Sustainable Travel: A Luxury Eco-Weekend In Copenhagen

Forbes11 hours ago
Copenhagen is a city at the forefront of sustainability in Europe, but this doesn't mean you have to forgo your indulgences. The city offers the perfect backdrop for a guilt-free yet indulgent luxury weekend with some of the top restaurants in the world as well as stunning luxury hotels with a conscience.
If you want to avoid flying, the most eco-conscious way to reach Copenhagen is by train. Obviously, this requires more time, but the journey itself becomes part of the break and you could add in a stopover in another city. Options from the UK typically involve a Eurostar service to Brussels or Paris, followed by onward connections through Germany to Copenhagen. You can travel in comfort with Eurostar Premier class, which includes access to lounges, priority boarding, spacious seating, a menu curated by top chefs, and complimentary amenities like Wi-Fi and at-seat power sockets.
In the future, traveling around Europe by train should become a lot easier and less time-consuming with the launch of Nox in 2027. This new sleeper train service aims to connect over 100 cities with affordable overnight train routes, including Copenhagen. This Berlin-based startup will offer private one or two-bed cabins, aiming to compete with short-haul flights.
Copenhagen boasts plenty of luxury hotels committed to sustainability to choose from. While in the past, you may have associated eco-friendly with compromising on comfort or style, this is certainly not the case here.

Guldsmeden Manon Les Suites: Stepping into Manon Les Suites is like finding a Bali-inspired oasis in the heart of Copenhagen. You may well have already seen the stunning indoor jungle pool while scrolling social media. While you may not equate Copenhagen with a relaxing swim and lounging by the pool, this hotel offers the option to feel like you are in a tropical location when you need some rest between sightseeing. You won't have to compromise on comfort either with the hotel's well equipped suites which come with an array of amentities from robes to deliciously scented body oil and eco friendly tooth kits.

As part of the Guldsmeden hotel family, it holds a "Gold Ø-label" for its organic food, uses sustainable energy, and prioritizes practices like repairing rather than replacing items. The lush plant installations are central to the hotel's atmosphere with the hotel having its own in-house 'plant nursery' where they try to revive and rehabilitate struggling plants instead of replacing them. Food waste monitoring is used to measure food waste at all stages – breakfast, lunch, dinner, and production. The kitchen is equipped with bins placed on integrated scales, and the staff is trained to separate waste accurately.

The Alchemist: Named as one of the top restaurants in the world, The Alchemist offers a truly unique and unforgettable dining experience. The Alchemist offers a "holistic cuisine" experience that unfolds across several distinct spaces within the restaurant. Holistic cuisine uses elements from gastronomy, theatre and art, as well as science, technology and design, to create a multi-sensory experience.
Dishes such as Plastic Fantastic are designed to shock and encourage debate on environmental issues. The course was inspired by the large garbage patches found in centre of oceans where a natural vortex collects the garbage. A play on classic fish and chips even with the vinegar, the dish consists of an edible plastic 'vortex' made from algae and collagen from fish skin. Underneath are tempura-battered cod cheeks, with a tartar sauce based on pickles from this summer.

Under chef Rasmus Munk, you can expect up to 50 small dishes over 4-6 hours, some of which are designed to be challenging to the diner. While not exclusively plant-based, the restaurants's commitment to sustainability is profound, focusing on ethical sourcing, minimizing waste, and exploring the impact of food systems. The restaurant aims to raise awareness about climate change, as well as environmental and animal welfare issues. Unusually, they also take pride in highlighting invasive species such as moon jellyfish, king crab and sea urchins by featuring them on the menu.
If you plan to go, make sure you book when they release tickets three months in advance. With a waiting list of over a million people, advance reservations are essential!
Restaurant Ark: Holding a prestigious Michelin Green Star, Ark is a pioneer in vegan fine dining. Their multi-course tasting menus are a testament to the possibilities of plant-based cuisine, focusing on local and foraged ingredients. Expedia Shows Strength in B2B, Advertising and International, Ups 2025 Guidance

Expedia appears to be executing well on key priorities, and its B2B, international and advertising businesses are particular standouts. Expedia Group increased its guidance for 2025, based on strong second quarter performance in its B2B business, advertising, and international growth. The company's new guidance for 2025 is 3%-5% growth in gross bookings and revenue, up from 2%-4%. Expedia is looking for EBITDA margin expansion for the full year of 100 basis points, an increase from the previous 75 to 100 basis points. Its share price popped more than 15% in after-hours trading. Other travel companies that have reported results in recent weeks have noted weak demand in the U.S. and had to trim forecasts, including Marriott this week. Expedia also noted softness in the U.S. but was able to offset that weakness. "We delivered a solid second qu

Expedia's (NASDAQ:EXPE) Q2 Sales Beat Estimates, Stock Jumps 13.7%

Online travel agency Expedia (NASDAQ:EXPE) announced better-than-expected revenue in Q2 CY2025, with sales up 6.4% year on year to $3.79 billion. Its non-GAAP profit of $4.24 per share was 2.7% above analysts' consensus estimates. Is now the time to buy Expedia? Find out in our full research report. Expedia (EXPE) Q2 CY2025 Highlights: Revenue: $3.79 billion vs analyst estimates of $3.71 billion (6.4% year-on-year growth, 2.1% beat) Adjusted EPS: $4.24 vs analyst estimates of $4.13 (2.7% beat) Adjusted EBITDA: $908 million vs analyst estimates of $852.5 million (24% margin, 6.5% beat) Operating Margin: 12.8%, in line with the same quarter last year Free Cash Flow Margin: 24.3%, down from 92.2% in the previous quarter Room Nights Booked: 105.5 million, up 6.6 million year on year Market Capitalization: $23.54 billion "We delivered a solid second quarter, surpassing our top and bottom line expectations while navigating a dynamic environment,' said Ariane Gorin, CEO of Expedia Group, 'Our performance was driven by continued strength across B2B and Advertising and further progress on our key priorities. Company Overview Originally founded as a part of Microsoft, Expedia (NASDAQ:EXPE) is one of the world's leading online travel agencies. Revenue Growth A company's long-term sales performance can indicate its overall quality. Any business can put up a good quarter or two, but the best consistently grow over the long haul. Regrettably, Expedia's sales grew at a mediocre 9.5% compounded annual growth rate over the last three years. This fell short of our benchmark for the consumer internet sector and is a rough starting point for our analysis. This quarter, Expedia reported year-on-year revenue growth of 6.4%, and its $3.79 billion of revenue exceeded Wall Street's estimates by 2.1%. Looking ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to grow 3.9% over the next 12 months, a deceleration versus the last three years. This projection is underwhelming and implies its products and services will see some demand headwinds. Today's young investors likely haven't read the timeless lessons in Gorilla Game: Picking Winners In High Technology because it was written more than 20 years ago when Microsoft and Apple were first establishing their supremacy. But if we apply the same principles, then enterprise software stocks leveraging their own generative AI capabilities may well be the Gorillas of the future. So, in that spirit, we are excited to present our Special Free Report on a profitable, fast-growing enterprise software stock that is already riding the automation wave and looking to catch the generative AI next. Room Nights Booked Booking Growth As an online travel company, Expedia generates revenue growth by increasing both the number of stays (or experiences) booked and the commission charged on those bookings. Over the last two years, Expedia's room nights booked, a key performance metric for the company, increased by 8.7% annually to 105.5 million in the latest quarter. This growth rate is decent for a consumer internet business and indicates people enjoy using its offerings. In Q2, Expedia added 6.6 million room nights booked, leading to 6.7% year-on-year growth. The quarterly print was lower than its two-year result, suggesting its new initiatives aren't accelerating booking growth just yet. Revenue Per Booking Average revenue per booking (ARPB) is a critical metric to track because it not only measures how much users book on its platform but also the commission that Expedia can charge. Expedia's ARPB fell over the last two years, averaging 1.5% annual declines. This isn't great, but the increase in room nights booked is more relevant for assessing long-term business potential. We'll monitor the situation closely; if Expedia tries boosting ARPB by taking a more aggressive approach to monetization, it's unclear whether bookings can continue growing at the current pace. This quarter, Expedia's ARPB clocked in at $35.89. It was flat year on year, worse than the change in its room nights booked. Key Takeaways from Expedia's Q2 Results We enjoyed seeing Expedia beat analysts' EBITDA expectations this quarter. We were also happy its number of room nights booked outperformed Wall Street's estimates. Overall, we think this was a decent quarter with some key metrics above expectations. The stock traded up 13.7% to $214 immediately following the results. Expedia put up rock-solid earnings, but one quarter doesn't necessarily make the stock a buy. Let's see if this is a good investment. If you're making that decision, you should consider the bigger picture of valuation, business qualities, as well as the latest earnings. We cover that in our actionable full research report which you can read here, it's free.
