Dutch Soccer Player Quincy Promes Extradited From Dubai To Face Prison In Cocaine Smuggling Case
The Dutch public prosecution service confirmed to the AP that Promes was en route to the Netherlands in Dutch custody. Promes, who scored seven goals in 50 international matches for the Netherlands before legal issues derailed his international career, was convicted last year of complicity in cocaine smuggling and sentenced in his absence to six years in prison. Amsterdam District Court ruled that Promes was involved in the import and export of hundreds of kilograms of cocaine in 2020. His lawyers told judges he denied the allegations.
In 2023, Promes was found guilty of stabbing his cousin in the leg and was sentenced to 18 months in prison. Both of Promes' convictions are currently under appeal. Promes, a 33-year-old former player for Ajax and Sevilla, had been playing for Spartak Moscow and living in Russia from 2021 until last year, when he was reportedly arrested in Dubai around the time that Spartak was there for friendly games. More recently, he had been playing with United FC, a second-tier club in Dubai.

Dubai police retrieve stolen diamond worth $25 million
DUBAI: Dubai police said on Monday they caught three thieves just hours after they stole a precious pink diamond worth $25 million. 'The Dubai Police General Command has foiled the theft of a very rare pink diamond, valued at $25 million,' the police said in a statement shared by the United Arab Emirates' official news agency WAM. A diamond trader who had brought the jewel from Europe was lured to a villa by a crime gang under the pretense of a viewing by a potential wealthy client, police said. But the gem was stolen when the diamond dealer arrived for the bogus inspection, the statement added. Within eight hours three people from an unspecified Asian country were arrested 'thanks to the efforts of specialized and field teams, and by using the latest artificial intelligence technologies,' police said. Video footage shared by the Dubai Media Office showed the three men with their faces blurred after their arrest as well as CCTV footage of the gang. Dubai is an important hub for diamond trading. Tightly controlled and policed, the UAE prides itself on its security and stability.

One person killed after hot air balloon crash in Netherlands
One person was killed and five others were injured when a hot air balloon crash-landed late Wednesday in a meadow in Friesland, a province in the north of the Netherlands, local authorities said. The balloon was carrying 34 passengers when it came down quickly around 9 p.m., hitting the ground hard, authorities said. Police have launched an investigation into the accident. A spokesperson for the Royal Netherlands Aeronautical Association told local media that a sudden gust of wind caused the balloon to strike the ground forcefully, making the basket bounce and throwing five people out.
