Deletion of 65 lakh names just the beginning, says Yogendra Yadav on draft Bihar voter list
Mr. Yadav said 'the real game begins now'. The category called 'not recommended by the Booth Level Officer' would come up for special scrutiny and that was going to be the first candidate for deletion, he said, adding that those people who would fail to submit documents in the next one month could also face deletion. 'The numbers could be huge,' Mr. Yadav said, and maintained that if anyone objected, a lot of other voters could also find their names deleted from the list. 'On these three grounds, people may still be eliminated. So 65 lakh is just the beginning,' he said.
The political analyst said that in the two districts which had higher concentration of Muslim population, Purnia and Kishanganj, the proportion was slightly below the State level. 'But not dramatically so, not alarmingly so,' Mr. Yadav said. 'The EC has been proclaiming from the rooftop that they have made these deleted names available to the political parties. Where is the list? Sadly, the EC has not released that list and the format in which the EC has released the information today makes it virtually impossible to compare it with the previous list,' he added. 'It is virtually impossible to extract that information, and that is not befitting a constitutional authority like the EC. The list conceals more than it reveals,' he said.
Mr. Yadav urged that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise should be scrapped right away. 'It is absolutely unconstitutional exercise. This is not just an exercise for revision of electoral roll. It is an exercise for changing the architecture of India's universal adult franchise. For the first time, the onus is being put on the voter and the presumption is of non-citizenship. These two fundamental things go against the very tenets of universal adult franchise in a country like India,' he said.

"Jakhar had turned down a demand for a discussion in the House on the Election Commission's functioning given that the poll panel is conceived as an independent entity. It is on record, so they better check it and then talk," Meghwal said. On Goa government's renewed push for a Bill to reserve Assembly seats for Scheduled Tribes in the state, Meghwal said, "The population of Scheduled Tribes has increased in Goa but currently there is not a single MLA from the community in the state Assembly. Under the Bill which we are bringing, seats for the ST category will increase in the Assembly." "We are talking about the interests of the ST community, for which we are bringing the Bill. But the Opposition, including the Congress, does not want to discuss this issue. Their objective is not understandable," he added. Asked about the objections raised by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and leaders of some opposition parties on CISF deployment in Rajya Sabha's Well, Meghwal, who is also the minister of state for parliamentary affairs, said an incident had happened in the Lok Sabha where two men jumped off the visitors' gallery. "This was a decision taken by the Lok Sabha speaker and Rajya Sabha chairman. What does the government has to do with it? They (Opposition) should talk to the Chair about this," Meghwal said. There was a major security breach during Zero Hour in Lok Sabha in December 2023 when two men, both carrying canisters emitting yellow smoke, jumped off the visitors' gallery and ran into the Lok Sabha chamber. Asked about the status of the ongoing process regarding the removal of Justice Yashwant Verma over the alleged recovery of a large sum of unaccounted cash from his official residence in Delhi, the law minister said the matter is pending with the Lok Sabha speaker.
