A spritz of the familiar will welcome tourists for Visit Malaysia 2026
MALAYSIA'S first national mocktail − the Bandung Pandan Spritz − will be showcased at participating hotels nationwide early next year as part of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM 2026).
The drink was created by R Bar bartender Muhammad Nadzemi Norihan from Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel and Convention Centre, for a contest that ran earlier this year.
Inspired by the popular sirap bandung, Muhammad Nadzemi gave the drink a contemporary twist to wow judges at the Signature VM 2026 Mocktail Championship.
'Sirap bandung is enjoyed by Malaysians during festive seasons or when eating out.
'Here, I use coconut lychee cordial, clarified sirap bandung and lemon concentrate,' he said during the launch of the mocktail at Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel and Convention Centre.
The national competition was organised by Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH), Malaysian Food and Beverage Executives Association (MFBEA) and Mixology Alliance of MFBEA, with Yeo Hiap Seng (Yeo's) as the main sponsor.
Martin Ehlers, general manager of Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel and Convention Centre and Four Points by Sheraton Kuala Lumpur, City Centre, said the win was a proud milestone.
'This recognition is truly an honour for us as it is an extraordinary mark for the hotel as well as for Muhammad Nadzemi.
'It is not just about what is in the glass – it is about who we are and the representation it brings for the nation and the Renaissance brand,' he said.
Also present at the launch were MFBEA president Muhammad Hisham Tan Abdullah, Marriott International market vice-president (Malaysia) George Varughese, Yeo's marketing director Renda Low, Tourism Malaysia VM 2026 secretariat head Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim and MAH president Datin Christina Toh.

Denying foreigners minimum wage will only hurt local workforce, says Sim
KUALA LUMPUR: Not paying the RM1,700 minimum wage to foreign workers will ultimately see the local labour force losing out, says Human Resources Minister Steven Sim. He said that if foreign workers' wages remained low, the labour market would lean towards that direction. 'Employers will prioritise foreign workers and wages for locals will also be dragged down,' he said when winding up debates on the 13th Malaysia Plan in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Aug 21). 'If we let the labour system pressure certain groups, the same system will jeopardise all Malaysians,' he said. According to Sim, at least 4.37 million workers – 80% of them Malaysians – were paid less than RM1,700 a month before the increase in minimum wage. '(Increasing wages) actually benefits Malaysians the most,' he added. He said statistics also show that Malaysian workers whose wages were in the lower tiers enjoyed a 60% increase overall since the minimum wage mechanism was introduced in January 2013. According to Sim, the Employment Act 1955 also clearly states that minimum wage should be paid to all workers regardless of their citizenship. 'It is not just legislation but a symbol of our humanity. 'It's about doing the right thing,' he said.

Malaysians set for seamless overseas payments with DuitNow QR
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians will soon be able to scan and pay overseas with DuitNow QR, as Payments Network Malaysia Sdn Bhd (PayNet) and Ant International expand their tie-up to connect local wallets to Alipay+'s 100 million-merchant ecosystem worldwide. PayNet said this builds on the initial memorandum of understanding signed in August 2023, which enabled Alipay+ users from 15 international partners to pay at more than 2.6 million DuitNow QR merchants in Malaysia. "This next phase of the partnership demonstrates the strength of Malaysia's national payment infrastructure and its ability to scale globally," PayNet group chief executive officer Farhan Ahmad said in a statement. "Not only will this drive global acceptance of DuitNow, it is also the beginning of a deep collaboration around reducing fraud, developing future-ready talent and building a more inclusive digital payments ecosystem." Ant International president Douglas Feagin said Malaysia is becoming a key fintech hub in Southeast Asia. "We are committed to deepening our investments and partnerships here to help strengthen its position, and to drive inclusive growth in the region and beyond with world-class innovation and entrepreneurship," he said. The partnership also aims to boost Malaysia's appeal to tourists, channel more spending to local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and support the country's target of 45 million visitors by 2026. To fight cross-border scams, both firms will strengthen security through artificial intelligence-powered technology, joint fraud audits and threat intelligence sharing. Talent development will be another focus, including Malaysia's largest intervarsity hackathon, PayHack and global initiatives such as 10x1000 Tech for Inclusion. The collaboration will also promote SME inclusion and sustainability in digital payments.
