Judge gets four-year ban for score manipulation in Paris Olympics qualifier
The Gymnastics Ethics Foundation (GEF), created by the sport's governing body Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG), investigated the case and found that Trikomiti had altered scores in favour of gymnast Vera Tugolukova.
Russian-born Tugolukova, who began competing for Cyprus at the end of 2022, clinched the final European qualifying spot for the Paris Games, finishing ahead of Poland's Liliana Lewinska.
Trikomiti, president of the Superior Jury at the competition, was found to have "unduly interfered" with the judges' work, after which the Polish Gymnastics Federation and some members of the Judges Panel made allegations of wrongdoing to the GEF.
"Ms. Evangelia Trikomiti is declared ineligible for a period of 4 years of all gymnastics related activities excluding coaching activities, starting on the date of notification of this decision," the GEF said in a statement on Thursday.
"Ms. Evangelia Trikomiti's FIG Judge Brevet is annulled. European Gymnastics is held responsible for the offence committed by Ms. Evangelia Trikomiti."
The GEF ordered European Gymnastics to pay 8,000 euros ($8,314.40) for the reimbursement of investigative costs. European Gymnastics acknowledged the decision and said it would consult with lawyers before considering an appeal.
Tugolukova finished in 16th place in the individual all-around competition in Paris.
The GEF said it could not stop the 16-year-old from competing in the Olympics because it was not a 'field of play' decision.
In a statement, the Cyprus Gymnastics Federation (CGF) said it acknowledged and would "thoroughly review" the GEF's ruling.
"We are committed to taking all necessary actions in accordance with the law and ensuring that the appropriate measures are implemented," the CGF said.
It is not the first time that gymnastics has had to contend with improper judging, with the World Championships in 1966 and the 1964 Olympics among notable competitions where questions were raised about the judging.

'I would love to take Livi back to Hampden'
Livingston manager David Martindale has set himself a target of taking the club to another national final at Hampden and potentially earning a European place with the West Lothian signed a new contract with Livingston last week, keeping him at the club until the summer of 51-year-old joined Livi in 2014 initially as a volunteer but worked his way up the ladder eventually becoming manager in 2020."I would love to take the club to a cup final," he said. "We won a cup (Challenge Cup) last year with fans. "We got to a cup final in previous years at Hampden with no fans. So, one of the main ambitions is I would like to take the club back to Hampden."Whether that's a semi-final, whether that's a final, it's a big ambition for me."However, Martindale is wary of aiming too high too soon, and says they must first consolidate their top-flight status."I'd love to have a shot at European football with Livingston," he said. "But to do that, you need to consolidate in the league and you need to get a top-six finish."But we've shown as a club, shown as a group, staff, myself included, that we're more than capable of getting top six."We're more than capable of getting the cup finals. But I think the short-term aspirations this season is consolidating the league."But longer-term objective is always going to be taking the club back to Hampden with fans behind us. John Souttar insists Rangers have belief they can turn Club Brugge tie around
Rangers defender John Souttar believes the club's recent form in Europe means they can travel to Bruges knowing they can rescue their Champions League hopes. A 3-1 first leg to Club Brugge at Ibrox means the play-off is very much in the hands of the Belgians, and Rangers would need victory by two goals even to force extra time in the tie. That's a tough task against a side who reached the last 16 of the Champions League last year. Souttar admits Rangers' first half showing on Tuesday, where they lost three goals in the first 20 minutes, was unacceptable but says they can take heart from a better performance after the break and that the tie is certainly not over. 'There is the belief,' the defender said. 'We have had big results in Europe away from home in the last few years so there is that belief but there is no point in saying it, we have to show it next week.' Reflecting on that dismal start to a huge game, Souttar said they had been stunned by early mistakes. Nasser Djiga made the wrong call to let Romeo Vermant run through on goal and lift a cool finish over a stranded Jack Butland after just three minutes and things went from bad to worse when Jorner Spillers scored after Christos Tzolis' corner. Brandon Mechele scored the third goal of an explosive start when he fired in a tremendous shot from outside the box after just twenty minutes. Souttar believes the reaction was good after the break but that the damage had been done. 'In the first half, I think we've actually shot ourselves in the foot,' the Scotland international said. 'How we started, when you give away goals that we did. I mean it makes any game difficult, but especially a game like that when there's so much at stake and when you're playing a team of that quality. 'Second-half, we were a bit better, obviously made them a bit more uncomfortable, but first half the damage was done 'I think you can plan for anything, but you can't plan for losing two goals like that. Especially on an occasion like that. It was up to us to to react and we did a bit second-half, but we got the goal back. 'We've got to go there next week and give everything and see what happens.' Rangers were booed off at half-time, and Souttar said that the early setbacks has robbed the side of the noisy backing that can be a huge positive on big nights at Ibrox. 'When we have had good European nights, Ibrox is a place where opposition teams don't feel comfortable and I think we gave them that comfort. 'So if you give teams that comfort, it is a lot easier for them to play out from the back and take that pass, that risk, be more relaxed, and we give them that luxury. 'And it's important when you have European games here that we get the crowd on our side, we make them uncomfortable, that is one of our biggest assets. 'So you see what happens when we don't do that.'
