The Boston Red Sox have had an up-and-down season as they sit at 43-45 as the All-Star break approaches. The Red Sox are currently fourth in the American League East, and three games back in the wild card race.

Boston finds itself in a group that could wind up as sellers or buyers at the deadline because of their place in the standings at this point. However, team president Sam Kennedy spoke on the Greg Hill Show earlier today and revealed that his front office has given the team the green light to be buyers at the MLB trade deadline.
The Red Sox already made a blockbuster trade earlier this month when they sent superstar Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in return for pitchers Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks, and two prospects.
Now, the Red Sox could be in the market to stock up before the deadline to make a run at the postseason. When asked by WEEI's Jermaine Wiggins if he believes the team can make a run if they acquire the right talent, Kennedy gave a firm response.

'Absolutely,' said Kennedy (WEEI 97.3 FM). 'We have the ability to do that in terms of, you know, a blessing from ownership, and fulfilling our goal of becoming a postseason team. That said, we have to start playing better baseball on a more consistent basis."
Although the Red Sox have the front office's support, Kennedy didn't mince words about the team's recent inconsistencies.
Over the last 20 games, the Red Sox have won six straight and lost six straight, and gone 5-3 over the other eight games.
'I mean, when we're playing sloppy defensively, when we're not running the bases as well, when the bullpen's struggling, it's really hard to keep up in the American League East," Kennedy said. "So we've got to play better baseball and prove to ourselves over these next seven series that this is a team that can do what we think we can do."

The AL East is a stacked division with three teams within a half game of each other sitting 10 games over .500. The Red Sox have three series before the All-Star break, including two against the two worst teams in the National League and a four-game series to end the first half against the Tampa Bay Rays, who sit above them in their division.

The Red Sox need a strong finish before the All-Star break to put themselves in a position to buy at the deadline and make a run in the second half.
'I mean, we were very aggressive this offseason. We had what we thought was a really great offseason in terms of the additions and the extensions - with Garrett Crochet and Alex Bregman and Aroldis Chapman. We just - for a lot of reasons, we've been a .500 or below .500 team. That's not what we're looking for here. So to answer your question - yes, we do have the ability to go out and improve the team," Kennedy said. "But we also have to play better baseball, to put ourselves in a position where the postseason is realistic, and we gotta get going.'

Boston has the green light to acquire the talent they need to make a second-half run, but the production and consistency on the field has to improve. The Red Sox play next on July 4, when they open a three-game set with the Washington Nationals.

NBA Cup schedule announced with games starting Oct. 31, some on NBC and Peacock

Both times the NBA Cup has been lifted, it has been by one of the legends of the game — LeBron James in 2023 and Giannis Antetokounmpo last year. The NBA Cup can also tell us something about teams we may want to keep an eye on in May and June. Last December, the Oklahoma City Thunder were playing in the NBA Cup Finals (but had an off night and fell to Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks; they were ready for the big stage by the time June rolled around). Two years ago, the Indiana Pacers, an up-and-coming team, reached the NBA Cup Finals, where they lost to the Lakers. However, they used the momentum from that run to reach the Eastern Conference Finals that year, then the NBA Finals this past season. The NBA Cup schedule has been released, with games starting on Oct. 31 and running through December, with some of them on NBC and streaming on Peacock. The NBA Cup opens with a Halloween night double header streamed on Prime: the Celtics at 76ers (7 p.m. ET), followed by the Lakers at Grizzlies (9:30 p.m. ET). All 30 NBA teams will play at least four NBA Cup games within their group of five teams, then the winners of each group, as well as one wild card from each conference, will advance to a knockout round. The NBA Cup semi-finals will take place Dec. 13, with the Cup Finals on Dec. 16 in Las Vegas. Games on NBC, Peacock Two critical games in the final week of group play will be broadcast on NBC and streamed on Peacock on Tuesday, Nov. 25. Those games are: • Magic at 76ers (8 p.m. ET)• Clippers at Lakers (11 p.m. ET) Philly hosting Orlando features two East teams with high expectations entering this season after both were rocked by injuries a season ago. If everyone can stay healthy, this showdown between Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner against Paul George and Joel Embiid will be must watch. Lakers fans like to say there is no rivalry with the Clippers, no battle for Los Angeles — until you tell them the Clippers have been the better team and the better run franchise for the past decade. These games between two teams that project to be top-six in the West are always entertaining, with LeBron and James Harden putting on a show. Stock market today: Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq futures trade flat with PPI looming amid rate-cut fervor

US stock futures hovered around the flatline as Wall Street awaited another pulse check on inflation after Tuesday's tepid figures sent rate-cut bets and markets soaring. Futures attached to the Dow Jones Industrial Average (YM=F), the benchmark S&P 500 (ES=F), and the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 (NQ=F) mostly traded flat. Stocks extended their rally Wednesday, pushing the S&P 500 and Nasdaq to consecutive record highs. Bitcoin got a boost from mounting rate-cut bets too, reaching a new record high on Wednesday evening. Euphoria over a possible September rate cut swept Wall Street on Tuesday after July's Consumer Price Index report showed inflation rose as expected, but not dramatically. Traders have now fully priced in a rate cut at the Fed's next meeting even as some Fed policymakers continue to urge patience. On Thursday, investors will be eager to see if July's Producer Price Index (PPI) report falls in line with the CPI data that has boosted sentiment this week. Caleb Williams will get his first preseason playing time in Johnson's offense when Bears host Bills

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Chicago Bears coach Ben Johnson sees the second preseason game as the ideal time to get quarterback Caleb Williams some on-field reps. Williams will see game action in Johnson's offense for the first time when the Bears host the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night. Backups Tyson Bagent, Case Keenum and Austin Reed took the snaps in last Sunday's 24-24 tie against Miami in the preseason opener. 'Our starters are going to play, everyone is going to play,' Johnson said Wednesday. 'Last week and really all through camp I've been pretty consistent with the thought of reps, reps, reps are the most important thing to get (Williams) up to speed.' Johnson said he got Williams 80 to 100 practice plays within the offense that he wouldn't have had if he had played in Sunday's game. Of course, Williams wasn't facing a live defense trying to sack him. 'This week it's a different schedule, a different length of time in terms of between games, and all that,' Johnson said. 'So our plan right now is the guys that sat out last week they will be playing this week.' Williams' play in training camp practices has been inconsistent but Johnson has seen improvement from the second-year QB. 'I'm pleased with how he is able to spit these plays out right now,' Johnson said. 'He's made significant progress in that regard and once we get going here in a game week, we're going to condense the verbiage even more. But we have challenged him. It's been a lot. 'That was by design, and so if we struggle at all in the huddle to get the play out, then the delays are going to pop up. That's a little bit part of the learning process and us growing, but by design we have made this very challenging and hard and we know what we need to do as a staff to elevate some of that pressure. I think Week 1 we're going to be in a good spot.' What's less clear is who will start at left tackle. Starter Braxton Jones is being challenged by rookie Ozzy Trapilo. However, at Wednesday's practice, second-year undrafted free agent Theo Benedet alternated with Jones at left tackle with the starters, while Trapilo was the backup right tackle. Jaylon Johnson 'on track' for return Cornerback Jaylon Johnson remains on the non-football injury list, but Ben Johnson sounded more optimistic Wednesday that the two-time Pro Bowl cornerback will be ready for the season opener. 'He's right on track, he's right where he need to be,' Johnson said. 'It's really like I said, those type of injuries you really don't know. Short term, long term, every guy is a little bit different, but I think we're going in the right direction.' ___ AP NFL:
