Willie le Roux a step closer to Springbok Test centurion club
The 35-year-old veteran fullback has made 98 appearances in the green and gold jersey to date.
Le Roux, is bidding to become just the eighth player to reach the magical three-figure mark for South Africa and the fourth backline player to do so.
It's worth remembering that 945 players have pulled the famed green and gold jersey over their heads since 1891.
Le Roux was on Tuesday named among the substitutes in Rassie Erasmus's team to face Italy at Loftus Versfeld.
Should he called upon – as is likely to be the case – he will pick up his 99th cap.
That would leave him set to make his 100th appearance the following weekend in the second Test against Italy at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha. Le Roux, who was born in Stellenbosch and attended famed Paul Roos Gymnasium, turned 35 on 18 August 2024.
He made his Test debut on 8 June 2013 against Italy at Hollywoodbets Kings Park in Durban and has scored 15 tries to date.
Le Roux has won 67 of his Tests, lost 30 with one other ending in a draw for a win percentage of 68%.
He made his provincial debut for Boland Cavaliers and has also represented Griquas, Free State Cheetahs, Sharks and Blue Bulls in South Africa, as well as Wasps (England) and Canon Eagles and Toyota Verblitz (both Japan).
Le Roux is a two-time Rugby World Cup winner having been part of both the 2019 and 2023 Webb Ellis Cup-winning Springbok squads. A move to Chiefs will give the 31-year-old Shalulile a chance to continue his career at the highest level. His record in front of goal, and his impressive haul of trophies are a testament to his ability as a footballer. At Chiefs, he can be the missing piece in the puzzle that gets the club firing on all cylinders again. If Chiefs are serious about getting the club back to where they belong, then a player of Shalulile's calibre is one they should be signing. Lloyd Harris 'trending in the right direction' for deep run at Wimbledon
Despite a challenging year out due to recovering from major back surgery, South Africa's Lloyd Harris is feeling buoyant, excited and ready for a deep run at Wimbledon 2025. On the Sunday before The Championships, a relaxed Harris spoke with Amisha Savani at The All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon. This year, Harris did not need to qualify to enter the main draw due a couple of player withdrawals and thanks to his protected ranking. Protected ranking is a system that helps players who have been injured for at least six months to re-enter the tour at a higher level than their current ranking allows. The protection is based on Harris's average ranking during the first three months of his injury. This enabled Harris to enter the main draw despite his current world No 320 ranking. The South African star spoke of missing out on eight months of tennis due to recovering from back surgery, saying that 'it was not the easiest thing to come back from'. However, he felt positive, 'feeling very healthy and good now so you know it's trending in the right direction so I'm excited to compete again and on the main stage'. Harris spoke of his grass season preparation, having played in some warm-up Challenger events across the UK. On his Wimbledon hopes, he was 'feeling healthy and good and trending in the right direction, and excited to compete again on the main stage'. He spoke about it being busy week of preparing his body: 'It was a great preparation week and the team is happy and everything'. The Championships, Wimbledon began on Monday, 30 June.
