GE Appliances shifts more production to US as part of a $3 billion investment

The Hill4 days ago
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — GE Appliances plans to shift production of refrigerators, gas ranges and water heaters out of China and Mexico as part of a more than $3 billion investment to expand its U.S. operations in Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina.
The investment — the second-largest in the Louisville-based company's history — is expected to add more than 1,000 jobs while ramping up domestic production and modernizing plants in the next five years.
'Our long-term strategy is about manufacturing close to our customers,' said CEO Kevin Nolan. 'With lean manufacturing, upskilling our workforce and automation, the math works for manufacturing in the United States.'
The majority of GE's appliance production is already in the U.S. and the shift means only that the company will transfer more work to its domestic plants.
GE will relocate production of gas ranges from Mexico to a plant in Georgia, while six refrigerator models now made in China will be manufactured at its Alabama plant, the company said.
In June, the company said it would move production of clothes washers from China to its sprawling manufacturing complex in Louisville. The reshoring announcements come as President Donald Trump tries to lure factories back to the United States by imposing import taxes — tariffs — on foreign goods.
GE Appliances said Wednesday that the first phase of its new investment will begin at plants in five Southern states — Kentucky, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina.
'We are defining the future of manufacturing at GE Appliances by investing in our plants, people and communities,' Nolan said. 'No other appliance company over the last decade has invested more in U.S. manufacturing than we have, and our $3 billion, five-year plan shows that our commitment to U.S. manufacturing will continue into the future.'
The multiyear plan includes ramping up production of gas ranges that have been made in Mexico but will shift to the company's plant in LaFayette, Georgia, the company said. Production of six refrigerators now made in China will move to its plant in Decatur, Alabama.
GE's plant in Camden, South Carolina, will add production of electric and hybrid heat pump water heaters, doubling the factory's output and employment once the project is complete, the company said. The plant now produces gas water heaters. Production of the company's electric and hybrid water heaters — now made in China — will shift to South Carolina.
In Selmer, Tennessee, its plant will produce two new models of air conditioners.
The latest investment includes the June announcement that GE Appliances will pump $490 million into its Kentucky complex to produce a combo washer/dryer and a lineup of front load washers that are now made in China. In all, production of more than 15 models of front load washers will shift to the company's Louisville complex — known as Appliance Park, it said.
Once its new plan is fully implemented, GE Appliances will have invested $6.5 billion across its 11 U.S. manufacturing plants and nationwide distribution network since 2016, it said.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said Wednesday that the investment shows his state's ability to support world-class companies with a skilled workforce and the resources needed to thrive.
'GE Appliances has established Kentucky as America's destination for advanced manufacturing and job creation, and today's news shows this iconic company's unwavering belief in the commonwealth and the role we play in their success,' Beshear said.
GE Appliances handles product design and engineering work at its Louisville headquarters but doesn't make all of its products in the U.S. It contracts with other manufacturers, including in China, for some of its production where it doesn't have capacity or needs access to a global supply chain. The company said its core business strategy is to base production in the United States, and investments announced in June and on Wednesday are another step toward achieving that goal.
The company said it's partnering with universities, technical schools and high schools to help ensure that its plants and other facilities have a trained workforce.
'Infrastructure and tools matter, but they are not enough,' said Bill Good, vice president of supply chain for GE Appliances. 'America's manufacturing renaissance will be built by people.'
GE Appliances is a subsidiary of the China-based Haier company.
Overall, GE Appliances says it contributes more than $30 billion annually to the U.S. economy and supports more than 113,000 jobs – both directly and indirectly – through its operations, suppliers and distribution network.

Trump says he'll know if Putin wants peace deal with Ukraine in their meeting

US President Donald Trump said Monday that he expected to determine, moments into his meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska this Friday, whether it would be possible to work out a deal to end the war in Ukraine. Speaking at a White House press briefing, Trump said, 'At the end of that meeting, probably the first two minutes, I'll know exactly whether or not a deal can be made'. He said he thought Friday's sitdown with Putin in Alaska would be 'really a feel-out meeting,' adding that 'it'll be good, but it might be bad'. It could be 'Lots of luck, keep fighting. Or I may say, we can make a deal.' Trump said. Without elaborating, Trump reiterated that land exchanges might be a part of any significant agreement. Friday's meeting at the request of Putin comes as Trump presses for a ceasefire that has remained out of reach in the Russian invasion of Ukraine and as European allies pushed for Ukraine's involvement, fearful that discussions could otherwise favour Moscow. Trump returns to criticising Zelenskyy On Monday, Trump seemed to duck repeated chances to say that he would push for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to take part in his discussions with Putin. Trump, who has harshly criticised both leaders after promising — and so far failing — to swiftly end the conflict, gave much of his criticism to Zelenskyy again. According to Trump, Zelenskyy had been to 'a lot of meetings' without managing to halt a war that Russia started. Trump said that Zelenskyy had been in power for the duration of the war and 'nothing happened' during that time, contrasting him with Putin, who has wielded power in Russia for decades. He then said, after he meets with Putin, 'The next meeting will be with Zelenskyy and Putin', but it could also be a meeting with 'Putin and Zelenskyy and me.' The US leader's eagerness to reach a deal has raised fears in Ukraine and Europe about such an agreement favouring Russia at the detriment of Ukraine. EU leaders wary of Trump-Putin meeting Earlier on Monday, EU foreign ministers called for "transatlantic unity" to back Ukraine and put further pressure on Russia. And in a joint statement issued over the weekend, the leaders of Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, the UK, and the European Commission rejected Putin's ceasefire proposal to trade the Ukrainian territories of Donetsk and Luhansk. They stated that "the current line of contact should be the starting point of negotiations" and stressed that they "are united as Europeans and determined to jointly promote our interests". EU leaders also reiterated that "the path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine." To that point, Trump on Monday said he would call Zelenskyy and European leaders after his discussion with Putin to 'tell them what kind of a deal — I'm not going to make a deal. It's not up to me to make a deal.' Trump's up-and-down relations with Putin More recently, Trump has expressed frustration with Putin that Russia hasn't appeared to take a push for a ceasefire more seriously, and softened his tone toward Zelenskyy. But his comments on Monday suggested he might have had another change of heart. 'President Putin invited me to get involved,' Trump said. He noted that he thought it was 'very respectful' that Putin is coming to the US for Friday's meeting, instead of insisting that Trump go to Russia. 'I'd like to see a ceasefire. I'd like to see the best deal that can be made for both parties,' Trump said. Related Zelenskyy tries to warn Trump not to trust Putin ahead of Alaska meeting EU calls for 'transatlantic unity' ahead of Trump-Putin summit in Alaska Meanwhile, Trump on Monday hinted that if Friday's summit goes well, he might see a time when trade between the United States and Russia returns to normal, a sharp contrast to his warnings of more economic sanctions. However, it remains unclear if Russia will follow through by withdrawing its forces from Ukraine as analysts expect Putin to be unwavering in his demands to keep all the territory his forces now occupy and to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO. Zelenskyy, for his part, has maintained he will never consent to any formal Russian annexation of Ukrainian territory or give up a bid for NATO membership.

Trump's $1 Trillion Defense Budget Meets $1 AI Access: Sam Altman And ChatGPT Land U.S. Government Partnership

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has secured a new partnership with the U.S. General Services Administration that will give federal agencies access to the company's leading frontier models through ChatGPT Enterprise for $1 per agency for the next year, according to an OpenAI announcement. The initiative, described as a core pillar of President Donald Trump's AI Action Plan, will provide federal employees with secure access to ChatGPT Enterprise and new training resources, OpenAI says, as well as additional advanced features during a 60-day introductory period. Historic Federal AI Partnership Focused on Productivity and Training Under the agreement, participating executive branch agencies can use OpenAI's most capable models through ChatGPT Enterprise for $1 yearly. According to OpenAI, the program is designed to help government workers allocate more time to public service priorities and less time to administrative tasks. OpenAI will also work with partners Slalom and Boston Consulting Group to support secure deployment and provide agency-specific training. Security safeguards are a key component of the rollout. OpenAI says that ChatGPT Enterprise does not use business data, including inputs or outputs, to train its models, and these same protections will apply to federal use. The umbrella program consolidates OpenAI's existing federal, state, and local partnerships, including collaborations with the U.S. National Labs, Air Force Research Laboratory, NASA, National Institutes of Health, and the Treasury. Through OpenAI for Government, the company will offer secure and compliant access to its most capable models, limited custom models for national security applications, and hands-on support for integration into agency workflows. The first pilot under this program will be with the Department of Defense's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office under a contract with a $200 million ceiling, OpenAI says. The work will explore how frontier AI can improve administrative operations, healthcare access for service members, program data analysis, and proactive cyber defense, all within the company's usage Results Show Significant Time Savings for Public Servants OpenAI cited results from state-level pilot programs to demonstrate the technology's impact on productivity. Pennsylvania state employees saved an average of 95 minutes per day on routine tasks when using ChatGPT. In North Carolina, 85% of participants in a Department of State Treasurer pilot reported a positive experience with ChatGPT. At the federal level, OpenAI models are already in use at Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore, and Sandia national laboratories to accelerate scientific research, strengthen national security readiness, and drive public sector innovation. AI Integration Expands Across Federal Agencies The Trump administration's interest in AI predates the OpenAI-GSA deal announcement. Earlier this year, Altman joined Trump at the White House to announce Stargate, a massive data center initiative designed to strengthen U.S. AI infrastructure. In May, Altman and other AI executives accompanied the president to the Middle East to promote deals aligned with U.S. foreign policy goals. While agencies hold vast datasets that could enhance AI systems, OpenAI has confirmed that interactions with federal employees will not be used for model training, addressing potential privacy concerns.
