue-grey horses for which the station was known. (His 2018 acrylic painting Riding the Fossil Grey includes Street himself riding one such horse.)
Some of his other works are inspired by his mother, such as the recent My Mum Kitchen, depicting the same kitchen where he found the black penny, and which he drew on a lithographic plate for the Australian Print Workshop. Drawings from 1996 held in the Berndt Museum collection of Indigenous anthropological works at the University of Western Australia show his mother and other women collecting water from a soak near Louisa Downs station, then carrying the water to camp, as the men dig a well and build a concrete water tank.
Street's wife, a fellow Gooniyandi elder and artist, died in 2019. It is still not culturally appropriate for him to mention her name. 'He loved his wife dearly,' says Mangkaja Arts Centre manager Liam Kennedy, 'and from what I have been told, they were always together.' Street's son Fabian and his grandson Howard both live with him in Muludja.
Stolen Wages includes a replica of the water tank on to which Street first began drawing, and continued to draw; the original tank was removed from Louisa Downs Station three years ago.
'I didn't know I could come this far from all the time I was there on the station,' Street reflects. 'When I started doing the drawing on the tank, in the 1950s, I didn't know I was going to be involved with these galleries and take me on a journey.'

The once bustling green lawns of an old Sydney bowling club are now an abandoned wasteland closed off to locals after it was handed back to Indigenous owners. An Aboriginal land claim on the site - that sits within a large swathe of parkland from Waverton Park to Balls Head Reserve on Sydney's lower north shore - was granted by a court in 2022. The old Waverton Bowling Club has been abandoned since the land claim was upheld, with the grass overgrown and the building which once housed the club left derelict. Residents who used to frequent the park told Daily Mail they are struggling to understand why the site can't be put to use for the whole community to enjoy Chair of the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council (MLALC), which took control of the site, Allan Murray, a Wiradjuri and Kamilaroi man, had said at the time of the take-over the group intended to work with locals. 'We are thinking of creating a Cammeraygal cultural centre,' he said. He added that the group wanted 'everyone to share' in the site, including 'local people [and] local businesses'. However, the 'waste of space' it has become is even more stark due to its setting overlooking the Harbour Bridge and surrounded by Waverton Park, which is maintained by North Sydney Council and well used by the community. One North Sydney resident explained the site was still being used by locals at one point 'when the lawn wasn't that unkempt' but then they were locked out. 'They started putting up warning signs and blocking access the area. 'And for the last couple of years, it's been left here in disrepair, which is a bit of a pity. 'I don't know what's gonna happen, if it's still going to be a bit of a space for a community or if it will be completely blocked off from the community.' Gio recalled the old bowling club which now 'looks like a waste of space' is a far cry from its heyday when it would host concerts and bring people together. Kerry, who regularly walks dog Ninja through the park, added: 'It was a thriving bowling club once upon a time and, it's really a pity that it can't be turned into something the community can enjoy.' She said residents have been kept in the dark over the future for the site. Kerry supports the MLALC's right to the site because 'we took the land from them in the first place', but suggested 'community sharing rather than isolating people more'. 'I think it would be really lovely if [the site] could be put to some use,' she added. Ross, who played bowls at the club years ago, noted it was a 'pity' to have a green space 'so close to the city, not being used'. 'I can understand Aboriginal people deserve to take some of their land back,' he said. 'I just hope they can find an effective use for it.' The north Sydney resident voiced his concern the space could be rezoned in the future for new housing. 'I think we're so lucky here,' he said. 'The city's over there, and here we are in peace and quiet, and it's green. What could be better? 'It would be unfortunate, if it was to be converted into more apartments. I think the simplest thing would be to knock the whole thing down and make it all green. 'Have a beautiful, big green park. Why not? What else? You can't always have cultural spaces everywhere, Sydney's only so big, it's not Paris. 'A little bit of appropriate cultural monuments to celebrate Aboriginal heritage would be the trick and just a bit of state government money to tidy the area up. It can't be that hard.' Another local, Claire, echoed Ross's sentiment and stated 'the biggest concern for people around here is that it remains a green space'. The old bowling club which has gone to 'rack and ruin' was used by the local community as an exercise space, especially during Covid. 'We're not allowed on it anymore, they have a lot of security signage up every now and then, telling us to keep out,' she explained. A representative of the MLALC said they 'inherited a disused bowling club that is unsafe and has a major termite infestation'. The building on the site also has 'infrastructure issues such as an unsafe balcony, non-functional windows and doors, a garage that was left open to the general public and severely damaged external fencing'. The MLALC notes 'large numbers of trespassers, break-ins and more malicious damages' at the site. 'MLALC is as result of NSW Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 (the ALRA) currently undertaking a mandatory Non claimant Native Title application to potentially allow MLALC to use the premises into the future,' the representative said. The ALRA was established to return land in NSW to Aboriginal peoples through a process of lodging a claim(s) for certain Crown lands.

Mr Yahia hopes that the pedestrianised area in Upper Highgate Street may come to be known locally as Mayar's Square."She was a lovely, clever girl and everyone in the area knew of Mayar, she was so friendly with people", Mr Yahia City Council said it was working with the family and local community to "provide a fitting tribute to Mayar by creating a safer, more pleasant environment for everyone".Meanwhile, a man is due to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on 30 Tavener, 23, of no fixed address, has been charged with causing Mayar's death by careless driving, causing death while driving uninsured and two counts of causing serious injury by careless driving. An Indigenous Australian has said that anyone who calls themselves white is a disgrace to their families. Gurridyula, from Waddananggu in Central Queensland, sparked a race debate when he responded to a comment from TikTok user who called themselves a 'white fella' on May 2. In his response Gurridyula said people cannot be white, which he called a shade, and that anybody who does so has simply forgot where they came from. Gurridyula said he would never call himself black because that does not define him. Instead he calls himself a Mari, which refers to Aboriginals from Central and South Queensland. The whole debate kicked off after one user attempted to welcome Gurridyula to 'my country', Australia, as a white person. 'Sorry don't mind me, I'm just out here looking for your country,' Gurridyula said. 'You know, the white fella one, because I don't see it around here.' Gurridyula said anyone who defines themselves as a colour does not understand who they are or where they come from. 'There is no white fella there is no white. White is a shade, there is no black,' he said. 'You're not white, you disrespect your forefathers by calling yourself a shade. 'You call yourself a shade because you want to give up your ancestors because you left the home of your father's father's to come here for an economic benefit. 'Stop calling yourself white, white is not a race, it is not an ethnicity.' Social media users were divided on Gurridyula's take on race and many pushed back on his claims that so-called white people had abandoned their ancestors. 'I respect what you say [but] my great great grandmother was forced to come here at 14 years as a convict. She had no choice,' one woman wrote. 'We call ourselves Aussies, not white, not black, just humans born in Australia with the same right as you to live here. It's not my land or your land, it's earth, stop being so material,' another said. Others questioned Gurridyula's logic behind claiming that white Australians are not Australians. 'Born in Australia so I am Australian. This my home same as you,' one wrote. 'I'm just a human I dunno where I come from,' a second added. 'The only border is space. Melanin in the skin occurs based on where previous ancestors evolved in relation to the equator. It is an evolutionary trait, not a shade. All lands were once connected as one. Nobody own s***,' a third said. Gurridyula clarified his stance in the comment section of his TikTok where he said he was not trying to make people feel any less Australian based on their skin colour. Instead he said it was the 'narcissists' who tried claiming the land as their own that he has a problem with. 'If you fight to protect nature from destruction then you're always welcome at my fire brother,' Gurridyula said. 'There's no problem with people calling this place home, it's when they narcissistically want me to bow to those people.'
