Melbourne embraces father-son rule with son of club great Jeff White

News.com.au2 hours ago
Melbourne will gets its hands on the son of club great Jeff White in the 2025 draft after 18-year-old Kalani White nominated the Demons as his preferred club in an emotional phone call.
With the father-son rule in the spotlight amid calls from some clubs that it needs to be adjusted to cater more to the AFL's equalisation model, Melbourne committed to 198cm White.
His father, Jeff, played 236 games for the Demons in a brilliant career after being taken as the No.1 draft pick in 1994.
The decision to pick Kalani was confirmed this week, with the young tall part of the Gold Coast Suns academy, which gave him two clubs to choose from.
'Kalani is obviously someone we've been following for some time, and we're delighted that he has chosen us,' Melbourne's national recruiting manager Jason Taylor said.

'We understand there is still a process to go through via the AFL draft, where all 18 clubs have the ability to bid on potential father-sons and NGA prospects, but we're hopeful of welcoming Kalani later this year.
'His versatility is a standout; he has shown positive development at both ends of the ground as well as in the ruck. Combined with his athleticism, we're excited by his future growth.
'The way Kalani is progressing in his footy is really impressive, and that's credit to him and the amount of work he has put in.'
The Demons also have Taj Woewodin, son of Brownlow medallist Shane, on their list.
Fremantle chief executive Simon Garlick is among a growing chorus of club administrators who want the father-son rule looked at.
But after fielding four father-son picks in last week's win over West Coast, Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge said it needed protection.
'Family in footy, it's something special,' he said.
'I mean, look, it doesn't matter what I say because people say, well, you're going to say that because you've got these father-sons who've come through and have either been great contributors, premiership players.
'When you try and create that spiritual culture, to have sons of former players, it is something special and when they make their debuts, our supporters reminisce a little bit.
'I'm hoping they protect it.'

Adelaide Crows delay press conference as AFL considers Izak Rankine suspension

Adelaide and its forward Izak Rankine remain in discussions with the AFL over his pending ban for a homophobic slur, as Crows coach Matthew Nicks had a scheduled press conference delayed until Friday. The Crows remain uncertain when they will learn the fate of Rankine, set to be the sixth AFL-listed player suspended for a homophobic remark to an opponent in the past 16 months. Talks between Adelaide hierarchy and the AFL have stretched into a fourth day. "We are having ongoing discussions with the AFL as part of the due process," a Crows spokesman said on Wednesday. Rankine is facing a suspension of between three and five games after admitting making a homophobic slur to a Collingwood opponent in Adelaide's three-point win last Saturday night. The 25-year-old apologised to the unnamed Magpie player on Sunday as the AFL's integrity unit launched an investigation. Rankine risks being suspended for the entire finals campaign of ladder-leading Adelaide, who are returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2017. The Crows have one home-and-away game remaining and are then assured of hosting two finals. Adelaide is lobbying for a three-game ban for Rankine, which would offer the playmaker a finals lifeline. But there is widespread belief the AFL is pushing for a five-game suspension, which would end Rankine's season. Rankine will not train with his Crows teammates on Wednesday. A scheduled Wednesday media conference with Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks has been postponed until Friday. Last month, West Coast's Jack Graham was banned for four games for making a homophobic remark to a GWS player. In April last year, Port Adelaide's Jeremy Finlayson was banned for three games, and the next month, Gold Coast's Wil Powell was suspended for five matches, both for homophobic slurs. Two VFL players have also been banned for the same offence. Last month, Sydney defender Riak Andrew was suspended for five matches for an anti-gay slur while playing for the Swans' reserves team against North Melbourne. In July last year, St Kilda's Lance Collard was banned six games for homophobic comments while playing in the VFL for Sandringham against Williamstown. AAP

Fremantle's Luke Jackson training on his own in Melbourne ahead of season-defining clash with Western Bulldogs

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir says 'personal circumstances' can often override football requirements after revealing superstar big man Luke Jackson was training on his own in Melbourne ahead of a season-defining clash with the Western Bulldogs on Sunday. The Dockers are hanging on to seventh spot on the ladder after a shock loss to the Brisbane Lions at home last week and could miss the finals altogether should they lose to the Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium in their final regular season game. The Gold Coast Suns, who have two games remaining, would have to beat both Port Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval this Friday and then Essendon next Wednesday to make that a reality. Despite the crunch nature of the game, Longmuir backed a decision for Jackson to train in Melbourne, where his partner is located, as they deal with a personal issue. Jackson has been in Melbourne all week and will remain there until Sunday's game. 'I'm confident that we'll be able to work our way around it and I'm confident that he can still prepare really well,' Longmuir said on Wednesday 'He's been in contact with coaches, he's watched our reviews. 'Sometimes, personal circumstances override team preference, so we'll work our way through that. 'Come Sunday, it won't be an issue at all.' The Dockers' playing squad will arrive in Melbourne on Friday when Jackson will link up with them. Jackson has spent time in Melbourne this season with his partner and was forced to slap down talk of a possible return to the Demons, where he began his career and won a premiership in 2021. He has four years remaining on his seven-year deal with the Dockers that expires in 2029.
