The one rule that has Stephen Kenny pining for the introduction of VAR in LOI

Stephen Kenny says his frustration with recent rulings on one aspect of the game in particular has turned him into an advocate for the introduction of VAR into the League of Ireland.
Simon Power last week became the latest St Patrick's Athletic player to have a goal chalked off for offside.
And as with previous strikes by Zach Elbouzedi and Jake Mulraney, Kenny reckons the Saints were hard done by.
Thursday night's Europa Conference League opponents Hegelmann play in the Lithuanian top-flight - and despite low attendances and small stadiums, they have VAR in their domestic league.
'I was at their game at the weekend, I was watching it live, and they have VAR. So in Lithuania they have it in their league games,' said Kenny.
As for the League of Ireland, he added: 'Yeah, I would (like to see it introduced), particularly for the offsides.
'I don't know about everything else, but Zach Elbouzedi has had two goals disallowed for offside this season; one in the opening game against Drogheda.

'Jake Mulraney has had an absolutely brilliant header disallowed in the Brandywell to go one-up, and then the other night Simon Power has had a goal, which would have been nearly goal of the season in terms of Ryan wins it, Aido sets it, Jamie plays it through, it was a great goal, but that's chalked off.
'I like the offsides, they have it in Lithuania. How do they have it with the resources they have? They've not got big crowds or they've not got major grounds. It's 1,500-capacity in a small ground.
'I don't know what the costs involved are, I don't know how practical it is and I'm not sure what's involved in it. But they have it. I'd like it for the offsides, for sure.'

Sligo Rovers' Patrick McClean has red card against St Pat's overturned on appeal

PATRICK MCCLEAN IS free to play for Sligo Rovers in their next League of Ireland Premier Division fixture after his controversial red card against St Patrick's Athletic on Sunday was overturned. With the game level at 0-0 at Richmond Park, Rovers were reduced to 10 men when McClean received a straight red card for a foul on Mason Melia despite clearly not being the last defender, with Sebastian Quirk in position to cover. Advertisement Referee Damien MacGraith's misinterpretation of the situation saw him send off McClean, with Pats going on to win the game 3-0 against 10 men. The result left Sligo Rovers just seven points above bottom-placed Cork City in the race to avoid relegation. The League of Ireland today confirmed that Sligo Rovers' appeal for wrongful dismissal against McClean had been upheld by an independent appeal committee of the FAI, which means the Derry-born centre-back will no longer be suspended for one league match. McClean, the 28-year-old younger brother of Republic of Ireland centurion James McClean, returned to Sligo Rovers in June after seven years with Derry City and Glentoran. He has been a standout performer for John Russell's side since his arrival from Glentoran this summer for an undisclosed fee, scoring two goals from centre-back in his five appearances to date.

Sligo Rovers red card appeal result is in as Patrick McClean learns his fate

Sligo Rovers have won their appeal against the red card handed to defender Patrick McClean during Sunday's Premier Division clash with St Patrick's Athletic. The game was scoreless when McClean received his marching orders from referee Damien MacGraith, minutes before the half-time break. Within 15 minutes of the restart, the Saints were three-up, and they could have scored more as they claimed an easy win in what had been, up to McClean's sending off, a cagey affair. And just as Sargeant's red card was overturned, McClean has been informed that he will not have to serve a suspension on August 22 against Waterford. According to a statement from the League of Ireland office: 'An Independent Appeal Committee of the FAI has upheld Sligo Rovers FC's appeal for wrongful dismissal following Patrick McClean's red card in Sligo Rovers FC's SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division fixture versus St. Patrick's Athletic FC on 10 August 2025. If you're curious, you can read our Privacy Notice . Rovers boss Russell was frustrated in the aftermath of Sunday's defeat. Asked if the club would appeal, he replied: 'Yeah, we have to (appeal). Thankfully we did get one overturned last week. 'But it's hard as a manager because you don't want to be complaining all the time about decisions, because you want the game to be played in the right manner, and we want to play the right way and Pat's want to play the right way, but the game was spoiled by the decision.' He added: 'I think everyone in the ground bar the man in the middle could see it was never a red card. (There was) a covering defender. That changes the game, there is no doubt about it. 'It ruined it. It's very frustrating, we've come up here to try and get a result. We are fighting for our lives and it has changed the game, and we have ended up coming down the road with a 3-0 defeat.' Asked if he had a word with the official, he replied: 'I did just briefly at the very end of the game and he said, 'I'll have to have a look back, but for me it was a red'.'
