AFRY secures Breganzona tunnel planning contract in Switzerland
Swedish company AFRY, within the Tram Ticino consortium, has secured the planning contract for the Breganzona tunnel in Switzerland, a significant development for the local public transport network. AFRY, collaborating with engineering companies Pini and Lombardi, has been awarded the contract for the tunnel by Rete Tram-Treno del Luganese. The new Tram-Treno network in Lugano will connect the city centre with the Malcantone and Vedeggio valleys, aiming to reduce travel time and emerge as a more sustainable transport option. The redesign of the network is also anticipated to triple its capacity, from the current 7,500 passengers per day to 20,000 in the future. The underground station Lugano - Railway Station SBB, situated 40m below the new underpass, will become an intermodal hub, linking trams, trains, and city buses. This integration will connect the new network with regional and national transport systems. The first phase of the Tram-Treno network is targeted to commence operations by 2035. AFRY's involvement in the project is thereby expected to span the next ten years, with the planning contract valued at approximately Skr120m ($12.3m). AFRY Switzerland country manager Marcel Winter said: "We are pleased to be able to use our expertise to bring this complex inner-city project from the planning stage to life, thus contributing to a sustainable transport solution.' AFRY provides engineering, design, and advisory services. The company employs 18,000 staff across the industry, energy, and infrastructure sectors. In a related development, AFRY began the design of a waste-to-energy facility near Mělník in the Czech Republic in July 2024. The facility, to be constructed by CEZ Group, is set to convert municipal waste into heat for Prague, located roughly 30km to the south of the plant. TRAM service to continue
Dec. 13—ANDERSON — The Transportation for Rural Areas of Madison County has a new service provider. Jerry Bridges, executive director of the Madison County Council of Governments, said Thursday that Delaware County-based Lifestream will take over the service starting in January. "We didn't know if we would have TRAM service," he said. "We had discussions with providers from both Hamilton and Hancock counties." Bridges said the funds are available to continue the service. He said trips and cannot start or end in Anderson. Bridges said COG received approval to continue providing services from the Pendleton and Chesterfield areas, which were just included in the Anderson urbanized area. The service hours are being changed to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The cost to riders will remain at $4 per trip and $2.50 for senior citizens. The county owns six TRAM vehicles. Bridges said those vehicles have outlived their useful life, and the intention is to purchase two new vehicles in each of the next three years. The cost for the Lifestream service is being increased from $26 to $38 per trip. The COG board approved $270,287 from the county's share of food and beverage tax revenues for operating and capital expenses for the service. Earlier this year, Hillcroft Services announced it would no longer be able to provide the service. TRAM has an annual ridership of 15,000 trips. Lifestream will lease the vehicles for $1 per year and is responsible for insurance and maintenance of the vehicles. OTHER BUSINESS It was announced that the Indiana Department of Transportation has approved the future construction of sidewalks along Scatterfield Road from Cross Street to Mounds Road. Currently, design work is being started with the intention of building the sidewalks from Cross Street to University Boulevard in 2027 and from University Boulevard to Mounds Road in 2028. A determination has not been made if the sidewalks will be built on both sides of Scatterfield Road. "Sidewalks are a huge plus," Bridges said. "There will be more opportunities for public comment."
