Protesters waging war on Kenya
Ruto's remarks come amid a wave of violent anti-government protests that have swept across Kenya in recent weeks, with human rights groups reporting over 30 deaths and damage to property.
'Such criminal acts are a declaration of war,' the president said on Wednesday, instructing police not to kill 'anyone caught burning another person's business or property,' but instead that they 'should be shot in the leg, hospitalized, and later taken to court.'
'This country will not be destroyed by a few people who are impatient and who want to have a change of government using unconstitutional means. We're going to use whatever means that is available to make sure that we stabilize the country,' he said.
At least 31 people were killed during Monday's protests alone, according to the latest figures released by the state-run Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR). The demonstrations marked the 35th anniversary of Saba Saba – Swahili for 'Seven Seven' – a historic July 7, 1990 uprising against single-party rule, now commemorated annually as a symbol of resistance to repression and economic injustice.
In a statement on Tuesday, the KNCHR said 107 people were wounded, 532 arrested, and two others reported missing. The agency 'strongly' condemned all human rights violations and urged 'accountability from all responsible parties, including police, civilians, and all other stakeholders.'
The Kenyan National Police Service (NPS) said on Monday that 63 people – 52 police officers and 11 civilians – were injured during the demonstrations, which it claimed were infiltrated by 'criminals.' At least 19 vehicles – 12 belonging to the police, three to government agencies, and four to civilians – were damaged, according to the NPS.
The UN rights office has called for independent investigations into the 'use of force' by Kenyan police against anti-government protesters.
Late last month, 19 people were killed nationwide during demonstrations marking the first anniversary of last year's youth-led protests against a controversial finance bill – later withdrawn by the government – and the custodial death of Albert Ojwang, a blogger and teacher, according to the KNCHR. Six people, including three policemen, were charged with murder in connection to Ojwang's death, although they all pleaded not guilty.
In response to Ruto's crackdown order, Kenya's former vice president, Rigathi Gachagua, told him to 'relax,' as no one wants to remove the 'government unconstitutionally.'
'We want to face you on the ballot in August 2027, so just relax,' Gachagua said, and threatened to take Ruto to the International Criminal Court.
Gachagua was elected alongside Ruto in 2022 but was impeached last year on charges of corruption, inciting ethnic divisions, and fueling anti-government unrest.

US President Donald Trump has reversed the Obama-era attempts at normalizing relations and earlier this year reinstated Cuba to the list of state sponsors of terrorism. The Cuban Foreign Ministry has vowed to resist the US 'imperialist and interventionist' policies. 'We are free, sovereign and independent, and we are going to continue building our revolution, despite the tightening of the blockade,' Diaz-Canel said last year. Russia and China have repeatedly condemned US sanctions against Havana. In an op-ed published in Cuba's state-run newspaper Granma in May, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called for the lifting of the 'illegal' economic blockade.

US State Department to begin mass layoffs within days
The US State Department will start mass layoffs in the coming days, as the administration of President Donald Trump aims to slash the size of government, multiple media outlets have reported. Trump kicked off the waste-cutting effort a month after taking office, with the initiative being led by the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Until last month, the department was led by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who stepped down following public backlash against DOGE policies and growing disagreements with the president. Prior to his resignation, Musk had reportedly clashed with several members of the administration, including Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Relations between Musk and Trump soured last month when Musk opposed the president's Big Beautiful Bill, calling it a 'disgusting abomination' and accusing it of worsening the budget deficit. The bill, which was approved by Congress last week, raises the unprecedented $36.1 trillion US debt ceiling by an additional $5 trillion. A tense power struggle between Musk and Trump loyalists is reportedly underway in DOGE. ‘Bombmakers' for Ukraine busted in Russia – FSB (VIDEO)
Two Russian residents have been arrested for allegedly conducting covert missions on behalf of Ukraine's intelligence services, including assembling improvised explosive devices from components delivered by drone, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Friday. Kiev is reportedly operating a clandestine network to smuggle contraband into Russian territory in support of sabotage acts and targeted killings. The operational structure is understood to be compartmentalized, with individuals often unaware of one another's roles, and equipment passed through hidden caches. Russian authorities said they identified two operatives affiliated with what they termed a 'Ukrainian terrorist organization,' both residing in the western Bryansk Region near the Ukrainian border. The suspects were allegedly tasked with recovering drone-delivered equipment, constructing explosive devices, and inspecting recovered firearms for operational readiness. The FSB did not name the suspects, but said one is in his late 20s and the other approximately 30 years old. According to the agency, the individuals began cooperating with Ukrainian authorities in April 2024 and now face charges of treason. Video footage released by the FSB showed evidence allegedly seized during the operation, including several unassembled short-range drones, what appeared to be packaged C4 explosives, a pistol, and a firearm, described by one suspect as a 'suppressed Makarov,' may in fact be a PB pistol – a Soviet-designed silenced handgun from the 1960s. Though based heavily on the Makarov PM, the PB was developed by gunsmith Aleksey Deryagin, not Nikolay Makarov. The FSB further accused the suspects of conducting reconnaissance on sensitive facilities on behalf of Kiev. The agency said a radio scanner was found in their possession, allegedly used to detect electronic jamming signals and to calibrate drone systems to avoid interference. Russian officials have accused Ukraine of organizing numerous sabotage and assassination attempts in recent years. In one such incident in late May, an alleged explosive attack beneath railway tracks derailed a passenger train in Bryansk Region, killing seven civilians and injuring more than 100 others.
