2026 Jeep Cherokee returns: Hybrid debuts with turbocharged engine
Jeep has released the first images of the new SUV, along with some intriguing factoids on its website ahead of its full reveal and arrival "later this year." Fans of classic Cherokees might look fondly on the new model, which returns to a boxier, more Jeep-like visage than its smoother-snooted predecessor. To drive the point home, Jeep even published an image with the XJ-series versions of the compact Cherokee sold from the 1980s through the early 2000s bracketing the new model (below). The '26 Cherokee's front end is flatter and has squared-off headlights evocative of those sealed-beam units on the original XJs, and the roofline is more upright and angular than before.
The Cherokee goes hybrid
Jeep's announcement of the new Cherokee includes some tantalizing hints of what might sit beneath the SUV's flatter, longer hood. Per the automaker: "Reimagined from the ground up, the next-generation Jeep Cherokee will redefine North America's most popular vehicle segment, bringing midsize SUV customers a new, efficient, and powerful hybrid propulsion option from Jeep."

So, there will be a hybrid. It's not clear from that whether the Cherokee will only be offered as a hybrid, though, because later in the same press release Jeep makes this somewhat confusing reference: "From industry-leading ICE vehicles to plug-in hybrid leadership to all-electric offerings, the new Jeep Cherokee joins the mission to empower customers with the freedom to adventure their way with unmatched Jeep capability and innovation."
Is that line referring to Jeep overall? The Jeep brand of course offers both internal-combustion-engine options as well as plug-in hybrids (the brand's 4xe technology is offered on the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler and Gladiator pickup). Or is this a tease that the 2026 Cherokee will, as we expect, offer an entry-level gas engine — say, the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that powers the Compass — along with a 4xe plug-in hybrid variant or even an EV option? Perhaps, but Jeep isn't releasing any further information until closer to the Cherokee's launch, though it added some specifics to its consumer-facing website in mid-August.
Apparently the Cherokee's hybrid powertrain will consist of a turbocharged, hybridized 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. Every Cherokee will get Jeep's Active Drive I all-wheel-drive system standard, too. This combination promises 38 mpg combined, per Jeep, a huge improvement over the last-generation Cherokee's 2.4-liter four-cylinder, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and 3.2-liter V-6 engine options, which struggled to achieve mid-20-mpg combined figures. Despite the tiny new engine size, the 2026 Jeep Cherokee is said to be capable of towing up to 3,500 pounds — a class-average amount, but welcome nonetheless.

It'll be larger, too
Jeep has a history of referring to the Cherokee as a midsize SUV, but based on generally accepted marketing classifications, it's really a compact — again, same as the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and others, none of which are particularly "compact" these days. (The larger Grand Cherokee fits in the midsize category, while the larger-still Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are full-size three-row beasts.) That said, the new Cherokee is likely going to inflate, adopting a larger footprint closer to the Grand Cherokee's than the smaller Compass's.
A big reason for this is the platform: This new Cherokee is expected to utilize parent company Stellantis' new STLA Large architecture, which is capable of supporting ICE, hybrid and all-electric powertrains. This same STLA iteration appears in the Jeep Wagoneer S EV. This new platform should stretch the Cherokee's wheelbase decently beyond the old Cherokee's, opening up cabin space and pushing the wheels farther toward the corners, as you can see in these photos. Speaking of the cabin, it's likely the new Cherokee will adopt the latest version of Uconnect infotainment — possibly even offering a third dashboard display in front of the front seat passenger on high-end models — just as the Wagoneer S does.
We'll find out more as the 2026 Jeep Cherokee approaches its official debut later this year, including where the new SUV will be built (the last one was assembled in Illinois) — a key consideration in these tariff-tossed times. The good news? Jeep is promising an affordable price squarely between the recently more affordable Compass and the Grand Cherokee, or around $30,000 by our estimation. The Cherokee will be available in five trim levels: Base, Laredo, Limited, Overland, and off-road Trailhawk.

Summer's Hottest Wheels: EconomyBookings.com Reveals What Americans Are Driving this Sun Soaked Season
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--If it feels like everyone you know is either at the airport or behind the wheel this summer — you're not imagining it. Road trips are having another big moment in 2025, and travelers are getting savvy with their car rental choices, according to new booking trends from one of the fastest-growing car rental platforms in the world. Summer trends in American rental cars Share The summer snapshot shows that Americans are leaning into comfort, flexibility, and a touch of practicality when hitting the road. The Toyota Corolla leads as the most rented car model this year, followed closely by the Toyota RAV4 and Volkswagen Jetta — a slight shift from last summer, when the RAV4 held the top spot. SUVs, full-size, and midsize vehicles remain the go-to classes for travelers across the board. 'Americans want cars that can keep up with their summer,' says Alen Baibekov, CEO of which is part of The Booking Group Corporation. 'That means roomy enough for bags and friends, reliable for long drives, and fuel-efficient enough that they don't regret choosing the open road.' The data backs him up: The most popular rental locations this summer are Denver International Airport, LAX, and Orlando International Airport — all hubs for adventure-bound tourists. That's a slight change from 2024, when Orlando took the top spot ahead of Denver and L.A., suggesting a growing interest in national parks, road trip loops, and cooler mountain destinations. So what else are travelers adding on? The top extra options for the past two summers have stayed the same: Full Coverage, Roadside Assistance, and Last-Minute Cancellation, all offered directly through Another crowd favorite is Additional Driver, which allows travel partners to split time behind the wheel (and the playlists). And if you think everyone is gone for the weekend, you'd be wrong. The average rental length is a full 7 days, with registered users tacking on an extra day on average. That means travelers are using their vacation time (finally), and not just for quick escapes. With bookings showing no signs of slowing, expects the road trip trend to keep rolling well into fall. 'Summer travel is no longer just about flights and hotels,' says Baibekov. 'It's about freedom, discovery, and the thrill of the road. We're seeing people plan smarter, drive further, and make the journey part of the adventure.' So whether you're headed to the Rockies, the Pacific Coast Highway, or a Disney resort, expect to see plenty of RAV4s, Corollas, and Jettas on the highway — each packed with coolers, playlists, and memories in the making.

Over 78,000 Jeep Wrangler vehicles recalled. Here's why.
Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, has recalled more than 78,000 2024-2025 Wrangler vehicles, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) notice. The remote start antenna cable may be pinched, which can cause the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warning light not to illuminate as intended, the notice published on Aug. 14 states. These vehicles are not compliant with certain requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, according to the recall. TPMS that is unable to warn a driver of tire pressures outside of recommended limits can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning, the recall notice says. Here is what you need to know. How many Jeep Wranglers were recalled? Stellantis, which is also the parent company of Chrysler, recalled 78,989 vehicles. The recall number is 56C. Check car recalls: Range Rover, Ford, Nissan among over 300,000 vehicles recalled What to do if your car has been recalled Dealers will inspect and replace the remote start antenna cable as necessary, free of charge, the NHTSA said. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on Sept. 2, 2025. Owners may contact customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Car owners who want to see whether their vehicle was recalled can check USA TODAY's automotive recall database or search the NHTSA's database for new recalls. The NHTSA website allows you to search for recalls using your vehicle identification number, or VIN.

The Best-Selling SUVs of 2025 So Far
SUVs continue to lead the charge in 2025, and some models are pulling far ahead of the competition. These top-selling SUVs are winning over buyers with the right mix of features, value, and versatility. Whether it's family-friendly practicality, fuel efficiency, or rugged all-terrain performance, today's best-sellers reflect what shoppers care about most. Automakers that nail the formula are being rewarded with strong numbers early in the year. From budget-friendly compacts to high-tech three-row models, these SUVs are setting the pace in one of the most competitive segments in the market. Here's a look at which ones are dominating the charts in 2025 so far. In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from various manufacturer websites and other authoritative sources, including the EPA. Models are ranked based on units sold so far in 2025, from least to most. 2025 Subaru Crosstrek Units Sold This Year: 90,334 Subaru's subcompact crossover, the Crosstrek, is their second best-selling model so far for 2025, a position is continues to hold on to. If you're looking for an affordable adventure vehicle that offers some genuine off-road chops, this is it. Compared to sales in 2024, the 2025 Crosstrek is up 14 percent. Trims and Pricing The Crosstrek's starting price is about average for the segment, but it offers you quite a lot for your money. Of the trims on offer, we think that the Premium and the Wilderness offer you the best bang-for-your-buck. The Premium comes with more power and an upgraded infotainment system, while the Wilderness delivers some real out-of-the-box capability. 2025 Subaru Forester Units Sold This Year: 95,972 While it may not look it, the Forester is completely new for the 2025 model year, with updated styling and a more modern interior. This has helped the compact SUV keep its sales up. While the growth in sales took a bit of a hit in the second quarter, the Forester's yearly sales are still up by three percent. Trims and Pricing Once again, starting prices for the Subaru are about average for the segment, hovering around the $30,000 mark. It comes with either a gas-only or hybrid powertrain, with the hybrid being available on every trim besides the Base and Wilderness. We think that the Sport does the best job of balancing price and features. 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee Units Sold This Year: 99,668 The Jeep Grand Cherokee comes in a number of forms in 2025, with the American brand offering a three-row version, the L, and a plug-in hybrid, the 4xe, over the base model. It continues to be Jeep's bestseller, but it has seen a slight slump, with sales dropping seven percent compared to last year. Trims and Pricing The Grand Cherokee starts on the more expensive side of the mid-size segment. This is a result of Jeep attempting to move slightly upmarket. We think this strategy pays off in some models, and while its expensive we think the Limited is actually the best representation of the SUV. 2025 Ford Explorer Units Sold This Year: 104,929 While it might not be the flashiest option out there, the Ford Explorer continues to deliver rugged good looks and the option of some brawny powertrains. This three-row midsize SUV remains a favorite among buyers. Sales soared in the second quarter of this year, with a 24 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Trims and Pricing Compared to some other midsize three-row SUVs, the Ford Explorer has a slightly higher starting price. Ford has trimmed the lineup for the 2025 model, getting rid of the mid-level Limited. In its place, we think that the sporty-looking ST-Line offers exceptional value. We wouldn't blame you for upgrading to the turbocharged V-6 in the fully-blown ST though. 2025 Nissan Rogue Units Sold This Year: 109,563 Nissan updated the Rogue for the 2024 model year, and the changes to its styling and interior features seem to have boosted the compact SUV's popularity. The main change for this year was the addition of an off-roading Rock Creek model. Its sales spike looks like it's starting to teeter off, with the Rogue moving from the tenth best-selling vehicle in Q1 to 15th in Q2. Trims and Pricing The Rogue is one of the more affordable options in the compact SUV segment, though the margin is fairly small. While there is defintiely a case to be made for the Rock Creek trim if you're the adventurous type, we think that the average buyer will find the best value in the SV model, which offers a stack of desirable features for a small jump in price. 2025 Hyundai Tucson Units Sold This Year: 113,310 The Tucson may not be the most exciting crossover to drive, but it delivers sharp contemporary styling, a spacious interior, and a plethora of standard features, all at a price that is really hard to argue with. This is why the Tucson is Hyundai's best-seller, and why sales continue to grow, with Q2 figures that are 25 percent higher than last year. Trims and Pricing The Tucson comes with either a gas-only, hybrid, or plug-in hybrid powertrain. All three models are pretty competitively priced for the segment that they compete in. If you're looking for a gas-only model, we'd suggest the SEL, while we think that the N-Line is the best value hybrid model. 2025 Chevrolet Trax Units Sold This Year: 119,593 Chevrolet has really proven that a good small, affordable crossover can sell better than its larger rivals. The Trax continues and upwards trend of popularity thanks to its phenomenal starting price and impressive list of standard features. Its sales in the first half of 2025 are 32 percent better than last year. Trims and Pricing If you're looking for an affordable crossover, the Trax is among the cheapest options in 2025. It undercuts all of its core rivals in the subcompact SUV segment. While every model offers pretty impressive value for money, the LT strikes the sweet spot. It comes with a bunch of features, including a larger touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. 2026 Chevrolet Equinox Units Sold This Year: 129,889 Chevrolet makes the list a second time with the compact Equinox. The Equinox entered a new generation for the 2025 model year and sees yearly sales that are 22 percent better than last year. This number doesn't include sales of the Equinox EV, which is fair as it is wildly different to the gas-powered model. Trims and Pricing The Equinox starts at a price similar to its rivals in the compact SUV segment. We'd skip the base LT and upgrade to either the ACTIV or the RS. Both come with similar equipment and an identical price tag, it just comes down to whether you prefer the outdoorsy look of the ACTIV or the sporty look of the RS. 2026 Honda CR-V Units Sold This Year: 212,561 Selling over 80,000 more units than the Equinox, the Honda CR-V stands proud as the fourth best-selling vehicle in the U.S. and the second best-selling SUV. While not particularly exciting, those looking for comfortable and affordable transport will find that the CR-V is easily one of the best-value options on the market. Popularity only continues to grow, with sales in H1 up eight percent from last year. Trims and Pricing If you're looking to avoid the hybrid model, then the EX-L represents the best version of the CR-V. However, we definitely recommend stepping up, as the hybrid model comes with the best features. The Sport-L offers some excellent value, balancing price and features. We appreciate the addition of an adventurous Trailsport model for 2026 as well, though. 2025 Toyota RAV4 Units Sold This Year: 239,451 Toyota continues to hold the top spot when it comes to SUV sales, despite sales having slipped four percent compared to last year. This is likely due in no small part to the fact that Toyota is ramping things down to prepare for the hybrid-only sixth generation model that will launch later this year. Performance Specifications There are a number of different models to choose from when it comes to the RAV4. There is a gas, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid variant. While the plug-in hybrid model is nice, we'd stick with either the gas or the hybrid in the XLE Premium trim, which comes with plenty of niceties for the price that you pay.
