Ryan Johnson's own goal gifts Luton all three points in League One opener
It was the first time since 2019 Luton had played at this level and an immediate return to the Championship looked like being anything but straightforward as Johnnie Jackson's visitors, fresh from victory in the League Two play-off final, contained them with relative ease for much of the match.
The opening 45 minutes saw the teams muster two shots on goal between them, both off target and one of which landed on the roof of the Oak Stand behind Wimbledon goalkeeper Bishop.
Visiting defender Joe Lewis might have been lucky to escape harsher punishment when he halted a clear run on goal for Wells, receiving just a yellow card for tripping the Hatters debutant when seemingly the last man.
Reuell Walters finally had Luton's first shot on target after 63 minutes, drawing an outstanding one-handed save from Bishop with a drilled half-volley from range.
Wimbledon looked to have done enough to earn a point, but then came Johnson's unfortunate wayward header to gift the Hatters victory.

Louth beat Antrim to win All-Ireland Junior title
Antrim were denied a first All-Ireland Junior Football Championship since 2022 after losing to Louth by 0-13 to 1-9 at Croke Devlin netted a third-minute penalty for the Saffrons after Theresa Mellon was fouled within the square. Thomas Partey agrees transfer move to new club after Arsenal exit
Thomas Partey has reached an agreement with his next club after leaving Arsenal as a free agent. The Ghana midfielder ended his five-year spell at the Emirates Stadium at the end of the 2024-25 season. Partey made 167 appearances for the Gunners and almost helped them win the Premier League twice. Mikel Arteta was reportedly keen for Partey to sign a contract extension but a deal could not be reached. The 32-year-old was linked with several European clubs as he contract with Arsenal ran down and Villarreal have won the race to secure his signature. Spanish outlet AS say Villarreal, who finished fifth in La Liga last season, have agreed a one-year deal with Partey. It is claimed Partey is expected to become a Villarreal player next week after he gave the move the green light. If Partey's move to Villarreal goes through, he will join his former Arsenal teammate Nicolas Pepe at the Spanish club. Shortly after he left Arsenal, Partey was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The offences are reported to have taken place in 2021 and 2022, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement. Partey denies the charges and 'welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name', his lawyer said. Manchester United are hoping to turn a corner under Ruben Amorim as they prepare for the start of the 2025-26 season and the manager is confident he can reverse their fortunes with a new leadership group at Old Trafford Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim will look to six players to lead the team this season after forming a new leadership group - with captain Bruno Fernandes being followed by Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martinez, Tom Heaton and Noussair Mazraoui. Amorim is hoping for a clean slate in the 2025-26 season as he looks to turn the club's fortunes around following a disastrous last campaign that saw them finish 15th in the Premier League. The former Sporting Lisbon boss came under fire after failing to stop the rot after making their worst ever start to a league season under Erik ten Hag, who was sacked last October. Amorim has attempted to overhaul his squad after sending Marcus Rashford out on loan, while Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia have also been told to find new clubs. Christian Eriksen, Viktor Lindelof and Jonny Evans were released. He has started his rebuild by signing two high-profile players in forwards Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, who arrived for £63.5m and £71m respectively, but Amorim is not happy to stop there as he also looks to bring in Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig. And the manager has also outlined plans for a leadership group who he hopes can give the team more stability this season - after watching the team fall apart and succumb to 17 league defeats in 2024-25. "We have a leadership group now," Amorim said during a wide-ranging interview. "It's not just Bruno. It's not just Harry. It's six guys. They are responsible for the group. "There are some things that in the last year I had to deal with and I said to them this season, you deal with that. Small issues are with you guys. You're responsible. All these small changes, but I think it's helping the group. We have Bruno, we have Harry, Licha [Martinez], Diogo, Tom and Nous. "So it's not just the oldest ones. Nous is in the group because he's a character that I like and I try to understand the dynamic of the group I try to reach every space. They are the guys responsible for keeping everyone in line. 'I feel we're more organised now. We're so much better. What we eat, the way we behave on tour, on the pitch, the rules. I know they're not kids and I don't treat the players like kids. But I think these small rules can help a group to be strong. We have rules, and the rules are not to treat the players as babies. "I treat them as men, but they have rules now and that can change the way you train. If you don't train in the right way, I have footage to show you - and I will show you in front of everybody. So I'm always on top. But in one sense I don't expect or need to do anything, because they will push each other. But if you train badly one time, I will show you the image. I will not speak with you, just speak. I will show everything." In the same interview, Amorim revealed he wanted to stay at United for 20 years and said he was confident of bringing the good times back to the club - but also admitted he feared going to games last season knowing knowing his side could lose games. "To tell you the truth, it's not how I returned to my house after the games but how I left to go to the games," he said. "All the struggles that we had in the games, I feel it before the games. So that is the hardest part. To go to the games and know that we are not going to be competitive."
